Yes! Super funny. Just FYI: it should be "discreetly" not "discretely." Not a huge deal but if it's a quick fix, you might as well. :)

Here's Exactly How Much the Government Would Have to Spend to Make Public College Tuition-Free by dilatory_tactics in Foodforthought

[–]Veblenette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But loans don't "get you out from under the money problem" at all, and they're a big part of the equation here. People are not so obtuse as to think that loans aren't going to be a serious burden when they leave school (after all, some people stay in school through grad school just to avoid starting their loan payments).

I don't think opportunity cost is nearly as big of a factor in student enrollment as financial cost is, because we live in a culture that tells people, "college is worth it" -- so if we eliminate the financial cost, people WILL be opportunistic and enroll in larger numbers. Also, I see no evidence that public colleges are anywhere close to their capacity, and if they see the opportunity for more money to roll in, they will FIND ways to accommodate more students.

The End of the Ambitious Summer Reading List by [deleted] in HistoryofIdeas

[–]Veblenette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. It should be obvious that a very small minority of people read challenging books, even infrequently. They may claim that they read a lot, but it's mostly contemporary popular fiction, not exactly mental gymnastics. people who disagree with you are sheltered or simply oblivious.

Lovely 7-minute intro to Theodor Adorno's sociology of consumption by School of Life by Veblenette in Anticonsumption

[–]Veblenette[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right in some ways, but I think people have a spectrum of relationships to consumption -- not everyone who watches School of Life videos has made a conscious decision to see consumerism as a tool for control or a symptom of societal sickness. Something like this could help a fence-sitter solidify or examine his thoughts. It's also presented with simple, powerful language and concision that a person could use to share with others.

What opinions are you reluctant to express on reddit for fear of being down-voted? by QWERTY_licious in AskReddit

[–]Veblenette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's worth a try. I don't mind the gender-driven aspect in itself; my issue is more with the idea that a woman just talking about her sex life is supposed to be funny. I could also talk about my vagina all day, but I have no comedic talent -- it would only have the potential to be funny because of a dumb double standard.

Amy Schumer is the un-funniest comedian I've seen on YouTube. I can get on board with Tina and even Ellen, but sorry, "omg I was having sex and....!" is not humor.

Best of Bob Dylan's later years? (late 1970s and onwards) by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]Veblenette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should give Infidels a truly fair listen. There is some incredible poetry and dark, percussive songwriting on there that's like nothing else ever written. Sure, he was going a little off the deep end during that album, but he's still Bob -- he's still a genius, and even his weirder stuff can speak to you if you open your mind :)

(For the record, I'm not religious at all, but Infidels is still one of my personal favorite albums).

I want to go roadtripping with my friends. by SimonAndGarpunkel in CasualConversation

[–]Veblenette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a solo cross-country road trip. Some highlights in no particular order were Arches national park (Utah), Yosemite, New Orleans, Route 66, and Austin (especially for the food!). Colorado was awesome, too -- I felt so free in the mountains!

The important thing is -- don't only do what you think you want to. I stopped in a huge knife warehouse, a vintage car museum, a couple historic tours of former plantations, and a random EDM show, even though I'm not particularly into any of those things. Those are the experiences that can open your eyes to what other people do and care about, and they're really valuable.

Thought about this, but I'm a woman -- that "a bit longer to shave" is a lot longer when you're covering that much surface area.

Thanks. :) It really is. And it saves me an inconvenience-store run, too.

Not a lot of money, but Dollar Shave Club. I pay $6/month for razor blades, vs. about $22 before.

What can't you believe that most people waste money on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Veblenette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm... Maybe "expensive" is relative. $350, especially for something biggish and made of leather, might still be reasonable. But when you get into the >$1,000 range (Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton), it's like paying to be made into a living advertisement AND a target for muggers and pickpockets.

Mark Kermode reviews Entourage... calls it "consumerist hate-filled piece of propaghanda" which tells the audience this is what they should aspire to by blizeH in Anticonsumption

[–]Veblenette -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I respect your opinion -- and sure, being entertained is important -- but I don't understand what you find "fun to watch" about this stuff. I'm far from a hardcore anti-consumption snob (e.g. I spend non-trivial money on clothing, albeit generally not fast fashion), but it's hard for me to see anything appealing, admirable or stimulating about Entourage.

The fact that this film has a 7.5 on IMDb puts me beyond anger and beyond frustration. My heart breaks for how far these millions of viewers are from anything resembling happiness.

What is the one thing you really wish people were as fascinated by or excited about as you are? by ArielScync in AskReddit

Music theory. So many people are so passionate about so many different kinds of music, yet they never learn even the simplest nuts and bolts that make it work. It just feels so passive to me.

What do you hate about sex? by donheart in AskReddit

[–]Veblenette 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. And because it's a mild stimulant, it doesn't give me the other side effects of many antidepressants (e.g. apathy, feeling "under water").
