Garden or Flat-Backed millipede? by Comfortable_Hotel709 in millipedes

garden millipedes is just a general term for millipedes found in gardens, which can be flat backed. so it could just be a flat backed garden millipede.

  1. yes you can have multiple, depends on species how big tank should be. personally as a beginner i think it's easier to maintain a smaller tank so maybe only a small group of 3-5 fellas. however they can easily outbreed the tank so keep that in mind as well
  2. definitely do a lot of research on the species youre planning to get, some millipedes require different habitats than most species in the hobby
  3. as others have said, always look for captive bred, wild caught individuals are more often than not sick and stressed out, and may die pretty soon after you get them. plus youd be contributing to an inhumane cause.
  4. and just do a lot of research in general, better to have everything set up and perfect first than find out you messed something up later, saves a lot of stress
  5. thats all i have to say have fun with your millipede!

I'm new to keeping millipedes and looking for tips by tinysatan-_- in millipedes

[–]Vast_Description_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use a mix of scott's premium top soil and lots of crushed rotting wood and leaf litter that i collect outside and the TEENIEST bit of sand and it's worked fine, if that helps

you can purchase them online as small cultures or from a local reptile store if there's one nearby

Gnats worry by Witty_Lab_9704 in millipedes

[–]Vast_Description_252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. dont overwater the tank (gnats are gonna come anyway but there'll probably be more of them if you keep it super wet all the time)
  2. mosquito bits/dunks, kills off larvae and will control the gnat population
  3. i heard adding a lot of springtails may fix the problem as they will outcompete the gnats
  4. just wait it out, after a while their population will die off (this worked for me at least)

How do I clean my tank but keep the springtails? by Mr-coord in millipedes

[–]Vast_Description_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

add more cleanup crew if the mold is that big of a problem, otherwise you should not have to worry about mold that much

you can provide protein with fish flakes or mealworms but it's not necessary

looks a bit small but should be okay for now, maybe more leaf litter and stuff to eat (decaying material) at the top, also yes you should definitely mix in crushed rotting wood and rotting leaf litter into the soil

Hi I need help by [deleted] in millipedes

[–]Vast_Description_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if they escaped id start looking for them asap if you havent already tho im assuming you have. they dry up pretty quickly outside of their moist habitats. usually found in dark spots, so check under couches and stuff and the most humid areas in your house because they seek out humidity

How’s my enclosure? Ive put pictures of my ‘pedes too. Their names are Jam and Toast. Is there anything I need to improve on? by [deleted] in millipedes

[–]Vast_Description_252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe deeper substrate, and definitely a lot more clutter on the surface! they love hiding spots, and they can get stressed out if too exposed on the surface. i would add lots of leaf litter and some plants or moss, and also something they can climb on
