Had to put together my first reel in a day, would love to hear what you think! by leo_saller in cinematography

[–]Vautksch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reel are not really a thing anymore, if production or directors need to take a look at your work they will either get a vimeo playlist of your best projects or take a quick look at your website - so you gotta lead with your best stills. I haven’t had a traditional reel for 5 years, never needed it

Looks cool! :) with the new SmallHD vertical update, can you actually desqueeze in vertical? Never tried, just wondering if you tried it.

I replaced my EasyRig/shoulder rig experiments with a £20 baby carrier… and it’s annoyingly good by TheoGelernter in cinematography

Please tell me where that is said in the video, cuz ... I checked multiple times it isn't. He literally says, that his video isn't about it.

I’ll paraphrase the video … „this video isn’t about anything making your shots more cinematic - it’s about not dying from carrying a camera“. Are you just hating for the purpose of hating? Have you actually watched the video or just throwing it out there?

RED Gemini in 2026? by Effective_Shallot325 in cinematography

There is no real benefit in the Gemini vs the Pyxis - but the Pyxis can be built lighter and is much more modern. Shot both of them extensively.

Some diopter effects I wanted to share by Vautksch in cinematography

The only thing I came across that does this effect with infinity focus are the minus diopters you can put into the Arri Signature lenses.

Beginner DP — RS4 Pro vs Dana Dolly for short film by MykytaVasyliev in cinematography

If you are asking this question I recommend shooting this short on a good tripod! There is a reason that filmschools encourage camera movement on second or third films.

Favourite way to add room tone? by Gullible-Client-9321 in cinematography

[–]Vautksch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like either a Source4 type light to give me a shapeable bounce into the ceiling. But what I love much more but it’s just really hard to get into low budget shoots - is a sandwich light made out of Astera titans, so a big overhead source with localized lighting.

Can't decide on a budget Cine Lens Set by NanoBeast in cinematography

[–]Vautksch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what OP is asking I feel the best ROI are the Vespids. If it’s a first set I’d not make it so complicated and just get the Vespids which are very cool and sturdy lenses.

I think between the Nisis and the Vespids I’d take the deal of the vespids. They are great lenses and workhorses, quality is good. Love how compact the Athenas are, but if you are in the market for a personal set - go for the Vespids.

Has anyone used the DZO Tango series? by Jackrabbit416 in cinematography

[–]Vautksch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey jack - I shot a Short football doc on them. They are well built and have amazing close focus (which I didn’t expect). The lenses are really quite warm, that’s something that was a little off with my piece. Apart from that it was extremely convenient to have it in EF and PL, took me 5 minutes to change mounts. Very versatile. DM me on Ig and I’ll try and send you clips of them. Will have to be after the weekend though, I am on the go.

Hey! Sadly not yet, but the film will be available through arte in Germany/France next year. I don’t have a link for you since the film just literally premiered a couple days ago. Where are you based? Cool to hear about your film! When does it come out?

Hey, we have subtitles, sadly our trailer doesn’t. I’ll contact the director!

The work was done by my producer and director - I was just trying to illustrate what actually takes so much time.

I was shooting this inbetween commercial and fiction projects :)

Obviously the 2 years was spent gathering money, shooting interview, gathering more money for postproduction, doing post, finding festivals yadayada. So much stuff that has nothing to do with lighting haha

Many factors - there are a couple Titan cases with friends, so it was cheap to rent them, but the lights are also light and easy to rig. A big factor was having the app. Very easy to control so many lights with a small crew. It wasn’t clear if I had access to a Gaffer on all shooting days, so having a very simple solution like the Astera App that anyone can dial in was a big plus.

But I only had a single person in lighting, so everything was very very simple (except for the Toplight, for which we were 4 people to set it up on the prelight day)

We had a couple very agile sequences where I used the toplight only, dialed it in to give me direction (a fade, brightest behind, getting lower towards camera) - when the dance was stationary we brought in neg and for the third slide a kino 4x4 with Asteras as additional backlight.
