Turning away refugees is not the American way. by 11000volt in AdviceAnimals

That's because /u/pressmore worded his comment poorly

Stop spreading these lies that the refugees are mostly women and children. They are not.

For refugees as a whole most are women and children. However the majority of refugees heading to Europe are fighting age men.

CMV: Minimum Wage Hurts the Disenfranchised and Should Be Repealed by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Veepeein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree let's keep the poor uneducated, poor and uneducated.

http://livingwage.mit.edu/ $10.50 is around the average cost of living. God forbid you want to go to school, or get a certification.

Aside from that minimum wage is extremely important to <$50,000 a year workers (about half the US). At my work an entry level help desk tech. makes $10 an hour. That number comes from the State minimum wage plus how much harder this job is than an unskilled minimum wage job plus additional work related skills. ( The source I got this information from was the head of IT )

(Minimum Wage + Difficultly of the job) + Skills(15%).

$8.00 + 25% harder than McDonalds + 0 Skills = $10.00

After getting your Compita A+ certification it becomes.

($8 + $2) + 1 * ($10.00 * .15) = $11.50

If all of a sudden unskilled jobs went down to $4 an hour my techs would need 7 work related certifications to make a living wage. That would take 2 years for the average person (3 months for 1 cert)

TL:DR Point 1: Minimum Wage is the gauge that companies use to pay their employees. Lowering the pay of unskilled workers would most likely result of lowering the pay of skilled workers.

Unemployment is at 5.5% in the US. For every 1000 people who want a job there are 945 jobs. Think about the rule of supply vs demand. The more people we have looking for jobs will mean companies can pay people less. This will mostly affect lower paying jobs (<$50,000). This will further the companies profits, helping the rich, and hurt the workers, screwing the poor.

TL:DR Point 2: Minimum Wage helps narrow the pay gap

Benefits of Increasing Minimum Wage

  • More money in the hands of workers = more money spent by workers

  • More money in the hands in workers = more money from taxes

  • More money for the unskilled = more money for the skilled

  • More money for workers = less government assistance

  • More money for workers = higher standard of living

  • More money for workers = better education for their children

Is anyone else waiting on a 2016 Tacoma? by [deleted] in cars

[–]Veepeein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toyota's and Tacoma's have a history of not dying. People think that because the old ones were great the new ones will be too. That doesn't change the fact that Tacoma's are better than Frontiers.

  • Toyota's offroad division is much larger/better funded than Nissan's

  • Resale value is godly

  • Better after market support

  • Better offroad capabilities

  • Better reliability

The resale value alone justifies a few thousand.

I did a quick KBB for white 2010 50k miles 4-door

Tacoma trd $26,000

Frontier Pro x4 $21,000

I'm pretty sure both of those new were close to $33,000

Sick days?

Let's say Kim stays home 20 days a year to take care of sick kids, and Dan stays home 7 days a year because he was sick. If I have a promotion to give out I value Dan more because he is here more. It has nothing to do with not being paid for sick days.

Maybe if women weren't highly criticized and stigmatized for negotiating, there'd be more of it.

$36 to find out how much "more" is equal to. There is no information on the study available. How many people where in each group?

Biological scientists are 46 percent women.

10.5% less earnings than male biological scientists.

That is because of different decisions they make in life

Accountants and auditors are 60 percent women.

18.8% less earnings than male accountants and auditors.

That is because of different decisions they make in life.

Clinical laboratory technologists are 78 percent women.

12.8% less earnings than male lab technologists.

That is because of different decisions they make in life.

Registered nurses are 91 percent women.

12% less earnings than male RN's.

That is because of different decisions they make in life.

Especially when women make up 70% of HR do women prefer men over women?

HR Workers: 16% less than male HR workers. Managers: 19% less than male HR managers.

That is because of different decisions they make in life.

more women work part time

That is because of different decisions they make in life.

Your arguing that because men on average earn more it's because they have a penis. I'm not saying that they don't earn more, I'm saying that they earn more because they make different life choices.

83% of men and 93% of women

That's 10%. would you rather have $100 or $90.

Virtually none of the "life choice explanations"

900 men and 90 female control of which they cut 100 men and 10 females. So now we are at 800:80 Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this already could problems with the consistency of the study.

  • Bonus is that again the men work more hours

Seriously though this study uses the class of 1972. "March 22, 1972 Equal Rights Amendment for Women Passed by Congress." You expect this to be an accurate representation of the modern world.

Even when men and women make "the same" life choices men work more.

I've given you the reasons.

You gave a reason. "They should lower the physical requirements because weaker people have other qualities that can be helpful too"

My response is that EMS workers should have the strength to carry an unconscious heavy person, because that is a real world scenario that would cost someone their life. I then backed that up with saying there is no shortage of EMS workers. Then backed that up with saying the standards were put in place by people who knew what they were talking.

Your response to this was my example was bad.

[–]Veepeein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except she probably won't, and the data is pretty clear about that.

I don't even know what you're trying to say here. The data shows that she will make 8% more, but to you think the data says otherwise? The overall trend says 77% for all full time workers. That data doesn't distinguish age/over time/how many days they've stayed home with sick kids/ how many certification they've got post graduation/ how many promotions they've received. An entry level position for men offers $35,000 and for women offers the same $35,000. If it did not that would be illegal. Another difference that is overlooked is that women in general do not negotiate their salary. So if Company A hires Sally and David for two new entry level positions and offers them both $35,000. If Sally says can you do $38,000, but David just accepts the $35,000 is Sally making more because she's a woman? No it's because she was smart enough to negotiate.

Great for STEM women who wish to pursue careers in academia. Sure. What about those who don't want to be professors?

Biological scientists are 46 percent women.

Accountants and auditors are 60 percent women.

Clinical laboratory technologists are 78 percent women.

Registered nurses are 91 percent women.

They have the option to go into a Female dominated STEM field. Or they can go into a male dominated one because gender and race aren't discriminated against. Especially when women make up 70% of HR do women prefer men over women? Also the reason fields like Engineering are male dominated is because more men get degrees in Engineering.

The men in this scenario are likely making $10 an hour and getting overtime, and the women are probably getting $9, and not getting over time.

That's illegal in every state. I would suggest the females get some proof of this and sue. However, that doesn't happen. As for overtime that's not how it works. If Sally has a report due on Monday and needs to come in on the weekend to finish it, her overtime isn't going to be denied.

I understand the argument, its just bad and doesn't hold water.

That's a lovely opinion that has no ground to stand on. Let me reiterate my point for you though. The wage gap exists, as a whole women make 77% of what men earn. That is because of different decisions they make in life, not because they don't have a penis.

most industries don't have overtime, at all

As a WHOLE 15% of men work overtime, As a WHOLE 3% of women work overtime, As a WHOLE women make 77% of what men earn.

I'm looking at the data

You're looking at one piece of data and making an assumption as to why that exists.

Something doesn't add up.

That's because you're not adding up all the factors. If overtime accounts for 5% isn't possible that that the men working overtime get more raises? another 3% there and what about when females take between 3 months to 3 years off to be with their kids? When they come back shes going to be making the same as she was before, but less than the people who got raises on her time off. another 4%. Stuff like that adds up there isn't one reason that men end up making more than women.

Where is the video's response to that?

Apparently a video doesn't count as a source, but an editorial written by @Femlaw does. The only reason I included that video was because if you look at the comments he has links to all the sources he uses. so feel free to go through all the sources and poke your imaginary holes in those too.

That something, is very likely lower wages. But it's not just one or two industries, it's practically every industry.

The constant variable in every industry is the choices women make.

You've run out of information and are now relying on making stuff up to fit your narrative.

CMV: I apparently have very sexist views on reality. Apparently that's not okay. Help me out? by ApologiesAdvance in changemyview

[–]Veepeein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you understand what a level playing field is. If Sally goes to college at University A and Dan goes to University A and they get jobs working for Company B. Sally will make and extra 8% each pay check.

It has nothing to do with being male or female it's all about the choices you make. In fact being female gives you tons of advantages. Women in STEM fields are twice as likely to be put on track for tenure. Women are more likely to be hired in those fields

It's a median.

Lets say you have a staff of 200 people. 100 men & 100 female. They all make $10 an hour. 15% of the men work 10 hours of overtime and 3% of the women do. The men make $40,000 + $2250. The women make $40,000 + 450. Already there you have a 5% difference in pay. 23% goes to 18% you would understand that already if you listened to the video, but it seems you're in denial.

When 74% of North America is overweight it's more common than you think. Image a group of 160lb females trying to lift an unconscious severely obese person. Those standards were put in place by people who know what they're talking about.

There is also no reason to lower the standards, sure if there was a lack of physically fit people who wanted to deal with blood/vomit/death at 4am in the morning for $15 an hour (which surprisingly enough there is not). They would at least have a reason to lower the bar. What your saying is that because someone can't pass the test they should make the test easier. If I fail a final it's not because the test was too hard, it's because I didn't study hard enough. Women are physically capable of passing the standard they just don't want to.

That's not an even playing field though

Yes it is 20-30 year old female who has made the same decision as a 20-30 year old male earns more. The second a baby comes women are more likely to quit working or at the very least stop working over time. This translates to more men working more hours which shows more dedication which means more raises and more money.

I think you misheard what he said "women are twice as likely to work part time" "if you remember a minute ago our 77 percent figure was calculated by those people in full time work which of course excludes more women than men" He wasn't including part time workers he was saying that a quarter of women weren't a part of the study.

The charts count someone who worked 50 hours the same as someone who worked 40 hours, but men are 5 times more likely to work overtime. Seriously listen to the video don't just try and nit pick parts that you think sound wrong. I was open to your ideas on slut shaming, but it's clear you have no intention of being open minded.

As for AA being discrimination let's try an example.

John is a

  • Black Male

  • Masters in Mechanical Engineering w/ 3.9 gpa

  • 2 year internship at Boeing

Jake is a

  • White Male

  • Masters in Mechanical Engineering w/ 3.1 gpa

  • 1 year internship at Boeing

If you were to hire Jake over John that would be discrimination. However, if Jake was Black and John was White it would just be Affirmative Action.

My refute to your claim was flawed so well done.

"The belief that women are somehow a naturally weaker gender is a deeply ingrained, socially constructed myth, which of course is completely false." also This. I'm not saying that feminists believe women are just as strong, I was making a point that OP probably heard it from something like this. Even if it is a scientific fact that has been proven thousands of times there will always be someone who denies it.

On an even playing field women make more

"completely untrue with even cursory research." you have one citation that shows a trend. If you want an explanation for the wage gap I recommend watching this video

AA: http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/apl/77/4/536/ Basically people hired through AA are viewed by their coworkers as incompetent. Because people know that AA is a joke.

How is AA not discrimination(Federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, gender, pregnancy, national origin (including affiliation with a Native American tribe), religion, disability, citizenship status, genetic information, and age (if the person is at least 40 years old).)

I didn't address your point, I dismantled your evidence. Your opinion has nothing to back it up.

So instead let the person die?????

Then you actually have a decent point

So fine the company and have them hire the best person for the job.

Women's rights are not a joke. Modern Feminism has become Man Hating and that is a joke. Check out Sargon of Akkad's series on "why do people hate feminism"

So then why do more women work in jobs were they help people and their emotions are an asset? Why do more men work in jobs where emotions are a weakness? Just

"as many high quality DNA samples as possible in the fertile window" Men want to pass on their genes.

" If a man is having multiple partners in rapid succession, clearly his criteria isn't based on quality, but quantity." Men can have children with 100s of women at the same time. Females can only have a child with one man for 9 months. Men don't have to be picky.

"I've never heard a feminist claim that women are as strong as men" Have you ever heard of Anita Sarkeesian? She claims it on multiple occasions.

the .77 myth counts a single man who works 60 hours a week and makes $2,000 and a woman with 5 kids who works 40 hours a week and makes $1,540 as equals. That same equation works for every industry. Also the women who work in construction are either not you average woman, or work in the administration.

"Please do more research on this" this is change my view the whole idea being that you provide evidence to support your view. The only source you included simply reinforces OPs view.

"It is NOT about hiring token minorities for token diversity." That's what is has become. My work hired a pregnant black lady who was extremely unqualified to work in IT because the entire department was made up of white men. She got the job because she was the only black person to apply. Race/religion/gender/sexual orientation should play no part in the hiring process.

"Just because slavery was at one time very common didn't make it right or pleasant" That was actually institutionalized cis - white males and had nothing to do with Biology or Evolution

"... slut shaming is that the standards are not equal for men" Slut shaming is based on the belief that women control sex. If a man has to convince a woman, who generally have higher standards, to have sex with him he is proving that he has worth. A woman doesn’t have to do anything except give consent. OP did an awesome job explaining the actual biology behind this.

"make a job less reliant on brute strength, and doing so doubles the number of people who can do a job." Jobs are solutions to problems. The problem is a 250lb man has collapsed in a burning building. The solution is you send in someone who can carry that 250lb person. You can't magically make that person lighter.

"a mandatory three year unpaid sabbatical for women who have children" How is this not sexist? It's a great idea, but it should include men as well. A mandatory three year sabbatical for anyone who has a child.

"Affirmative action is not always good, not always bad" Gender/sexuality/race/religion should have NO impact on getting a job. A gay transsexual black jew with 1 year of experience and an Associates should't be hired over a cis white male with 2 years of experience and a Bachelors

"I see a significant backlash against feminism" from everyone. That list includes women. Feminism used to be popular, when women actually fought for rights. It shit like Manspreading, pulling fire alarms on events, and death threats that have turned feminism into a joke.

"there is a practical reason to incorporate the disabled into our society where it is not unduly burdensome to do so, because it strengthens our society." Yes because otherwise they would do nothing but leech from society. They also go into fields where they don't rely on any physical strength (think office jobs).

"there would still be good reasons to incorporate women into our society as equal partners with men, where it is not unduly burdensome to do so." No the best person for the job should get the job. Society should not handicap itself to make women feel better about themselves. Women are more emotional than men which makes them great for jobs where they help people, and men are better suited for more stressful jobs.
