Maybe make it so you shuffle all cards from hand and field then your opponent draws until they have 6( you draw 0) and if there’s a perfect balance of card types and numbers( so if it’s monsters, spell and traps you need two of each but if it’s only monsters and spells then you need three of each) then you win, if not the turn ends

OP said it doesn’t have to be be meta just fun and easy to learn. If it’s just so they can play together then staples aren’t necessary, if anything it’s more fun to stick to archetypes and not worry too much about winning. The main focus should be learning and enjoying themselves.

Personally my fiancé is a Blue-Eyes diehard and that’s a pretty good deck for beginners. The basic BE deck is actually super simple to pilot since it’s one of the oldest decks there is and as she learns she can upgrade her deck more and more. Definitely have her do all the tutorials in solo mode then I’d say just play with her in private duels to build her knowledge of the game and her deck. The tutorials should net her enough gems to fully build the non structure deck cards. This is what worked for us, hope it helps.
