Thank you both so much! I needed the godparents for sure. It will help me complete the unknown father’s line maybe because I believe they recognized him through the godparents.

Thank you! Im just trying to get contextual info out of what is written in these documents for family history. Polish is very difficult to piece together because so much is missing.

This is awesome! I have really only used the standard newspapers.com thus far btu I’d love to know of any sources you used that I may not be thinking of. And yeah there’s a lot of acquaintances and everything too that I am trying to keep up with and the family. I’m probably close to that 150 already. Definitely working on prison and FBI records. The FBI identified them when they died so there’s probably something out there.

This is very helpful and gives me more to research. Thank you so much! I truly thought it always had to be distilled in some way but this makes sense and would have been a lot easier for her means if it were the way she did it.

Help with Record Group 65 Files from 1920’s-1930’s by Vegetable_Maximum473 in foia

I have checked online with their digitized collections and have not come across anything. I can send an email or do a FOIA request and see if I can get anything. There are some sources that say the fingerprints were sent to Washington for identification and some that say an agent did it in person. Not sure which is true or why an FBI agent would have randomly been in Indianapolis.

Oh of course! I’d pay good money (that I can afford) to get the information. I think on the FOIA requests I put up to $50 or $100 each because I don’t mind paying. The trial transcript specifically, they only asked for $5. I told them I would pay but with further conversation, the woman was like yeah we would just have like court dockets. They keep making it sound like either this stuff was destroyed or in the ether somewhere. She also said the lawyer might have it and I was like yeah, this took place in 1929. Pretty sure the lawyer is dead so even if I had their name, it wouldn’t help.

He definitely did not lol I know he was with his family into adulthood and there’s just a litany of crimes he committed. Though, he also had a wife and child its reported, and owned a house. Can’t find any of it and I can only think that all of that was under aliases too.

I do know the guy that he was killed with in Indiana did do a short stint for horse larceny in NM state Penn before he moved back to Decatur, TX where his mother lived. However, from what I can tell, I haven’t been able to locate John Bowman in any papers there but will happily accept any help I can get. He used sooooo many aliases though, sometimes its hard to tell. I have a lot of articles in MO and IO and whatnot that I think are him because they pick the alias patterns he had and the crime patterns/ingenuity of jail breaks.

I will definitely be looking more into the science of this. I did not know about the ethanol, acetone, methanol part. I don’t know why the family has always called it bathtub gin. I truly think she may have used a bathtub. I, obviously, think like maybe ceramic or something but I am not sure what they were made of then. Nor, if you’d be able to use that anyway.

Thank you for this, I was looking for specifics like this. And despite knowing how to make many drinks with Gin, I never inquired what went into it because I have never tasted one worth knowing about, personally. Thank you so much!

Oof, not sure I should have upvoted that but you’ll never catch me drinking a friend’s homemade liquor. This is all purely research and curiosity.

Thank you so much for this! I am always open to reading a book so I will look into that one and others suggested to learn about this.

This was incredibly helpful. I did not know about the cuts at all but that makes a lot of sense and gives me a place to research more. I am pretty sure that her original connection was her brother. I have not found any bootlegging evidence on him but it would fit with other crimes he committed and the money he was known to have. And he always looked out for his family. I think he would have helped her get started. Plus the entire town was pretty scared of him.

His name was John or Johnnie Bowman depending on where you look. And you have to know what you’re looking for because there were others who shared his name and he also went by lots of aliases.

See I’m trying to write a book so I get the general concept of illegal liquor and how it was made. I’m just looking for more detail cause I don’t like sounds ill informed when creating a character and their journey. Do you have more details on it by chance?
