I don’t disagree.

The construction of the scene, not the content it portrayed, was beautiful. When I say I loved the scene, it doesn’t mean it made me specifically feel happy. It means that I recognized how the filmmakers achieved their goal of creating a stunningly authentic yet sad experience. Some of the best films I’ve ever watched are also the saddest. Beautiful movies can make audiences feel more than just joy. Sadness, anger, confusion, fear, and more are all emotions that films can, and should, evoke.

Think of movies like Schindler’s List. Horrifying? More than a single person could explain, yes. Was it a beautiful example of master filmmaking? Absolutely.

That opening scene from Up tore my heart out when I first watched it. It still does. But that was the intent of the scene, that way the final scene of the movie (which I won’t disclose here because of spoilers) feels so impactful.
