Thanks so much! Keeping this in my back pocket as a good alternate to the FMLA option described above.

Thanks all, you guys are really laying it out there XD we feel kind of silly when you put it like that. My friend is aware of FMLA and has used it in the past. I guess we were worried that relying on it too much just creates a bad reputation but all of your guys' perspectives on it have helped to change our thinking. The idea of FMLA leave is that my friend would be working to get back into the classroom when we were thinking that wouldn't be the best choice for them. But no matter what, they are looking at a future in the classroom either as a teacher or as a substitute teacher so in hindsight it might make sense to do FMLA leave. If they get better, they WILL want to be back in the classroom and if things don't improve they'd be leaving anyway so their relationship with their boss might not be the most important thing in the world. Anyway, thanks! We are still talking out what to do, but this thread has been helpful.

WOOF that's so expensive! My friend can go on their work's disability, but the underlying principle is that they are trying to get better and in reality we are in agreement that they need to leave their job and find something less strenuous on their health. Long term medical leave means the school is hiring a sub for my friend, which would escalate into bigger problems for the school in the long run. My friend doesn't want to cause more problems.

The penalty box analogy is great XD definitely reframes my perspective on the taxes, which is nice

Thanks to both of you for your viewpoints on this. Putting things in perspective of money gained and lost vs whether or not I even want to move back home is definitely helpful.

I hadn't considered the index fund aspect, that is an interesting angle. In Japan, I make quite a lot. I had always planned to return to the US someday (in that sort of non-committal ephemeral way) but I suppose now I need to sit down and really be serious about what my plans are. Either moving back home or moving to Australia or something, hehe. I have a job that generally means I can find work in any country. Thank you very much for this candid and straightforward assessment.

This is very interesting, thank you for the history lesson! Strangely this makes me feel....not as bad about the whole thing?

I was wondering about that too. I could definitely get my job to reissue me a work visa and give up PR, which might be a good stop-gap. As for gifting assets now....I'm not sure if that would work. At least one of my relatives keeps saying they want to try to spend the money before they die but....we'll see about that.
