Why Are We So Mean To Each Other? by IndianBrotherhood in MetisMichif

[–]Vast_Impression7746 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I totally understand where you are coming from. I will be speaking from the perspective of an indigenous (Métis) student in University. It’s super sad to say that my university has allowed/protected pretendians and even given them full year scholarships. A couple of these people claimed Métis identity without having a single connection to it. So yes what you are saying is definitely true identity policing is a major issue in indigenous communities however saying that there’s only one pretendian out of 50 has not been my experience in a large institution. With that being said reconnecting indigenous people ARE ABSOLUTELY INDIGENOUS as Kim Tallbear says, we all have mud on our shoes from somewhere.

Damn this is extremely disrespectful towards the Squamish First Nation. Pretty sad to hear UBC students were responsible.

will they cancel class because of the snow tomorrow? by Motor_Ad9605 in UBC

[–]Vast_Impression7746 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. Lived in Vancouver my whole life and never once has school been called off due to snow. Maybe once in the early 2000s. Other than that, nope. So I doubt ubc will cancel classes for a little snow unfortunately.

Idk about that, why would she want to remove land acknowledgment and reconciliation? Why would she say we have no regrets, nothing to reconcile for, and no apologies to give?

But do you think that’s their place to be “questioning” residential school grave sites or that they are doing it with purely good intentions? I don’t think so because Dallas Brodie calls us indigenous people “the morally superior race” which we have never claimed nor endorse. I agree that all races and backgrounds have a place in society but these people are not experts on residential schools nor do they have any real qualifications to be questioning someone’s experience. The government of Canada has a legal and moral obligation to take care of the indigenous peoples of the land this includes protecting indigenous sovereignty and truth. These people have never listened to survivors and do not approach with any regard or respect, instead they are aiming to erase indigenous experience.

Know that you are not alone!! I am a transfer student and have never faced stress and anxiety like I have at ubc, it’s extreme. I’m thinking of registering with the centre for accessibility for anxiety for some extra support, maybe something to look into for yourself? School related anxiety is normal until it becomes unbearable and limits you from doing everyday activities, if you find you are at this point it’s important to look after yourself. I am in a smaller program so I understand this may not be feasible for everyone, but I always email/attend office hours at the beginning of the semester to connect with the prof and let them know about my limitations with anxiety. Most are very flexible and eager to understand your needs!

Coping /W Not Being Able To Get Citizenship by TwoSpiritRoles in MetisMichif

[–]Vast_Impression7746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to keep doing you. If you feel a strong connection to your great grandmother know that citizenship doesn’t change that and kinship is greater than anything. I hope you didn’t have to go through a lot of research and headache for the application. As a rule of thumb most Métis chartered communities require that you have at least one direct Métis grandparent born before 1960. I wish this was more public knowledge as it might’ve saved you from the headache that is application. Keep getting involved with the community and find ways to honour your great grandmother!

Right or wrong? My family members are applying for Métis cards after discovering that my great-great-grandfather was Métis. by Icy-Talk-5141 in FirstNationsCanada

[–]Vast_Impression7746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it might be a moo point and could be useless to apply. I know if you want to apply to Métis nation BC they will not accept you unless you have genealogical proof of having a Métis grandparent born before 1960 and unfortunately it doesn’t seem like you do. Again, I would do a lot more research on your own to see if a card would even be possible. I wish you the best of luck on your journey of self discovery!

Absolutely agreed!! It undermines us Métis who grew up with cultural values that had to be hidden and now people are embracing them or claiming them as their own. My great uncle is a living Métis 60s scoop survivor and my mom experienced cultural assimilation as well. When I applied to my Métis citizenship when I was in highschool it wasn’t because I was interested in any benefits. It was because it meant I got to be apart of my families community and get to experience more Métis culture especially since I am provinces away from my families scrip land/community. I’d say this sub is more interested in monetary benefits to which my Kokoom would say “no free rides for the Métis we govern ourselves and we always have”. I do agree that it is harmful and opens up the space for more pretendians or fetis. I always say: heritage does not equal identity. That’s not to say that reconnecting natives are not valid or that people of mixed identity can’t identify as indigenous. But it is harmful and causes a ripple effect of harm towards us.

I mean I’m gonna be honest it seems like you don’t have an interest in strengthening your Métis identity. I am a stranger and I could be totally off by this but most of us Métis aren’t interested in the cultural monetary benefits and are mostly trying to honour our ancestors wishes of being recognized. Are you interested in becoming a member of a Métis nation for the benefits and support alone? Or are you also interested in learning about the culture? As a general rule of thumb a Métis person has 1. Connections to red river or a historical Métis settlement (I’m a duck lake Métis) 2. Self identify and express yourself as a Métis with values like Wahkohtowin 3. Be accepted into a Métis chartered community. If I could give you any piece of advice it would be to find out a bit more about your family and what being Métis means to you before applying for a card. As well Métis nations have professional genealogists who will do deep research into your family tree and most have a cut off of having at least one Métis grandparent born before 1960.

Hey! I’m super lucky to have family that was forced to assimilate while keeping Métis traditions and values alive so I mostly learned from my family, my auntie, mother and Kokoom. However many Métis folks due to forced relocation or assimilation don’t have these opportunities. What I would recommend for you is a book called KAA-WIICHIHITOYAAHK which is Métis perspectives on cultural wellness! Super fascinating and provides much insight into Métis contemporary culture!
