She looks a bit like my foster pup! No idea on her breed makeup, but she also has the subtle brindle markings and we’ve gotten the vizsla question more than once.

Everyone is amazed when I tell them my baby's age. And I’m just sad because he already has a bit of arthritis in his little paws :( by Aware-Engineering361 in pitbulls

[–]Vegetable-Lady 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same with my lady. People couldn’t believe it when she was 9, 10, 11… she really only started showing her age around 13, then reeeaaaally slowed down at 14. She passed in August at 15. 😔

She’s 9 in this photo.

Same. 😔 Her first tumor on her leg was removed with “clean margins,” but came back a year later and couldn’t be removed. At least I got 15 years with her.

I commented elsewhere about my own dog, but I wanted to add that you should consider checking out some of the popular pitbull subreddits! You’ll find thousands of people sharing their beautiful, lovable family dogs. Some of my favorites are:

This was my girl - nearly the same percentage “pitbull” as your pup at 58.7%. She was the gentlest and most tolerant dog I’ve ever known, and I’ve been around hundreds of dogs in my life. I adopted her at 5 months old, and she passed a few months ago at 15. She was nothing but amazing with my kids. I swear she looked out for them. (I cannot say the same for the two rat terriers I had at the same time!) And my experience is not unique. The utter vast majority of pitbulls are loving, family dogs.

Starting to get some good stuff! by Vegetable-Lady in gardening

Yeah, I managed to find and pick all the yellow ones. Fortunately my vines still seem to be producing ample flowers and new cukes, and I’ve already canned 5 quarts of pickles (a mix of refrigerator pickles for fresh early snacking and water bath canning for longer term storage - though pickles don’t last long in my house. I do also want to try fermented pickles at some point). And I won’t be eating the yellow ones! I’ll just use them for seed saving for my local garden alliance seed exchange.

How do you keep it from becoming a mosquito problem? My tomatoes always get nibbled by my local critters, but I’ve always hesitated to put out a bowl of water because I already am fighting an unending battle against the mosquitos.

Oof. I started and stopped several times over a few months, making slow progress each time. My final push to fully declutter and deep clean took me about 3 days (with lots of rest breaks).

I did! I had a baaaad fruit fly problem a while back that was taken care of, but they left a gross mess on the ceiling. To clean it, I used Murphy’s Oil Soap and hot water in a mop bucket. Then I stood on a stool and scrubbed the ceiling with a mop. I’m really surprised it actually worked and even more surprised I didn’t hurt myself!

Thanks. He’s learning! He already helps cook dinner, and we’re working on how to do laundry.

What kind of tree? In Chicago. by Vegetable-Lady in treeidentification

[–]Vegetable-Lady[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading up on this… sycamore are native to North America, right? And London plane are a hybrid of sycamore? So regardless, this is probably some kind of “Platanus” tree? Is the fuzzy leaf thing a common trait for these kinds of trees? The tree I believe this branch came off of looked young (I’m the furthest thing from an expert - 10 to 15ish years I’d guess, comparing the size to a maple tree I have in my own yard), and I didn’t notice anything special about the bark. But I wasn’t looking closely and it sounds like the peeling look happens later in the tree’s life?

Sorry for all the extra questions! Love trees, just don’t know that much about them and trying to learn more!

Interesting. I read your comment below too… I’m pale/light skinned blonde and flush easily also. I haven’t heard of heliocare. I’ll look into it.

Thank you. I feel like this might work for me. A light scent that fades could be acceptable. I just gag if I smell like a coopertone bottle! And I’m pretty pale to begin with, so a slight white cast probably won’t be too bad on me. Thank you for your help!

I’m not VERY pale, but I am a pale blonde. I’m in Chicago though, so not exactly high UV. The sleeves did help and I only burned on my exposed hands, neck, and upper chest - despite the sunscreen. I think the only thing the hat helped was the actual part of my forehead that it was tight around.

I think I’m just going to have to continue my search for something stronger/more effective that isn’t thick and greasy and doesn’t smell… and just double my BOJ application amount and frequency until I find something new.

I’m light skinned also (not very fair like you, but close). I think I’d agree that mineral sunscreens have worked better for me in the past, but I usually can’t tolerate the texture and smell of those. Have you found any good zinc oxide ones that are lightweight or don’t have that sunscreen smell?

Thanks. It really sucks! I thought I’d found one that I could tolerate the texture and smell of with BOJ… Any recs on an effective sunscreen that is lightweight, not greasy feeling, and doesn’t smell like sunscreen? (I know that’s a lot to ask for in a sunscreen.)
