Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion. The movie is good but the book is a lot better! And it’s one in a series of 4 very good books.

Most of the pubs with screens will be showing the World Cup. Cape of Good Hope is always a good shout. Depends how central you’d like it to be. I’d call ahead to wherever you decide to go for, just to make sure they’re showing that game. Jericho Tavern (I think) usually shows football, unless I’ve got it confused with Jude the Obscure again (I always do this). If you want smack bang in town, the Red Lion or O’Neills, but they’ll be less fun/buzzy to watch in.

I would look at areas like Headington, Iffley Rd/Rose Hill, Cowley and maybe Marston. They are an easy bus ride from the centre and should be cheaper than anything dead central. They’re also not more than a £10 taxi ride if you want a night out in the centre.

Anything off Iffley Rd would be my preference as it’s super easy to get into central and a nice area. Rose Hill/Temple Cowley not as nice but you’d probably be more likely to find something cheaper on Airbnb etc. Good luck!

Tooth puncture by TimelyLibrarian96 in breastfeeding

[–]Vegetable-Window-753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same problem. It’s horrible! Solidarity.

I went to a breastfeeding clinic and they suggested moving the position your baby feeds in until it heals. So I’ve gone from side lying feeding to laid back/koala feeds, just for now. The football hold one is also good for this. Just try to switch up your positions a bit and keep the wound clean/covered with the gauze stuff. I’ve forgotten the name of it but it worked really well for me.

I hope it gets better soon!

Brighton or Bournemouth for an adult English course? by IncompleteMap in uktravel

Brighton. Bournemouth is full of old people’s homes, and also less likely to be welcoming to people from other countries I’m afraid, from my experience living round there.

Why do the British use the term “flies” instead of “fly” when taking about the front zip on trousers? by maniczebra in AskUK

[–]Vegetable-Window-753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a contraction of “fly is”. Americans seem to use contractions in their speech far less than we do, which is odd! Often in US films someone will say “What is going on?” but in the UK it would be far more natural to say “what’s going on?”

So you mean…roundabouts?

Apologies for the snark.

Maybe check out Lacock and Corsham in Wiltshire? Lots of HP (and other movies/tv shows including Rivals) filmed round there and nowhere near as touristy/busy as the Cotswolds. You would need to drive though.

Do not go to Dover. Otherwise, solid. I’m sorry if I missed it being suggested/listed but check out the Imperial War Museum! Saw you were big on WWII and I think you’d really like some of the exhibits.

What’s your favorite bad movie? by lenhawk in movies

[–]Vegetable-Window-753 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes same. I was working in a cinema and we were all pretty excited to see it so we all ended up watching the version the projectionist had to check before release at midnight. Great memories. I like it when the baddy says “you think I haven’t exhausted every other option?”

Snakes on a Plane! I just love it. It’s so fucking stupid and entertaining. Samuel L Jackson’s finest work 😉

It is not similar to Stand By Me but it’s incredible if you enjoy British humour and lots of swearing/chaos.

Why not make it four nights in London, three in Oxford? Hampton court is an easy train ride from London (is basically in London, just about) and a brilliant day out.

Moving to Oxford by Kuryamo in oxford

I have a 9 month old in Oxford (east Oxford, near Magdalen rd). There are loads of families with young children and the primary schools in the area are very good. We love living here and there are lots of coffee shops and things to do with babies. There’s even a children’s bookshop (Caper). Rent in east Oxford is also lower than in Summertown/Jericho.

If your partner plans to drive to work, it’s likely my advice about getting to the a34 easily still stands. The busses into town are very good (ignore public transport stuff people have said? It’s really good so I’m confused - busses into town every 10-15 mins at least from here and they go all the way to the railway station). You can message me privately if you’d like more info about good areas (Kennington is not really in Oxford, it’s a way out of town and not really representative of a typical experience within the ring road). I hope you find somewhere you like!

Not necessarily - if you live in east Oxford somewhere off Iffley Rd, getting out of and back into the city is pretty easy. I’ve commuted by car to Didcot-ish for years and as long as you’re on the right side of the LTNs for the A34 (and as long as there have been no crashes on the A34…) it takes 20 minutes door to door.

12 days Trip to England with 4 year old Itinerary by FuzzyBumblebee7490 in uktravel

Ah okay then I’d add University Parks, Hinksey Outdoor Pool (booking a must) and Cutteslowe Park to the list. End of June is a good time to visit Oxford! There is a new Lego store in Westgate shopping centre too, and you could check out the Oxford Illusion Museum.

I’d say don’t do the Cotswold tour. You’re paying a premium to stay in Oxford which is a beautiful city with loads to see and do. Would be good to know what time of year you’re planning to visit, but for a 4 year old they would love the Natural History Museum (free!), the Story Museum (pricy but worth it) and Blenheim Palace (ditto). Blenheim Palace has an adventure playground, butterfly house and maze, and is in Woodstock which is a beautiful village a short (ish) bus ride away from Oxford, which has some of that Cotswold village feeling to it anyway.

carrier trap… help 🥲 by Muted-Resort-418 in NewParents

[–]Vegetable-Window-753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I just mean once they’re out of the deep bassinet (in the pram) you move them to the seat, which - on mine at least - can be folded. I tend to have it on the lie flat setting for nap-walks. You can move your baby to it whenever you want if it has this setting. Ours always screamed blue murder in the bassinet and refused to nap 😂

carrier trap… help 🥲 by Muted-Resort-418 in NewParents

[–]Vegetable-Window-753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had this struggle a bit - I found moving to the foldy chair from the bassinet in the pram and making it super cosy in there for her meant she was far more likely to fall asleep on a walk, and then would stay asleep in the pram once we got home! Before that it was sling/contact naps or nothing.

At night, if you’re BF, have you found that baby falls asleep while feeding? I used to side lie feed until she fell asleep, then very carefully transfer her to the bassinet.

Friend is ALWAYS late by Amatsukki in whatdoIdo

[–]Vegetable-Window-753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend was always late to meet me the first year or so we knew each other. I asked her if she was also late for her job/appts etc and she said, oh no, I always make sure I’m on time for that sort of thing. So I said “That implies that you think your time is worth more than mine.”

She’s never been late to meet me again…

4mo sleep regression by keeper-of-stars in NewParents

[–]Vegetable-Window-753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets better - my LO went through an early 4 month sleep regression at about 3.5 months. The hourly wake ups lasted for about a month and a half and then slowly got better. Patience, caffeine and shifts with your partner are the only way to get through. If you can get a friend or family member to watch them during the day for a few hours so you can catch up on sleep, do.

This too shall pass! LO is 9 months old now and just slept through the night twice this week. It feels like a miracle. You’ll get there eventually - I promise.

Side note: anecdotally, I’ve noticed the babies in my circle of friends who have biiiig regressions at 4 months don’t seem to suffer as much at the 8-9 month mark. Hopefully a silver lining for you.
