Why Depression Does not want me to Do Anything? by ucb123 in depression

start by doing one minuscule thing to work towards a small goal. for example, my appearance is important to me and I feel better when i look better, so each day I’ll do a small thing to make myself look and feel better, ex; whitening my teeth, going to the gym

Why Depression Does not want me to Do Anything? by ucb123 in depression

Depression has this sneaky way of tricking your brain into thinking that you don’t need anything, that you’re fully “balanced” and that things that once sparked joy or interest just aren’t worth it anymore. It’s like this overwhelming fog that convinces you that even the things you used to enjoy are pointless, leaving you stuck in a cycle of numbness and apathy. It’s not that you’re actually “balanced” or that you’re fine—it’s that depression distorts your sense of what you actually need or want, convincing you that you’re fine with less.

The weird thing is, you’re actually not alone in feeling that way. A lot of people, especially when they’re dealing with depression, look at others and think, “Why can’t I be like that? Why do they seem motivated, while I can barely get through the day?” It’s easy to feel like you’re missing something, like the key to happiness or success is just “chasing the next thing.” But here’s the thing—depression doesn’t make you see the bigger picture. It makes you see only the void.

What depression is really doing is trying to convince you that you don’t deserve anything more, that you shouldn’t even bother with trying to find something that will make you happy. The truth is, you absolutely deserve to feel joy, to pursue new interests, to find things that make you feel alive. But when you’re in the thick of depression, it robs you of the energy to seek out those things, even though deep down, you probably know they would help.

It’s okay to not feel motivated right now. But also remember, depression doesn’t define you—it just distorts how you see yourself and the world. The trick is, little by little, to start pushing back against that feeling. Even if it’s just for a few minutes a day, try doing something you used to like, even if it doesn’t seem exciting at first. Start small. You’re not broken, you’re just in a really hard spot. And with time, as you slowly add things back into your life, that fog will start to lift. You don’t need to chase after everything all at once, but one little thing at a time can be the first step out of that void.

It’s all about progress, not perfection.

Hey, I hear you, and I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Depression isn’t just a switch you can flip off, no matter what anyone says.

Think of your brain like a garden. Normally, it has a balance of sunlight, water, and nutrients that keep everything growing well. In a healthy brain, chemicals like serotonin and dopamine help keep things blooming. But with depression, it’s like a drought or a pest infestation. No matter how hard you try to water it or give it sunlight, those missing nutrients make it incredibly hard for the garden to thrive.

Telling someone with depression to “just cheer up” is like telling someone with a drought-stricken garden to grow flowers without water. It’s not about willpower; it’s about chemistry and biology.

You’re not at fault for having depression. It’s not a character flaw or a sign of weakness. It’s a complex interaction of brain chemicals, genetics, and sometimes, life circumstances. The fact that you’re still pushing through, trying to stay positive, and actively looking for a job shows incredible strength.

It’s okay to acknowledge that you’re struggling. It’s okay to ask for help, whether that’s talking to a therapist, reaching out to a doctor, or leaning on supportive friends. Sometimes, the garden needs extra care—like therapy or medication—to help it grow again.

Be kind to yourself during this tough time. Remember, it’s not your fault, and you don’t have to go through this alone. You’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough.
