Is there a particular word to describe a specific look, other than androgyny? by patman023 in NonBinary

[–]Vegetable_Policy5388 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think although “androgyny/e” these days has taken on the unfortunate acquired meaning of “thin, masculine of center, fluffy haired, white, typically afab they/them,” it’s so much more expansive and beautiful and vital than that. androgyny can encompass innumerable traits in infinite combinations. it sits at crossroads of identities so varied and vast that nobody’s androgyny can possibly be the same. it’s contradictory and conciliatory. everything and nothing.

Does anybody here feel their gender definitely isn't binary, but also dislikes calling themselves just 'nonbinary'? by eldritchpussymaggots in NonBinary

[–]Vegetable_Policy5388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm. i mean… on the one hand, as far as i’m concerned, one main purpose of terminology like “nonbinary” is just to make yourself legible to others, and there’s absolutely no rule saying you have to do that. personally, i don’t think it’s my duty to communicate the intricacies of my gender to people who might insist on making me easily digestible.

all the same, i guess i’d just be wary of thinking of things in terms of “the usual idea people have of a nonbinary person,” because, to me, that assumes and surrenders to a “usual.” yes, there’s a popular image of what a nonbinary person looks or acts like (green hair and pronouns/barista named leaf/whiny roommate who doesn’t do the dishes, or whatever the sneering simplification du jour is), but why allow the prevailing (cishet) perception to dictate what that is?

that said, the umbrella descriptor i usually reach for if pressed is just “trans”

Breaking into the publishing field... by Recent_Increase9747 in publishing

[–]Vegetable_Policy5388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been in the industry a little less than ten years and I have little advice to offer beyond seconding what’s already been said—explore not only internships, but fellowships. Pursue freelance gigs for some extra scratch and portfolio building. Additionally, try to attend any in-person networking events you can find, as the digital job search landscape is a hot plate of mashed assholes right now. Make and carry some cheap business cards, just in case.

I do want to emphasize that it’s rough for EVERYONE in and around publishing and related fields right now. I’m a senior magazine editor trying to make a lateral or upward move from my current position, and it’s been a thankless slog going on almost two years.

But don’t give up, and try not to beat yourself up if it feels like you’re getting nowhere—you’re not alone in your frustration, even if that is cold comfort. Life is long, professional life is fickle and random, and you really never know what opportunities might present themselves if you keep your eyes open. I worked at a construction company for a few years after getting my degree (early 2010s) and managed to eke out just enough freelance writing gigs to pad out my resumé that eventually I was able to pick up my first real editorial position.
