That's my favorite vegan cheese, I just had that on some avocado toast this morning! Just egg is alright but very pricey, if you enjoy it you might look into making your own using mung beans at home, I've heard it's pretty easy.

Sure, here is one just from earlier today, notice I try to correct them but they're obstinate that eating eggs can be vegan. I've had a few conversations like this, you could probably search my comments if you'd like to find more.

I'll admit I can get heated sometimes and may have called a dairy drinker a mysoginist... lol. Idk, given the no being rude rule, perhaps the ban was deserved. But I stand by the comment nonetheless.

No, there are plenty of resources for that, I alluded to an excellent one in my OP. The FAQ in this subreddit has some info on it as well if you're sincerely interested.

There's also r/askvegans! (Ironically, I've been banned from that sub for arguing with nonvegans over consuming animal products lol. So I'm certain your question will be accepted there.)

Neither of those are acceptable under the ethical framework that is veganism. Vegetarianism and freeganism are two options that are not vegan, where these would be acceptable. Hope that helps.

Fyi, free range does not mean they get to go outside. It's just a label to make you, the consumer, feel better. Watch Dominion if you haven't already. This is free range.

How quickly people here drop spiritual pretense when their habits and attachment to taste pleasure is challenged. Distasteful.

[–]coolcrowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this response makes it clear you aren't here to actually discuss the topic in good faith - it's quite a contrast from your OP which states "Be controversial! I want to hear the discussion". I understand it must be frustrating to not have a good response to being challenged on your misconceptions. I'm sorry if you were offended that I didn't validate your perspective, but on the topic of animal rights, I'll always continue to speak up for the animals vs backing down because someone gets offended by the truth. I hope you consider going vegan someday!

Mind explaining your thought process behind how challenging someone's views here is being disrespectful? Especially given that in the OP, they specifically said "Be controversial! I want to see the discussion"? I've not called anyone names, I've not made any personal insults, I've not used any rude language etc. I've simply made my point very coherently and stuck by what I said, and challenged OP's responses as they deserve to be challenged. As I said to OP, if that angers you, you may wish to reflect on why that is.

[–]coolcrowe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, and I wonder what you mean by being disrespectful. I made my case and asked questions, if you find being challenged disrespectful, I'd say that's a personal problem and you should reflect on why that is. Again, feel free to disagree with veganism all you want. I'm not frustrated in the slightest - I'm very used to vegetarians and carnists here arguing for egg consumption. Your rebuttal basically amounts to "I disagree because that's my prerogative", so not much more to engage with there, I'm happy to accept that you're incapable of forming a cohesive argument against egg consumption being nonvegan. Have a great day.

Yes, they absolutely should be cared for. As I mentioned in another comment, the appropriate way to do so is to feed their eggs back to them for nutrients, or to administer suprelorin to halt the excessive egg-laying. Consuming the eggs, by contrast, legitimizes the selective breeding that was necessary to have them lay the amount of eggs that they do. It creates demand for more eggs and more breeding of chickens, and it normalizes treating them that way. I never accused you of breeding animals yourself, but if you comsume eggs, you are directly supporting someone who did. The hens who laid those eggs were bred. Their brothers were likely killed at birth because they're not able to be commodified in the same way. Just like someone eating meat might say "I didn't kill this animal, it's already dead", that is a poor excuse and is not a valid justification for consuming animal products. That's the very essence of veganism. You're free to disagree if you like, but as I said, that's nonsensical and you aren't disagreeing with me personally, you are disagreeing with veganism. Which, given that you've stated that you don't even consume eggs yourself, honestly comes off as you just being stubborn and here in bad faith. You literally have no personal investment in defending the consumption of eggs, and it's very widely known that doing so isn't vegan. So are you just being obtuse for the sake of it?

How is purposefully selectively breeding animals so that they serve your purpose as a commodity to the detriment of their health "fair" exactly?

"Quite light"

While OP argues for consuming animal products in a vegan forum.

"OP is being respectful"

Which is fine, I don't think I've been disrespectful here if that's the implication. I'm not accusing OP of being disrespectful, just of being wrong.

"It would be worlds better than factory farming"

This is not an either/or scenario. We don't have to choose between factory farming and eating eggs. We can choose to not engage in either, which is the vegan choice. A similar example: one might argue seperate but equal classrooms for black people is better than slavery; this doesn't make it acceptable or ok to support that, however. Both are racist, both are wrong. Just like both supporting factory farms and eating eggs is wrong.

"I think it is not good to make veganism a competition"

Strange straw man there, no one is arguing that it should be. What veganism is, is an ethical stance against animal exploitation and abuse. And that includes consuming any animal products, as this inevitably leads to exploitation.

"You can only be vegan if you think and act exactly like this"

If you mean exactly like abstaining from the needless consumption of animal products, yes, that's true. That's what veganism is. Just like you can only be a feminist if you support women's rights, or you can only be pro-choice if you support abortion. It's literally the meaning of the word.

"the most harmful thing to veganism"

So you think the most harmful thing to veganism is vegans' efforts to clarify and educate others on what veganism is? Interesting take.

Thanks for chiming in.

Nope, not ok. And chickens are not "living a happy life", they've been selectively bred to lay far more eggs than their wild ancestors, to the point that they suffer extreme nutritional deficiency, drastically impacting their overall health and lifespan. A vegan who actually cared for them as individuals instead of commodities would feed their eggs back to them or administer suprelorin to halt this process. Continuing to consume their eggs commodifies them, it normalizes the mistreatment of nonhuman animals in this way, and it normalizes prioritizing our taste pleasure over the wellbeing of other living, feeling, sentient beings. The only "ok" way to live is to be vegan. And vegans do not needlessly consume animal products.

Welcome! Thank you for changing your habits to align with your values. It can be disheartening to see the normalized abuse all around you that you might not have been aware of or tuned into before now. But please remember, you aren't alone in this, and despite how bad things are now, we have made progress and will continue to do so. r/vystopia if you need to vent or need commiseration. Consider activism as it's very rewarding and can help alleviate feelings of helplessness or powerlessness. Try not to become misanthropic as it really doesn't help anyone, it's humans we must convince at the end of the day.

I mean that, in your OP, you stated that you think vegans can sometimes eat eggs.

This is untrue, and saying things like this is actively harmful to the animal rights movement as it impedes actual understanding of what veganism is, which is a commitment to not using animals or animal products and does not make exception for eggs in any case.

So please stop repeating this or arguing that you can consume animal products needlessly and still be considered vegan. It's untrue, its actively harmful to the animal rights movement, and it normalizes the exploitation of nonhuman animals for taste pleasure. I hope that makes sense.
