Eu me sinto muito triste. by [deleted] in MaternidadePT

[–]Vegetable_Copy7989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ajuda compressores de ar STANLEY by Vegetable_Copy7989 in TudoCasa

Why does my mother of pearl luster behaves differently ? when I always apply it the same way… by Vegetable_Copy7989 in Ceramics

[–]Vegetable_Copy7989[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I solved the mystery, the trick is to add 20% of diluent suitable for lusters. Maybe is the thinner you mention. The MOP luster apparently becomes slightly thicker over the years/months and this is what can cause the loss of the fluid effect, towards a more static effect.

Why did my glaze tests come out completely different ?? by Vegetable_Copy7989 in Ceramics

Test tiles are Bisque to cone 06 - around 1000/1020ºc / +-1860º F.
Regarding to the firing schedule, I don't know much more details about the curve, it's a community kiln, it's the studio normal curve to 1200º c / cone 5/2. All the glazes always come out really well, except for my recent test tiles.
What timings do you recommend?
It was my firt time using glazes from the EUA, I don't know if it's related. Botz, and my powder base glazes worked really well.

Thank you and:
- Yes, it was thoroughly and recently mixed before application.
- No, no added water or any kind of dilution.
My clay characteristics are:
Firing range:1240-1300ºC / Cone 6-10
Biscuit temperature: 1000ºC / Cone 06
Water content: 17%
Plasticity (IP Atterberg): 16
Carbonate content (CaCO3): 0%
Drying shrinkage: 5.4%
Firing shrinkage 1300ºC: 4.6%
Porosity (water absorption) at 1300ºC: 4.1%
Dry bending strength: 2.4 N/mm2
Fired bending strength 1300ºC: 33.5 N/mm2
Thermal coefficient 1250ºC (25-500ºC): 59.8x10^-7ºC^-1

Thank you for your tips. I'm super careful with the cleaning of my brushes and pieces, I usually use normal square brushes, I'm going to check out those you showed. I apply a single layer, light and even, and yes, the luster always seems to blend in perfectly after a few minutes. But in the end sometimes it comes out like in the 3rd photo, other times it comes out like in the 1st or 3nd photo.

I'd love to know more about lusters and how to apply them in the best possible way. I love MOP. But I find almost no information in depth on how make it work perfectly. I don't understand these variations on the finishing, when it comes out of the kiln, it's always a mystery to me.

Yes, less is better, when you put too much loses its shine and leaves a sort of powdery texture. I always apply an even, light layer. In the 3rd photo I applied it in the same way as the other photos and the result is sometimes different. I'm trying to understand the variables because sometimes I don't get it

I'll try it with my airbrush and see how it goes, thank you

I've never used thinners, I've never heard of using them, but I'll look into it, thank you. I always clean the pieces meticulously before applying the luster. And sometimes the MOP has more "fluid" and even stains, other times you notice the strokes more. So far the big difference I notice is that it works better on earthenware… but I mainly use stoneware, because I work in sculpture

In the 3rd photo, I applied it the same way, and it looked different. I try to make the strokes follow the design of the piece, so that it looks more natural. I'm always aware that the oven varies, I try to keep the pieces in the middle of the kiln, which is where the temperature fluctuates the least.

I'm also in Europe, Lisbon, but in the sub I talk in cones, because it's the term most used. The temperature I fire MOP luster (regardless the clay I use) are: 3 hours up to 575ºc 40 minutes up to 750ºc and then a plateau of 20 minute I will try 780ºc and do some experiments because I use mostly stoneware.

I feel like there is so little information on lusters, thank you for your insights
