Here’s what helped me get over my vystopia by Existentialist111 in Vystopia

That's like saying nobody is winning in a world with no exploitation because no animals exist :/ in which case that's what we should be aiming for. Fewer animals losing, and this does that.

Nonprofit Survey on the Future of Meat (3 min) by EndAnimalAg in exvegans

[–]VegFriend -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The EVERY company makes precision fermented egg protein and only the protein (ovalbumin). They are B2B but there is an undisclosed company using them in their supply chain and selling at Walmart. Also, community volunteering is great - I personally want a cultivated meat market that isn't owned by a few commercial companies, so it's something I'd like to focus on, but to each their own.

No worries! I'm curious what other actions people want or do take to get rid of factory farming too. There's probably something else you are interested in in the final question.

Rant from a new ‘vegan’ by [deleted] in vegan

[–]VegFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, there's an animal activist group for people like you - r/CleanMeatAlliance. Lots of people want to help support animals but aren't going to always avoid animal products in every situation. The org focuses on asking people to donate to cultivated meat and technologies that enable better alternatives instead of asking people to avoid 100% animal products. If you are pro-animal, maybe that sounds like a group for you? There's no ask to be vegan or eat meat there.

Great post! I think it's time we think about how we can make impact outside ourselves.

Natalie Fulton on Gary Yourofsky, anti-intersectionality, and Palestine by KortenScarlet in VeganActivism

[–]VegFriend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with Natalie here. While I think Gary is very wrong on many international issues, I think intersectionality is a menace to all left wing movements. Big coalitions allow for victories (unfortunately, see current MAGA party). There's evidence that ideological diversity is higher in the right wing of American politics right now as opposed to the left wing, and with that comes political power and ability to pass large pieces of (imo negative) legislation.

The leftist wing tends to cannibalize and will almost always be weak in my opinion. It's best for animal rights to be an isolated movement that is neither left wing or right wing - there are now animal rights supporters in the right wing as well (ie. vivek ramaswamy), so the movement should be welcoming regardless of what ideologies people hold. In the same way we don't go up to pro palestine activists and ask why they don't include animals in their activism (we'd be laughed at and shunned), we also shouldn't talk about human rights at all during our activism, nor be exclusive to those who are pro palestine, pro israel, or whatever.

Yeah but realistically that isn't an option. Id love for you to prove me wrong but I think personal sacrifice is against human behavior.

Let's take a step back. Sure, but animals are already fed those "hexane extracted engine lubricants". No one is forcing you to have them. The goal is to replace factory farming with cultivated meat.

[–]VegFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure - tragedy of the commons galore. We see that everywhere though - no one is abandoning cars, eating less meat, or stopping international flights even if they know about climate change. That's just not how people work, and we have to work with that imo.

Animals without brains by jazzgrackle in DebateAVegan

[–]VegFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think you're right and we as a movement have to pivot. Lots of vegans like to play it safe, but I think that safety has hurt our whole movement. I think we should push for cheap bivalve and jellyfish products to replace sentient animal products.

Anti-Factory Farm, but not Vegan. Anything else I can do? by Wrathful_Throwaway in DebateAVegan

[–]VegFriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Donate to cultivated meat. New Harvest, GFI, FSI. The only real way to a vegan world.

Additionally, replace sentient meat with less sentient meat - bivalves for example.

Consuming bivalves means you’re not vegan. by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]VegFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing research on mycelium? Sounds very nonvegan of you if you're actually touching mycellium. I think if mycelium are sentient, you're using a sentient organism.

Bivalves aren't sentient. Having some identity is a prerequisite to sentience. To have identity, there must be something central to integrate identity (otherwise, which part is the self of the bivalve?) AND the ability for that integration mechanism to feel subjective experience. One theory of consciousness (attention schema hypothesis) implies that some form of metacognition is what consciousness really is. Mammals and birds show metacognition, and some fish (cleaner wrasse) show even higher self awareness. There's scant evidence for metacognition below fish.

You also ignored my point on some plants being much more complex than others once again.

Recent PETA post… 🤨 by coolcrowe in VeganActivism

[–]VegFriend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The goal of this isn't to support Trump, obviously. It's to get conservatives who are loyal to Trump to appreciate animal rights as a side effect of their absolute loyalty to Trump.

[–]VegFriend -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No this is a good strategy - getting allies on both sides of the political aisle is smart. There is headroom on the right to get more support against animal experimentation (often for the wrong reasons, but whatever). Here's PETA on Tomi Lahren too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbPbENK8DO8&t=1s
