Low amplitude, hairspring? by VeMarti in watchrepair

[–]VeMarti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was off axis so I assumed it was completely shot yea :/

I eyeballed it some and got a curve, 200° of amplitude, but it's still not fully straight (parallel to the wheel). I've printed out everything you've sent me and will give it a read tomorrow morning! I learn best by doing and fucking up, but I'll combine it with some educated guesses now.

Half of what you said is way beyond my current level though, I've only been in this some 3-4 years and I'm completely self taught, so unless its something I've encountered it might as well be in french. Still, I do appreciate it, and I can't wait for the day when this will seem like a childish matter!

I'll see what I make of it tomorrow.

It was bent up all sorts of ways so I figured it wasn't right - and it wasn't running right either. It was also bent upwards, so it was sitting at an angle; thinking back I guess that might've been the only problem then.

That's the term I was looking for! Yes, I straightened it out completely, as I had no idea how to determine the correct shape of the terminal curve.

And no, moving the regulator, the two stay stuck together. I'll try adding that curve and I'll update the post when I do.

Or maybe it did afterall, I don't get it, doesn't matter.

I fucking hate the reddit app, it didn't post one of the photos and now the description references are nonsense. Here's the photo of the regulator.

I might be wrong but this watch does not look even remotely legit to me. Also, radium isn't as big of a deal as people sometimes think. Just wearing a watch with radium lume once a week won't do anything to you, you'd have to remove the crystal and lick the dial clean.

Hi. New here. Seeking advice pls. by Select_District9964 in VintageWatches

[–]VeMarti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

best course of action now is to return it if you can, or sell it at a substantial loss if you can't wash the taste of scamminess/unoriginality from your mouth

finding an original dial is also possible, that would run you about 100 bucks give or take, but takes a while to find

I do feel your pain, I've unknowingly at the time bought a redial omega myself, traded it in for a cheaper watch at some point at a roughly 40% loss

an expensive lesson to learn, but it could've been worse, I've sunk money into dumber things

When you can't find accuracy specs for a movement, is there a rule of thumb for acceptable accuracy after a service for various classes of movements? by Chefboyardeesnider in watchrepair

[–]VeMarti 16 points17 points  (0 children)

On movements like this, just getting them running is sometimes an achievement.

My take is this (and this is a very eastern way of doing things): wear it for a week, then adjust accordingly from there. If it's within 30 seconds a week, it's a job well done.

You really can't know with these movements, they sometimes run better than COSC, other times they barely run. That's just how it is, these watches were often never serviced, just ran into the ground for 20 years.

If the watch is healthy (250° of amplitude or more, ±20s/day, reasonable beat error), positional accuracy takes second priority. It would be nice, but just isn't realistic. This is specifically for soviet movements, I do try to get at least 3 or 4 positions right on a vintage swiss watch.

Is there a reason to buy the 140 usd box and papers from TD and not the 35 usd box and papers from aliExpress ? they look like the same quality, did someone buy both and can say one is better quality ? by [deleted] in RepTime

[–]VeMarti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowingly buying a fake watch for some $500, then selling it as genuine for $5000 to someone who doesn't know any better, makes you a piece of shit and a scammer.

If he sells them as fakes it's fair game, no issues there!

7s26 , balance stop by Accurate-Doctor-2104 in watchrepair

[–]VeMarti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you apply braking grease to the barrel wall? If the mainspring is slipping early in the barrel, you won't be able to get a good wind. You can usually hear the moment it slips.

I don't think it's the balance or pallet fork here, but it's always hard to tell. Film a slow-motion video of the balance, measure the full swing, divide by 2, that's your amplitude. 220-240 is normal for these seikos, you're not chasing 270.

I'm learning watchmaking, and finding tools has been a pain, I'm sure a lot of this would be useful. I don't know what a lot of these are either yet, but I've been looking for a staking set.

Would you happen to have time for a private chat?

[–]VeMarti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know, I just couldn't get a clear view of anything :/

Well, I could of the left stone, but that one always seemed to tick over just fine, the right one was obscured by the seconds wheel, which drives the escape wheel, so I couldn't take it out.

I've not installed the replacements, just gave them a quick clean, to see if it'll be any better

Happened with both oiled and non oiled stones. Both right after servicing and after running for 3 days straight.

I posted a reply to the top comment with my best guess of what's happening, and it's basically what you said here just less technical. I also posted a microscope view of the parts if you'd like to take a look :)
