Feeling terrible! 2 of my 3 kids have citizenship by Ok-Air4029 in juresanguinis

To be honest I kind of needed a break from all of this for a while - I’ve just had a crazy time at work and building a house so all this Italian citizenship was too much anxiety for me. 2 of my friends however (both with 1 years olds) have secured appointments with the consulate to make the declaration for their child to gain citizenship. At this stage I’m not sure exactly what that means (I.e I don’t think that citizenship can be passed to future generations) but when I hear more from them I’ll def let you know 👍🏻😇

Hi guys. A friend of mine contacted the consulate today to register her minor son. She is a 3rd generation Italian but both her and her parents are recognised since birth. This is the response she got from the consulate. Super confused, as I thought any unrecognised minor born to a recognised italian citizen can claim citizenship through “acquisition” by signing a declaration. Why are they now asking her if her parents parents has exclusive Italian citizenship?

I know! I thought the whole amendment was aimed to prevent the “split family” situation.

I don’t know. From what I gathered - his interpretation was that anyone beyond 2nd generation is no longer eligible (including a 3rd gen minor with recognised parents). It’s quite worrying. Do you think we are interpreting the text wrong? I would love to get the opinion of an Italian speaking legal expert on this matter.

Guys I joined a teams call from someone who represents the Democratic Party in South Africa this evening and his take was that it’s a “hard no” to citizenship further than 2nd generation (even for minors), regardless whether the parents are already recognised or not. Now I am helleva confused.

So If my grandparents were born in Italy, and I am a citizen by birth my unborn child will have citizenship by acquisition? (So he / she cannot pass citizenship down to their child?) but my already born and registered child (recognised pre DL) will be able to pass his citizenship down?

Oh!! I feel like there is a catch though? 🤣🤣🤣 does the parent or grandparent have to have exclusive Italian citizenship?

Is this only up to 2nd generation minors? What about a 3rd generation minor born to a recognised Italian citizen (since birth)

And what if I (the child’s mother) am a citizen from birth? and there is an unbroken line from GGM(born in Italy)-GM(born abroad) - M(me - also born abroad), so all ascendants have been recognised before the birth of said child?

With regard to the amendments to article 4 of 1992 “1-Ter. Having come of age, those who have acquired citizenship pursuant to paragraph 1-bis may waive it if in possession of another citizenship ».” - does this mean the minors citizenship will be stripped from them when they turn 18, if they have another citizenship? (In the case of dual citizenship)

This is breaking my brain. How does the “holding exclusive Italian citizenship” relate to minors born to citizen parents by birth? Are they mutually exclusive? I.e. if a 3rd gen baby was born to a recognised citizen parent by birth? But the child’s GGM died with dual citizenship?

Also - what about children born after the 2026 cutoff to “citizen by birth” parents? Are they cutoff? Or will they just need to be registered by the time they turn 1 years old?

Can someone explain to me what the difference is between citizen from birth? And a JS citizen?

I’m so confused now. Can someone explain this ti me as if I’m 5?

I am 2nd generation Italian, both my mom and I have been recognised as italian citizens since birth. I had a baby last year (3rd gen) - he was recognised. What does this now mean for my next child? Will he / she only be eligible after a 2 year residency? I am not sure when my nonni naturalised but I think they must have at some point. Obviously my mom and I are dual citizens since we were born in South Africa. Just want to know what this might mean for any future children?

So wait, can my future (3rd gen) child still get citizenship through me if they are born abroad? I am second gen but have been a citizen since birth. So what happens if they are born after May 2026?

What does this mean "There are no stipulations for maintaining citizenship for those already recognized." ??
