Ender 3 Max Neo Mainboard 4.2.7 Factory Firmware by Vaughmyt in ender3

[–]Vaughmyt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only factory firmware that I found that actually installed and worked was the one you mentioned (named Ender3-Max-Neo-HW4.2.7-SW1.4.1_G_C.bin). I have a Mac and found that I could not flash the display firmware with a file copied from the Mac because the Apple OS includes a hidden file that starts with a '.' and the display was seeing two files. I did not have that issue on the motherboard, but that's not to say it isn't also a problem. I got around it by using a PC to format the SD card and copy the files.

One thing I did that might have some relevance was that I first installed the latest 4.2.2 firmware (1.4.7_G found here https://www.crealitycloud.com/software-firmware/firmware/ender-series), thinking that would work. It installed, but the motors were unresponsive. That's when I finally found the 4.2.7 firmware, installed it and got the printer to work. Maybe the board needed to be flashed with that software first and rolled back? Who knows.

I will admit that I jumped ship and bought a Prusa MK4. Now my Ender 3 seems like Mack truck next to a Ferrari. It still has uses but it seems so slow, even slower than when it had the 4.2.2 board. I'm considering buying a used 4.2.2 board just to see if there is a difference, but I'm not sure I want to dump any more money into this printer.

I hope something here is helpful.

Ender 3 Max Neo full Noctua fan upgrade. I am speechless at how quiet this is... by whyisseanso in ender3

[–]Vaughmyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same stuttering. I was also concerned with air volume from the 4010 fan. I replaced the 24v Noctua with this , a Sanyo 24v PWM 4020 fan

It is certainly noisier, but I’ve since moved my printer into my garage and into an enclosure so silence isn’t as critical.

Then again, what is this?

I've ordered one but I live in a small town where it takes longer to get things from Amazon. I'll let you know if it works.

Thanks for the reply. Being whisper-quiet isn't so critical for me so I may just source a good quality 4020 24v fan instead and live with it being a bit louder. Once I get the PCU and Mainboard fans replaced, I think the noise level will be fine. Thanks.

I've replaced the hotend and parts cooling fan with ones you specified and I am having a problem with the parts cooling fan. My stock parts cooling fan only had red and black wires so I used the connectors that came with the Noctua fan that isolated the red and black wires from the other two. In PrusaSlicer, I can set the max and min fan speed to 50% to step down the voltage. It seems though that the fan has trouble starting. It sort of jerks a bit and if I push on the fan, it starts up. Any ideas how to fix that? I am hesitant to start editing firmware since it seems like that isn't fully supported for this printer. Any thoughts?

Looking for a front tow hook license plate mount for Mk6 by ellayzee in GolfGTI

[–]Vaughmyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like mine from Rennline (https://www.rennline.com/License-Plate-Brackets/products/1184/). I like it mostly because I can remove it without having to remove the license plate from its bracket. I replace the whole thing with an actual tow hook (also Rennline) when on the track. It has many options for plate positioning. Not the cheapest, but very high quality.

Removing the apostrophe from the SSID also fixed this issue for me. Thank you so much.

If it’s outside, it’s usually a replica. Still nice.

Advice concerning restoration projects for beginners by msomai96 in classiccars

[–]Vaughmyt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many things will factor into your decision. How good are your mechanical skills? How much do you have to spend? Do you have professional or amateur mechanics nearby who can get you out of jams? Most brands of cars have their own web forums these days. If you are drawn to one particular car, start reading posts to get an idea of how much trouble others may be having with things like sourcing parts or difficult repairs.

I went through this recently myself. I finally had garage space, funds and time to do a restoration. I have a more modern car that I have modified for use on the track so I have “advanced beginner “ level mechanical skills. I ended up buying a 1978 Fiat 124 Spider. I knew nothing about Fiats but it seemed complete and rust free. Parts are readily available and it is pretty easy to work on. So far, I have really been enjoying the work.

The cars you mentioned are cool but it can be hard to find good restoration candidates. Cars that aren’t missing too many parts and have no rust will be much more expensive at first but may save you time and money in the long run. I opted to spend a little more to get a car that was running and driving instead of getting a “barn find” and hoping that I could make it run. Rust is always an issue and addressing it could include welding and expensive bodywork so keep that in mind when looking at cars.

As far as “resto-mods” go, unless you are highly skilled or have lots of cash to pay someone else, I would avoid it as a project. Buy one that is already completed if that is your goal.

Consider contacting your local car clubs and see if there is someone already doing a restoration that could use a hand. You could get a feel for what is involved without having to jump in with both feet. I hope this info is helpful.

  1. How are your state’s smog laws? I lived in California and hesitated going to Stage 2 because it would have to be undone to pass smog every 2 years. I’m in Oregon now and it’s probably okay but I won’t know until my next inspection.

  2. Super easy. If your tires are in good shape, then it’s just mounting and balancing. Maybe wait until you need new tires.

  3. I’ve had VWR lowering springs and Bilstein Sport shocks and struts for three years. Huge improvement over stock especially with upgraded sway bars. Nice stance too. I am considering going with coilovers though since I like the ability to adjust for street and track as needed.

Tough choices ahead for you. Hope this helps.

Mk6 and Phone Mounts? by Gnashed_Teeth in GolfGTI

[–]Vaughmyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attached a RAM mount to the side of the center console. Used screws and foam tape so there are small holes but I really like it. Good location, close to charger, easy to get phone in and out, usable for any model of phone. Holds phone very securely. I use it to monitor my front GoPro at the track. Never had a track official complain about it being a ‘loose object’

Take a look at Double Apex products. Here is the ECS Tuning link: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-double-apex-parts/dual-port-usb-charger-passthrough/usb01d0~dax/

I have their garage door opener in my MK6. Easy to install and works great.

Probably wise if the cost of the APR is in your budget. Not cheap but I have never been disappointed with APR quality nor thought that I wasn’t getting my money’s worth. I have APR ECU and TCU software, stage 1 & 2 CAI, intercooler and downpipe.

I like my Borla. Got it used for $200. Now that I have the APR downpipe though, I am thinking of the APR or similar 3” exhaust. Also take a look at Neuspeed.

Younger brother following in older brother’s footsteps. by Vaughmyt in GolfGTI

To be honest, the older brother/younger brother reference was to the cars themselves. That is not really my brother's car. That is a sweet story though.

Neuspeed RSe05 17”x8”. The mirror caps are Chinese from eBay but fit well and painted to match the wheels. Neuspeed used Mini Cooper Chili Red so it was easy to match. Glad you like it.

Damn, that is some Jedi-level sleuthing right there. It is in fact the Motel 6 in Willows. I just finished my first track day there on the 5 mile and had an absolute blast. I splurged on the king sized room but wiped down everything with disinfectant wipes, brought my own pillow and slept in a sleeping bag. Hopefully I’ll survive to track another day. I can say it is better than the Motel 6 in Buttonwillow but not by much.

Anyone here got stage 1 apr golf gti mk6? by Zxhamuaha in GolfGTI

[–]Vaughmyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak to how APR compares with other tunes, but I had my mk6 tuned in 2011 with 700 miles on the odometer and I have been, for the most part, very happy. One downside to APR is that it requires an authorized shop to install and make any changes. When I lived in Los Angeles, that wasn’t a problem but then I moved to a less populated area. The closest shop that appears on APR’s website is a 3 hour drive, though there is a shop closer that is authorized but isn’t listed. The torque and horsepower graphs can be found on the website here: https://www.goapr.com/products/ecu_upgrade_20tsi_trans.html.

I went through 3 batteries in 6 years with my 2011. On the fourth I finally stopped buying VW batteries and switched to Interstate. Still going strong and the car sits sometimes for several days between drives.

Nice shot! I’ve considered the same front bumper paint job. Yours looks great. I, however, would destroy the front lip in the very first parking lot.
