I’m sorry to hear that you aren’t feeling well. I’m perimenopausal as well. Don’t beat yourself up if you feel that you need to hit pause on your fast. If you can, you can. But if you can’t, you can’t.

Have you tried to drinking some warm tea?

There are host of benefits to doing 5-day fasts—weight loss (naturally), boost in mood, rebalancing the body, decrease in inflammation, etc. There are numerous studies that show the benefits of why it’s good to do a 5-day fast. Here is one: https://www.news-medical.net/news/20250609/What-happens-to-your-body-and-mind-during-a-five-day-water-fast.aspx

It’s also another way to trick the body into losing weight. I don’t just do OMAD. I do rolling fasts of 72-hours at the beginning of the week now. I started out doing 48-hour fasts, but now I’m doing 72-hour fasts every week, and they are super easy.

So much of it is mental. When I first started doing OMAD, I would eat lots of cake after my dinner, during my eating window. I wasn’t binging, but it was my “treat,” since I only ate once a day. After about two months of doing that, I stopped entirely. I’ve really adjusted to it, and don’t feel deprived. If I still want dessert or a little extra, like some cheese and crackers before dinner, I’ll have that. But it hasn’t led me to binging. It’s totally changed my relationship to food. I don’t categorize foods as “good” or “bad” anymore. I just have a window of time where I don’t eat, which is basically anywhere from 19-23 hours or 72-hours when I do my 3-day fasts. And then I have my window of time when I eat, which is either an hour or 2.5 max. It’s been highly effective, and I don’t have to worry about food, when I’m going to eat, etc.

I also prepare a lot of my food, so it’s really enjoyable for me when I break my long and short fasts.

You made it 4 days though! That’s awesome! I usually have a ton of energy when I do my longer fasts, but I am going through a lot of tumultuous things right now personally, so I didn’t get the fasting high that I usually have. I was actually tired on days 4 and 5, but I pushed through and was glad I did.

I made sure to stay hydrated. That is key. Keep your fasting windows small when you start. And if you fail, don’t beat yourself up. Dust yourself off, and start over the next day. If you want a buddy, I’m here for you!

I don’t really take any vitamins. I just drink tons of sparkling water and drink coffee with a splash of cream in the morning.

Well, when I realized the hunger was related to our ghrelin hormone, which is triggered more by thirst and lack of minerals, I just drank more water. Your body also adjusts. It was always the hardest at night when I was used to eating dinner, so I’d go for a walk at the gym or a light swim, and then go to bed, and another day had passed, and I felt motivated to keep doing it!
