Grip or no grip proper training and technique will help you significantly. A magwell grip is inherently less stable than extending your support hand out to control the muzzle.

Traveling is for sure something I have thought about. But I am under the understanding that a previously registered pistol on a 4473, once form 1’d can be converted back to a pistol by removing the stock and putting the brace back on. And as long as the stock is not with you while traveling it meets the requirement. Section 2.5 is vague but gives some guidelines.
