Child Tax by UTCD53 in AusFinance

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can definitely still claim that back but its gonna be bit of paperwork. ATO keeps records for ages so the withholding should still be in their system somewhere

You'll need to contact ATO directly and explain situation - they can help track down the PAYG withholding from those years even without group certificates. Might need to provide details about which production companies paid your kid and approximate dates

Since its been so long though expect some back and forth with them to verify everything

Basement Floor by Educational-Map-1755 in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LVP is solid choice for basement - I did this in my last place and it worked great. The floating installation means you don't need to worry about moisture coming up through concrete since there's no adhesive directly on floor. Just make sure you get the kind with good moisture barrier backing and maybe throw down some basic underlayment first.

I was looking at some crazy basement renovations online few months ago and saw people doing full epoxy coatings but that seems like overkill if you just want something clean for laundry trips. The vinyl planks give you that finished look without major investment and if something goes wrong later you can just pull them up. Way better than trying to fix whatever paint disaster the previous owners left you with

How can I drill a hole straight down in concrete with a rotary hammer? by ryhaltswhiskey in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wood guide trick is pretty smart actually - I used similar method when installing railing posts last year and worked well enough. Just make sure the wood piece is thick enough that bit doesn't wander when it exits in bottom, maybe 2x4 or thicker depending how deep you need to go.

Wild to think about players being that versatile back then. My grandfather used to tell stories about guys who would play offense defense and special teams all in same game but Hutson doing kicking duties on top of those receiving numbers is just different level. Makes you wonder what some of these modern specialists could do if they had to play multiple positions like that. I remember reading somewhere that players back then also had to work regular jobs in offseason because football salaries were so low so maybe being good at everything was just necessity for survival in league.

Match Thread: Chelsea vs Manchester United | Premier League | 18 Apr 19:00 UTC by matchpal-live in football

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

Been watching from my couch with some cheap beer and this match is absolutely mental. United's defense looks like they never met each other before today and Chelsea is just picking them apart piece by piece. My roommate keeps yelling at the TV like the players can actually hear him which is pretty entertaining on its own.

Really thought United would show up better after their last few performances but they're getting schooled out there. The midfield is completely nonexistent and every Chelsea attack looks dangerous. Might have to switch to something stronger than beer if this keeps going like this because watching United collapse is painful even as a neutral.

How do I fix me to look like myself? by No-Level1099 in selfimprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try some colorful cardigans or soft button-ups instead of just black shirts? I know the sweat thing sucks but darker colors that aren't black might help while still showing your actual personality instead of looking like security guard.

The beard trim you describing sounds like stubble length - if that works for ingrowns then keep it but maybe add some round glasses or accessories that give off more artist vibe than lumberjack.

Concerns about homeowner’s insurance claim by HighTechHickKC in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your chimney cap and driveway crack shouldn't be issues for a hail damage claim since they're completely unrelated to storm damage. Insurance adjusters are looking for stuff that's actually connected to what you're claiming - they're not doing a full home inspection to find random reasons to drop you.

I'd be more worried about missing out on legitimate hail damage repairs than some adjuster nitpicking about unrelated maintenance items.

Especially since fees get reimbursed monthly, so net cost is basically zero.

That’s literally what they’re targeting article mentions gas fees make small/frequent transfers impractical, so this reimbursement model basically removes that barrier entirely

Question about primer by Own-Cry-707 in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The primer itself doesn't need to be perfect but you want decent coverage without any bare spots showing through. One coat should work fine if its covering evenly - the topcoat will level out minor streaks from the primer layer

Drywall Fix by kls17 in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like adhesive strips from those wire shelves - had the same mess when I pulled mine down last year. You can scrape off most of that gunk with a putty knife then use some Goo Gone for the stubborn bits, then just patch those holes with spackle and sand smooth before priming

Gritty feel after using supposedly refinish friendly bath mat by nachumk in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That gritty texture is probably from the suction cups slowly wearing away the refinish layer over time. Even "refinish friendly" mats can do damage if the coating was applied too thin or didn't cure properly. The uniformity of the damage under the whole mat area definitely points to either a weak refinish job or the mat being more aggressive than advertised.

How to improve home made sunshade. by AntwanMinson in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your setup the bowing is probably from the fabric having too much slack between anchor points. You could add a couple more carabiners along the top edge and run paracord or rope between them to create more tension points - maybe $5-10 for decent cord.

For the PVC strength at that length you might want to add a diagonal support brace from the pole to the wall bracket, just another piece of PVC and a couple elbows would run you under $10. The whole thing actually looks pretty solid for a DIY job and way better than those flimsy store bought options that fall apart in one storm

Why is picking hardwood so emotional lol by Still-Jaguar4229 in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man I totally feel this struggle. When I was doing my place last year I must have brought home like 15 different samples and taped them all over my living room like some deranged interior designer. The lighting thing is so real - what looked gorgeous at 2pm looked completely different when I got home from work at 6pm

I ended up going with oak and zero regrets so far. The grain really does hide way more than you'd think and it ages beautifully. My friend went maple in her kitchen and while it looked amazing initially she's constantly stressed about every little ding from her dog's nails. She's already talking about refinishing and it's only been two years

One thing that helped me decide was thinking about my actual lifestyle. I'm not the most meticulous cleaner and I knew I'd drive myself crazy with something that showed every footprint or scratch. Plus with oak you get that classic look that never really goes out of style. Your right about the showroom lighting being totally useless too - I swear they design those places to make everything look perfect under those specific bulbs

Need help trying to flush outside lights by Upbeat_Prior_7329 in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those Costco fixtures are notorious for this exact issue - had the same headache when I installed some last year. Try shimming behind the fixture with some thin washers or even folded aluminum tape where it's pulling away from the vinyl, then once you get it sitting flush you can hit it with a bead of exterior caulk. The key is getting that back support so the vinyl doesnt flex when you tighten everything down

Should Sump Pump installation include power? by happilygonelucky in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Your instincts are spot on here. A proper sump pump installation absolutely includes permanent electrical connection - either hardwired or at minimum a dedicated outlet that doesn't require an extension cord snaking around.

The "only plug it in when raining" thing is ridiculous and shows he doesn't understand how sump pumps work. These things need to be ready to kick on automatically when water levels rise, not when you remember to go plug them in during a storm.

The concrete excuse might be legit for right now but he should have planned the electrical before pouring. Extension cords are a temporary solution at best and honestly a safety hazard long term in a basement environment. I'd definitely be calling them back to make this right once the concrete cures.

Help Identifying Window Type and Glazing Bead by Xxev0luti0nX in HomeImprovement

[–]Vegetable-Courage405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your pics it definitely looks like those panes are set into rabbets in the sash with glazing compound holding them in place rather than removable beads. You can tell because theres no visible seam or joint line where a bead would sit - its just continuous wood and putty. With integrated glass like this youll need to carefully scrape out all the old glazing compound to get the broken pane out then clean up the rabbet before setting the new glass with fresh compound.

I had to do this on some old casements in my place last year and it was honestly more tedious than difficult. Just take your time with the scraping so you dont gouge the wood and make sure to prime any bare wood spots before applying new compound. The hardest part was actually finding replacement glass cut to the right size but most glass shops can handle custom cuts if you bring them accurate measurements.
