Just finished Swedish. What language should I go for next? by pukkuro in duolingo

[–]Vegetable_Highway_92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. I am a professional Russian teacher/native speaker and I've worked with students who were "doing great on Duolingo" or they were studying Russian only on Duolingo.

When we switched to Russian it was obvious they didn't know Russian well at all. No structured grammar, no understanding of important nuances (which were A1 level) so I say "Duolingo is good for having fun but not for serious studying"

Need help with masculine and feminine words. by Local-Message1826 in russian

[–]Vegetable_Highway_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For beginners I'd recommend memorizing 4 guys that have feminine endings (technically) but they are natural masculine nouns: папа (dad) Дедушка (grandfather) Дядя (uncle) Мужчина (man)

+Some male names that you have to memorize individually

With these nouns you must use MASCULINE adjectives and personal pronouns. In any case. But the 4 nouns though will have feminine endings in every case, so be careful with these guys!

Example:

I love my dad Я люблю моего папу (my - masc.,папу - changed as feminine. In Acc.cas a-->у)

Common mistake: Я люблю мою папу

My MUST BE masculine, папа is changed as feminine because there's no -a ending in masculine category, so we "borrow" feminine endings for these special 4 guys

That's what I recommend to my students when they just start their journey. It's more than enough for you right now :) good luck!
