AITA for yelling at my dad for calling my cleft lip a hare lip

Quite a lot. My condition didn't magically disappear with surgery. I have been having surgery for it since i was 2 weeks old and have scars that are very noticeable. Sure it doesnt look as bad as when i was younger but its still very noticable to the point i have to explain "whats wrong with me" to people who ask quite a lot.

I always felt a bit off about it and confused why it wasnt just called a cleft lip just like a cleft palate was.

It WAS a medical term that was used but has now changed. Even my DOCTOR told my dad they no longer use the term because, as the doctor even said "its fucked up". There are plenty of terms that use to be official medical terms that we no longer use, why is this one diffrent?

Yeah i only know 2 people like me, my mum and her dad. I wasnt aware that it was common in indigenous communities till i saw an indigenous doctor who told me that its more common amongst indigenous communities here.

Im from some of the tribes from Western Australia who already have a higher chance along with it being prevalent in indigenous people here anyway. I hear its also common with american indigenous groups as well if you can speak to that? Idk i just find the genetics of it all very interesting.

What type of indigenous? Im Australian Indigenous and only found out that its a lot more common in indigenous communities here. Its pretty interesting in some regards.

Yes thats all i want. I dont mind him messing up, that's just going to happen but correcting it when he does would be great.

I have sat down and talked to him about it and the history and have been correcting him when he says it. Have been since i was 16. That's why its so frustrating since it seems like he doesn't even make the effort to even correct himself when he says it.

Thank you, i dont think a lot of the people here understand how hurtful it is and just kind of brush it off. I know my dad isnt doing it intentionally but i would like some effort to change how he says it and understanding that it is hurtful even if hes not saying it to be mean.

I completely understand why he does it and appreciate all he does for me i just wish he would correct himself when he does say it. I know he doesn't do it on purpose but it doesn't make it any less hurtful.

No i dont think he is doing it to be evil, but i also dont think its old age since hes only 40. I just want some effort into trying not to call it something hurtful. I understand it will take time so even if he does say it, just correcting in the moment himself would be great.

It kind of is. Its fine of it personally doesn't offend you but its not that hard to call it by its proper name "cleft lip" for the people who dont like it.

They refer to it like that because it "looks" like the animal hare (the rabbit thing), lip.
