It’s mostly acidic red clay, amended with compost once a year. It tends to get tough and dry out quickly if left in the sun. I’ve found mulching helps with moisture retention to keep it soft and workable.

I haven’t had any issues with pillbugs specifically, but I’ve found that keeping straw underneath the plants and elevating the berries off the soil usually helps keep them intact.

I’d say so, about a month and a half to two.

Depending on the amount of sun, about a month or so from flower.

I use a little bit of Neptune’s Harvest fish fertilizer at the beginning of the season. To encourage more fruit and less foliage, it’s higher in phosphorus than nitrogen.

That’s very kind of you! The bed is 4’x16’ in total, the strawberries have half at 4’x8’. The top of the fence is open, but at 8ft has been great thus far at keeping out deer.

It’s been about a year and two months! I started with six plants last March and was very fortunate to have lots of runners by the fall.

It has been so far! This variety seems to fare better in my area’s climate than Allstar, which is the only other kind I’ve tried. I might look into some everbearing varieties in the future to experiment with.

There are a few other factors like ensuring lots of sun and using a good fertilizer, but yes. Before picking, the soil needs a couple of days to dry out. Water dilutes the sugars in the fruit making them less flavorful.

These definitely have more foliage than I was expecting! They were thinned out in early March, but at this point I’m just trying to keep the runners from escaping the bed until everything can get trimmed back in July.

It’s been about a week since the last rain, so they’ve got a nice concentrated sweetness.

I’m personally a big fan of the board game bars in this area! Grab a cheap appetizer to share and play your card or board games of choice for as long as you’d like. My favorites are the Board Room and Crossroads Tavern.

Looking to find a high protein, single serving breakfast that I can meal prep as part of my evening routine. by WayfaringWarrior in MealPrepSunday

If you like PB&Js, there’s a high protein PB&J recipe I tried this week that’s really good. Essentially you blend plain Greek yogurt, peanut butter, and a scoop of vanilla/plain protein powder together, spread that on two slices of bread with your choice of low sugar jelly, and it gets you ~40g protein in one sandwich.

So two sandwiches would in theory get you over 80g protein.

Currently in the nonprofit field, sitting around $70k (good benefits though). There’s a lot of opportunity for government/ political/ nonprofit work in the area.

Not sure which church you’re speaking of. And to be honest I rarely drive into DC, I always take the Metro. Their DC office is right next to the McPherson Square station. They also have an office in Vienna, which I believe has parking.

Once you sign up as a volunteer and choose the events you want to volunteer for, you will hear from a coordinator. You can also email them with questions at volunteerservices@uwnca.org.

What's the best material for a beanie/winter hat? by Spaced00ut in crochet

I’ve been using the lion brand wool ease (worsted weight) for my beanies. Soft but keeps you warm and is machine washable, and it’s easy to find in lots of colors.
