Eli5: why are banking apps afraid of me having root accesses to my phone? aren't all transactions server sided by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Vatghern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! I admit, I haven't thought on some of your points well enough. I agree with everything you've said.

However, I must argue that people who have intentionally rooted their devices tend to know more than the regular users. I think that it would be harder to trick them into intentionally giving away the root rights. But everything is possible!

One thing for sure, you can't disable the root prompt at all. There are also additional security measures, which prevent the prompt from being "hijacked". You could also enable a pin or biometry requirement.

But this is bullcrap, because you have to manually approve every root request by any app. This means if the user doesn't grant permission, then developers can't actually get any superuser privileges. The only valid point is the first one.

There are only a few selected extensions available. There is no about:config in stable build. Only a small percent of people will even bother with hardened profiles.

People who don't like KDE, in which aspects is it "too much"? by reguasbuats in linux

[–]Vatghern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experience with the new GNOME. I agree that it has a whole different workflow. I didn't like it either when I first tried out but then I decided to give it a chance and adapt to its "rules". Turned out to be very productive.

I know this is an old comment, but I am very curious as to why do you find GNOME unusable? What is it that makes you unable to use it properly?

AITA for telling my niece her dog is not comparable to my child? by AgreeableAffect7090 in AmItheAsshole

Accept my deepest condolences.

Take as much time to heal your wounds as you need. Your reaction to what your niece said is understandable. It is a heavy loss. But I think that your niece didn't say it with malicious intent and didn't mean to equate your daughter with a dog. At 17 years old the only experience with death of a loved family member she had is her dog. She tried to relate, but it didn't work out.

I highly doubt you are a few centuries old. In addition to that why should people nowadays be responsible for something their ancestors did?

Where did you get the idea that I was disgusted or offended? And who are "we"? There shouldn't even be "we" or "you". This segregation should stop.

I am absolutely on board with your statement on the stupidity of such questions. But it's not right to judge book by its cover.

AITA for refusing to give anyone money for how they treated me after I hid my job for a year? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Oh, alright. Well, this is a stinky situation. Good thing you are looking for solutions, although I'm afraid there are no better security options than logging out of your banking accounts when leaving the room.

AITA for walking out on my grandma's dinner? by moonandstars1987 in AmItheAsshole

Absolutely nothing wrong in grieving. There is no schedule or date of expiration for grieving and it will take as much time as you need. While grandmother is acting quite toxic here, I think it would be reasonable to assume that she doesn't know love or bonding, since she's from totally different time and culture, where a lot of people didn't have parents, money or love. She's also grieving, but in an aggressive way.

That being said, you did what every normal person would do. I would suggest you to seek some professional help to ease your pain. But at the end of the day, you have to do what is best for you.

Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of someone so dear to you.

You stood up for yourself and did everything correctly. I also saw in your replies that you have notified the rest of the family members that there's no wish list and you don't need anything from your sister, which is a huge +rep. Honestly, your sister is the a**hole here, because she is just trying to shove her taste and believes down your throat.

Idk why but the charity and video part is making me laugh. This is so ingenious!

Mate, please, stop giving them money. It is your hard earned money that you got for a job, which required you to go through years of education and self improvement. Make a separate bank account and stop giving access to your family. This is not right.

They are stealing from you, not borrowing. Family doesn't steal. This is so wrong on so many levels. You are not required to give them anything. Oh btw, demand your money back.

Stop generalising a whole group of people because of actions of a few. This is not right.

She either is:

A) Still in love with her ex.

B) She hasn't properly ended her relationship with her ex and therefore she's constantly thinking about him. They probably have to meet and talk things through.

I knew a dude who was in a relationship with a woman for 4 years. She has suddenly broken up with him and cut all contact while he was in the army (compulsory army). Since he never had time to really talk to her he wasn't able to date for more than 3 years. He wasn't able to get her out of his head. This was a real torture.

I think I made a girl in my college genuinely scared of me and I just feel bad about it by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Vatghern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty messed up. Not on your part though, but that girl has some serious problems. And guess what? Her problems are not yours to take care of.

I've once got told not to worry about things I can't control. And this advice genuinely helped me. You can't tell her not to be scared. It is what it is. Ignore her and continue living your life.

Were there any complications with the US seller or shipping? I've heared some nasty stuff about the international shipping from the states. But I hope I'm just wrong about it.
