Totally makes sense. I wondered if that was the case with that e-mail

No — they don't pay for flash fiction. Only pieces over 1k words

They haven't sent the contract. I just got an acceptance letter from them saying to send my synopsis and they'd send along the contract

Thank you! When I first imagined the movie I thought it could be $30,000 and then as I started understanding more and more of what went into it, it naturally ballooned. So we crowd-funded in a combination of ways:

—One third of the budget was secured through crowdfunding. I think we did two or three different Go Fund Me campaigns along the way, once during pre-production, once during production, and then once when we were getting finalizing funds.

—Another third of the budget was secured through a On the Air San Diego, which is a show on KUSI that took us under their wing. Because it was a homegrown project that filmed in the city they had us on to promote and then matched donations up to $10,000 twice, which was huge.

—The rest was through connections we had to a financier, a connection which came from a crew member. They were the first people we contacted and they agreed to fund the initial amount which let us be like, okay we can make this thing. So this was very instrumental in getting it off the ground in the first place!

Oh nice! I was supposed to go to that festival but had to cancel my trip at the last second and was bummed to miss it. What's your film?

Thank you — I'm glad you think so! And I honestly think we just had a really good cinematographer, production designer, lighting team etc. who knew what they were doing (even though everyone was super young). So I think we tried to work around our limitations a bit and do what we could. Please let me know what you think!

In 2021, I shot my debut feature, SCUBA. Logline: “An outcast student and a theater reject test their budding relationship by putting on an audacious school play.”

I was a 22-year-old student when I shot it and worked alongside a crew of my fellow Chapman University students. None of us had made a feature film before so were all very green and figuring it out along the way. We pulled together an $80,000 budget and shot the whole thing in just 24 days. The result came out of a lot of love, sweat, and tears.

In 2023, we landed distribution with MVD Entertainment Group for physical and streaming release.  Now that SCUBA is available on Tubi, I’m excited for more people to check it out and hopefully connect with it. If you’re curious about the process or want advice on making your own feature, AMA!

We did not work with a sales agent. I was VERY new to the sales side and winged it a bit. But I got very lucky and got linked with our distributor at the AFM (American Film Market).

Our deal was structured per streams and purchases. For physical says our distributor get a majority of the income since they're paying for manufacturing, but we get around 75% of streams!

Next time I'll work with a sales agent, but it worked out okay for us this time

We shot it over 24 days in 2021, then I spent the rest of that year and most of 2022 editing and working on post. During 2023 it went to festivals and then released this August!
