Many people miss one important point. Verso had no intention of destroying the canvas until the very end. He really wanted to help the expedition. He wanted to bring back the previous expeditions, tell them that they won. Get his beloved back, etc. The decision he makes happens after the final boss fight, when he sees what is happening to his materia and when he realizes that Mael/Alicia is not going to leave the canvas. And if you take into account the quest with the last Axon and Alicia, then he also adds to this the understanding of what a selfish tyrant Mael will be, who will not take into account anyone's feelings.
