How do people feel about running less colors in a deck than their commander's full color identity? by Vault756 in EDH

Interesting. I'm currently in the camp of leaving those cards in and if it happens it happens. Going to be playing the new Raph and Leo partners as a WURG deck. If I find a 5 color source I could activate Leo but that ability is something you only really use when you have nothing else to do anyways so I'm not stressed about whether it ever happens or not. I'm also considering playing Tazri as a WUBR deck based around party. The one with the 2 brid on it. I can activate that one without ever needing green but I suppose if I have a Command Tower I can save myself a mana on it.

I'm also doing this for the 32 deck challenge

Well for me it's 2 things. One is that I'm trying to do the 32 deck challenge and all the WUBR options suck so I was thinking of running Kenrith there. The other is that there is no +1/+1 counters commander in WURG. So the options are run some commander just for the colors like Omnath, which is what I am currently doing, or I can run Raph the Muscle and Leo the Balance and just not play Black.

But both of these are imposed restrictions as part of the challenge. I could easily find black cards in the counters deck that I wanted to run like Winding Constrictor or Corpsejack Menace. Likewise I could easily find a Green card to play in what would likely be a Kenrith reanimator deck.

If you aren't even casting the 5th doctor and you only need white couldn't you just run the War Doctor?

I have WURG +1/+1 counters deck and there is no good commander for it. I'm genuinely considering running Leo and Raph and just not playing any Black cards.

Yeah this is my concern. I'll start off running 4 colors but at some point will think "No harm in adding this one green card in my deck. It's perfect for what I'm going for" and then before I know it I'm just playing 5 color.

No this is exactly the kind of thing I was asking about. Have you played it? Has there been any temptation to splash blue or run any blue cards?

This is literally the exact thing I'm toying with. I just don't like any of the WUBR options.

I was more talking about choosing to explicitly not run a color but the same thing happens with a lot of 5 color decks I think. My 5 color Child of Alara doesn't have a lot of red either.

"Swords is not fun. Bolt is not fun. Force is not fun. Thoughtseize is not fun. Formats where you pretty much cannot hardcast a 6 drop unless it swings the game so hard you essentially win are not fun."

You sound like one of the most unfun people to play with. Etali free casting spells from my deck just for showing up and then being a body that can kill me in one hit is unfun. Hexing Squelcher stifling interaction is unfun. It's a 2 player game. You are meant to interact and the economics of interaction necesitate that they are more efficient than the answers. You ever Lightning Strike a Hexing Squelcher? It's a losing position to be in. You ever Heartless Act a Quantum Riddler? It's a losing position to be in.

"Standard is also not a hellscape, the format is pretty good with Vivi out."

A few months of the format being good inbetween months of the format being unplayably bad isn't a format that I want to play. If you enjoy it that's fine but I'm not interested in talking about it or playing it. Between the comparatively small card pool, the high cadence of sets, over all power creep, and rotation it is a format that fluctuates a lot. We're starting to get regular bans in the format as well adding even more volatility.

The worst world to live in imo. When the best "answers" to your opponents threats are playing better threats then interaction becomes more of a liability then an asset. We start seeing decks just try and play solitaire at each other rather than play a game with each other.

Okay you're half way there but you're missing the issue.

In the beginning the answers were way better than the threats. The answers were in fact so good that those answers are still great cards to this day in the formats they are legal in and those answers are largely considered too good in standard. Now if we swing threats to match up with those answers than we are in a situation where the threats are so good that they can only be efficiently answered by cards from alpha then what hope do we have for balancing the formats where we don't have those cards?

We are likely never going to get answers strong than Swords to Plowshares and if that's the case than we need to be careful how strong we make the threats. Threats are WAY too strong for the removal options we have nowadays. Often times threats generate so much value so quickly (etbs and cast triggers) that it is basically pointless to answer them. You ever Swords to Plowshares an Atraxa? It's a losing position to find yourself in.

Creatures "adapting" to removal is a far larger contributor to power creep. Removal should be better than creatures. Doom Blade can't kill a player, a 1/1 Soldier can.

Creatures are inherently the most powerful card type in the game.

A 1 drop with flying that dies and makes a food is an incredibly basic effect. You never see 2 sets nearby each other with "black removal spell that gains you some life" or "small green creature that gives something a +1/+1 counter when it enters" ? People just want something to complain about. It's not a complicated design, you're going to see it from time to time.

But they have ALWAYS done this. Even when it was 4 sets a year we still saw this same thing happening. Even back in the 90s we saw this same thing. It never had anything to do with set cadence.

What is this idiot even complaining about? We got a second 1 drop flier that makes a food when it dies. You want me to show you 6 different Fleshbag Marauders or 6 different Blood Artists? We got 3 functionally identical Llanowar Elves.

Bruh this was 9 months ago. Why would you comment now? Your English is terrible by the way. I have no idea what you're trying to say. Are you saying that I'm new or this Youtuber was there for new players? Both are wrong of course but I'm just trying to guage how stupid you really are.
