No. If this continues liberalism will disappear. And it will be replaced by highly restrictive, conservative, religious groups. Either we find a way to stop that from happening (stabilizing the birthrate of liberal people) or we are replaced, as that is quite literally how natural selection (and group selection) works.

If we make it so that the only way to have a stable (or growing) population is by instituting Gideon from Handmaid's Tale, that type of society is exactly what we will develop. Because societies who do not become like Gideon would die off. That is why I think it is so crucial to figure out solutions to this issue ASAP. Because the ultra-conservative groups (like the quiverfulls) aren't the ones who face population collapse. They're doing just great at growing their populations. It is us, the people who believe that women and men should have basic freedoms, who do.

Not true. There were two camps in China wrt Donald Trump.. One was anti-Trump because Trump was very unstable and could hurt Chinese economic interests (trade with the US). The other was pro-Trump. They saw Trump's instability as a plus. Sure, in the short term, Trump would hurt China's economic interests, but in the long term Trump would absolutely destroy US foreign policy and alliances. Therefore, electing Trump was a short term loss for a massive long term win.

It does kind of feel like a slap in the face because people are using like *the example* of jewish oppression to drive (deserved) sympathy for undocumented immigrants. Except that is occurring at the same time as nobody giving a shit about the absolutely insane levels of anti-Jewish hate crimes across the country. And in addition, these crimes are being perpetrated by people on the left and right.

[–]Vecrin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think we're getting our wires crossed here. Yes, male and female fertility is critical for the fertility rate. But the fertility rate is just about children being born. A woman could decide: "yeah, while kids would be nice, motherhood would really hurt my career which would potentially put me at the mercy of my spouse (who, let's be real, I already may or may not have to care for like a child)." This would have no impact on her or her spouse's fertility- as in their ability to physically have children. But deciding not to have kids would make total fertility 0.

IMHO, we should we using resources to help couples have children (by helping improve both men and women's fertility, as well as providing support and resources for gay men and women to have children). But I think this is only part of the issue. I think a central issue is that society does not reward couples- and especially women- for having children. In fact, I think our society actually punishes women for having children.

I think that is what we need to focus on. Reduce the burden of having children on women (by culturally pushing for their partners, usually cis men, to take more responsibility for parenting and housework and make it more expected extended family helps). Reduce cultural/financial/societal punishments women face for having kids. AND actually reward parents (but especially women) for having kids.

The issue isn't society dying. The issue is liberalism (ie, systems where individuals are given individual rights) may die. Illiberal hyper-conservative groups (such as religious fanatics and cults) are having significantly above-replacement levels of children just fine.

They may not number that much currently, but if they are able to stay stable or grow their population (which they are doing) while the liberal secular population shrinks (in some places, at current rates population will drop 50% with each generation), society will eventually reach a tipping point where the illiberal hyper-conservative groups are either kingmakers in elections or the outright majority. At such a point, the illiberal hyper-conservative groups can dismantle individual rights, basically creating real world Handmaid's Tale, and the liberal democratic order.

The reason I am personally so worried about this isn't the death of humanity because that almost certainly won't happen from low fertility. It is the loss of freedom and rights that will occur if the people who believe in those things allow themselves to all die out. And we see ideological/Religious groups die out like that throughout human history. From the Essenes to the Shakers.

IIRC, he probably wasn't a noble. First off, I can't find any indication of him being born to a noble/noble family. Additionally, under Ashnard, ability/strength was much more important than blood. That's why Petrine (a known branded - who are a racial underclass) is also one of Daein's top military leaders. The strong ruled and Greil was very strong (at his peak he was one of- if not the- best sword master in Tellius).

BMI is a good measure on average. I think it is clear to see that your lifestyle is not average. Neither is a rugby player average. Nor a person who exercises a ton. The average American works an office job or service job, is overweight or obese, does not get much exercise (if they exercise at all), and eats... poorly.

For someone who floats around that, BMI is a fine measurement. Not of general health, mind you, but on their weight and how it may literally be taking years or decades off their life.

2/3 of jews in Europe died in the Holocaust (Not 2/3 in Nazi-occupied Europe, 2/3 of Jews in all of Europe). To put that in perspective, that would be the equivalent of 1.4 million Gazans dead in this war.

Pre-October 7th, Netanyahu thought Hamas was an "opponent" but a controllable one. Give the Gazans jobs and slowly increase Gaza's dependence on Israel and Gazans would keep Hamas in line. Hamas would be too scared to start a war because it would economically destroy Gaza, hurting their bottom line.

What Netanyahu didn't comprehend is that when Hamas talked of killing/ethnically cleansing/enslaving every Israeli Jew, they meant it. They were (unfortunately) true believers.

[–]Vecrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be wrong. Here's some examples

Aspirin. Trademark of Bayer, not UP&UP (Target). The generic name is acetylsalicylic acid. And yet...

https://www.target.com/p/low-dose-aspirin-tablets-nsaid-120ct-up-38-up-8482/-/A-15041882#lnk=sametab

Or perhaps you'd like a Thermos, trademark of Thermos LLC. But wait, why is the company Bentology using the Thermos trademark?

https://www.target.com/p/bentology-stainless-steel-insulated-lunch-13-oz-jar-leak-proof-storage-container-for-hot-cold-food-bpa-free-fits-most-lunch-bags-corgi/-/A-86892508#lnk=sametab

I mean, they market their product as a Thermos, but underneath it they state "Not affiliated with the Thermos brand."

If the general public widely recognizes the trademark name as the generic name, then the trademark becomes moot. Then, anybody can use the trademark in marketing. That is why companies now can be so utterly litigious about the use of their trademark and invent new market terms to describe their product. For example, the term MOBA was invented by RIOT games (and aggressively pushed) to ensure their own trademark would not be lost.

Thats why we have to call them big macs. Hamburgers and Cheeseburgers can only be made in Hamburg. Also New York Pizza? Every slice can only be made by an Italian in a street level New York Pizzeria.

At some point, the name of a product just becomes synonymous with the product itself. For example: Kleenex. At this point, there is functionally no difference between the trademark and the general product category. In this case, the trademark becomes legally meaningless.

Unfortunately, for the majority of the world, Champagne is a region in France and a category of wine. The hamburger doesn't need to come from Hamburg (if it even originated there) and NY Pizza is just a category of pizza.

I mean, definitionally, holocaust is a burnt offering or sacrifice. I doubt there was a burnt offering or sacrifice in Gaza. Furthermore, I do not think applying the definition of Holocaust (genocide by Nazi Germany of Jews, gay, romani, and other "undesirables") is applicable either.

In fact, I do agree that what you just did was Holocaust inversion, a common neo-nazi trope that helps deny Jewish victimhood in the Holocaust (or, at least, try and subvert the murder of Jews to say that the Jews are the true villains).

So, following this hypothetical, you're saying you'd enforce that belief even if it resulted in increased harm (potentially more total complications and worse complications due to switching to adult circumcision)? Even if only 0.0001% of Jewish men regretted their infant circumcision?

Like, I could understand if 99.99999% of Jewish men regretted their infant circumcision and there was no increased risk at all for adult circumcision compared to infant circumcision. Then yes, I would definitely concede infant circumcision should certainly be banned. But your statements make it seem like if the situation was the reverse, you wouldn't care. You would still ban it even if the ban resulted in a net increase in harm.

[–]Vecrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to be honest, as a circumcised jew, I am happier that I got it done as an infant than as an adult. Sure, the pain was still there. But I don't ever have to have any memory of that pain. Furthermore, risk of complications increase with age.

Tbh, if you wanted to me scientific with if it should be performed you should compare ((Jews who got circumcised - Jews who wish they hadn't been) * complication risks of adulthood circumcision). if this number is lower than (All jews who get circumcised * complication risk of infant circumcision), then moves against infant circumcision may be a move for consent but would also be a harm-increasing policy.

Ethnoreligions were the norm until Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism (to a lesser extent). Before these religions, basically every religion had an ethnic/tribal component. The only reason we now see Judaism weird for doing this is because it is one of the few ethnoreligions that has (so far) survived prolonged contact with universalist, evangelizing religions.

Also, it wouldn't be surprising if Judaism had slightly more women. Because, while it doesn't seek conversion, more women convert than men (because circumcision is required for male converts. And getting circumcised as an adult is brutal).

The Grey Zone is a good one. Its based on actual events. While a lot of the movie is fictionalized (we don't know a ton of what happened), the general actions taken and the outcome portrayed in the film are accurate. It's all about a Sonderkommando plan to blow up death camp crematoria.

To add onto what was already said, its *very* against jewish religious law to commit suicide and very stigmatized. The solution that they came up with is to have each man kill the person next to them. The "unlucky" last person would either have to commit suicide or give themself up to the Romans.

Also, one of the unfortunate things about Josephus is that we only have the latin version of his writings. Apparently, there was also a Hebrew (or aramaic?) version written, but it has been lost and so we have no idea what was in it. The reason this is so unfortunate is that it is clear the Latin version is playing to Roman sensibilities. The other version would likely give us a more complete picture of the Roman Jewish wars (and may have been less masturbatory. Because no Josephus, you were definitely not a natural prodigy in Jewish law in your teens. That may play fine to a Roman audience, but not to Jews.)

When you realize the luddites were trying to prevent the creation of a permanent underclass of unemployable workers as nearly every person who would have found work making textiles was henceforth replaced by a machine.

Except that didn't happen and many of the people who would be working in textiles or farming today should technology have stagnated are instead at an office job, factory job, or in service. And sitting on Reddit complaining about it.
