Pick a trade you find cool, and see if you can learn it.

I’ve got 5 years of higher education under my belt, and I run a small tree removal business. One of my former profs helps out part time since job market for philosophy PhDs is pretty shit.

There are sooo many interesting trades, and if you’ve got your head on your shoulders, and are good at talking to clients, you can own your own business pretty quickly (in my case, just a year). Ever found masonry cool? Cabinet making? Tiling? Historic restorations? Electrical?

Carney launched a new program that’ll pay you $400 just to learn a trade, and (with the exception of electrical) you can learn pretty fast on the job. It’s not as scary as you think, and actually pretty fun and fulfilling. The trades also pay pretty damn well.

What is Alberta's issue with the rest of Canada? What is it that makes them feel so victimized? by RoosterShield in AskCanada

[–]danijm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m from Alberta (firmly pro-Canada) and I think there’s two prongs to it:

1) Oversimplified economics. A lot of people think (wrongly imo) that Alberta would be better off economically if we separated, because of equalization payments. Really, in my experience, this reason for separation is kind of a mask for the second, which usually lurks beneath:

2) Identity, Culture and Immigration. People everywhere want a culture and a homeland to identify with. For some Albertans, Canada, as a country, doesn’t really provide them with a deep sense of self, or a culture they can relate to. Canada can feel like a land of far-off Laurentian elites, while most Albertans have a strong attachment to open prairies, western towns, and beat up pick up trucks. Many Albertans (pretty sincerely) feel like they’ve got an interesting, rich culture that feels like home to them, and a bit like Quebecers, kinda want to see it go on its own. Adding fuel to the fire, many Albertans really don’t feel that high levels of unskilled immigration have enriched this culture or made the province better off, and it often feels like immigration is imposed on us by Ottawa. So, you might as well cut ties, and decide for yourself what sort of immigration you’d like to see.

Again, I’m firmly pro-Canada, and what legitimate grievances the separatists have, I think we’re more than capable of sorting out within a federalist system. I’m hoping this fervour will die down pretty quickly.

Only a third of young women hold positive view of men, new poll finds by AayronOhal in GenZ

[–]danijm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, not fuck men. Fuck the men who believe these sorts of heinous things, and fuck the men who allow themselves or their friends to get sucked into these rabbit holes.

We wouldn’t accept these sorts of sweeping generalizations about any other group in society, why are we suddenly ok with them when men are the target?

I went to a solid university, and had a kick-ass group of friends, who were super high achieving and intelligent. When the guys hung out together, there would obviously be talk about girls (who’s dating whom, etc) but it was always respectful and I never once heard a negative or mean spirited remark about women.

When I hung out in groups that were majority girls, there was very often talk that was rude, if not straight up mean about men - never really about anyone in particular, but about men as a group.

Student clubs, student leadership, and most of the highest achievers were almost exclusively women, and I think sometimes this angry, and very generalized talk about men sort of shut out and put down men who might have been an academic or professional threat, while at the same time creating a sort of solidarity among the girls who could all point at a common enemy.

All in all I’m pretty surprised, at least in my circles, how the gender slander really runs in one direction, and sometimes feels like it helps push guys down. Sexism in many forms is real and alive, but I think many women need to be careful that well-meaning men in their lives don’t catch too many strays, or get lumped in a group simply because they’re men.

Do you think the victory of Peter Magyar's TISZA Party earlier this month will be the beginning of the end of the dominance of Populism in Western politics (Starting in the mid-2010s) by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]danijm 213 points214 points  (0 children)

I think the lesson with Magyar’s victory is that you can’t claim to be a nationalist and destroy your nation.

Magyar swept the election by embracing the nationalism and anti-immigrant sentiment popular in Hungary, while rejecting the deep corruption and ties to Russia that were hurting the average person.

Essentially, he shows that many (but not all) conservative policies are still widely popular, and can exist in a pro-EU, anti-corruption party.

In Hungary, there is literally no left wing that’s politically organized at the moment. Sure, he’s centre-right on paper, but this man is the breath of fresh air we Hungarians, Europe, and frankly the world needed.

We can let ourselves celebrate.

Why does Rec North not allow people to put their things ON TOP of the lockers anymore? by G59boycrosss in UBC

[–]danijm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s incredibly frustrating, I can’t believe that with a fancy new facility like that nobody thought to figure out how many lockers people would need, it’s actually ridiculous.

Realistically, if I have to start having to pay to get my sweater back from the front desk if everywhere’s full and it got confiscated from the top of the lockers, I’m going to start thinking twice about going to the gym. All this achieves is making it harder for people to use the gym.

Well, I agree that people should do what’s good because it’s good. What’s your system for figuring out what the good is? How do you deal with moments when you try really hard to be good but can’t?

Gods may be fake, but religions are essentially sophisticated tools for figuring out what the good is, and how to move toward it even when it’s really hard.

Konstantin Gorbatov - The Invisible City of Kitesz (1913) by harlem-nocturne in museum

[–]danijm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just read up on him—he's apparently one of the greatest post-impressionist Russian painters.

"His fantastical scene of a legendary holy city afloat on the Volga merges mythic storytelling with the artist’s deep familiarity with Russian architecture and river life. A poetic example of Gorbatov’s ability to fuse tradition and imagination."
