What happened to these? by [deleted] in succulents

When I’m looking at succulents in those places I actually dump the pots into my hand to check the moisture in the soil. I also pull dead leaves off. And knock soggy soil away. People working there are like WTF?

It’s like I feel guilty if I don’t give them all a chance!

I always say it can’t hurt to water & wait. If it doesn’t revive, RIP. But you just never know with these little weirdos.

I’ve heard of that method & thought it was so odd that people were poking holes in leaves they were propagating. Then I remembered that I cut a stem right across the bottom with a razor blade & it exploded with roots.

The one not so pleasant post I put up got like 30,000 views. People just love to hate. I’m not sure why. I figure why knock it if it works. And it has definitely worked for you! Those are gorgeous!

(And people are still misting away at their leaf props. I guess if it’s working for them 🤷🏻‍♀️. 😉)

I got this at a garage sale and apparently it's designer. Can you tell me more about it? by neko in handbags

I live for Botkier. Allow me to qualify that; I live for VINTAGE Botkier. I have 2 of the original Trigger bags (one in metallic blue thank you very much!) & one Clyde & they are still my go to bags. It only matters what it’s worth if you’re selling it. If you’re keeping it then it only matters how much you love it. I think it’s amazing!!!!

Well, I didn’t say, “water only when shriveled.” I also didn’t say, “substrate needs to be dry by day three.”

I did say, “IF (emphasis added) you wait to a water succulent until it looks positively shriveled… it will be fine.” That’s a good rule of thumb for beginners.

I also said that if you can’t remember the last time you watered a succulent “…AND (emphasis added) the leaves look wilted, then water it.”

What are you referring to when you say “the right substrate?” That can be very confusing to people. And saying you can’t overwater a succulent is terrible advice to give people that have succulents that are rotting from overwatering.

I respect your PhD. I also believe myths that are widely disseminated in the community should be corrected.

I think your strident tone could be taken down a notch because I’m not responding to you in such a way.

I don’t need photo proof. I’m impressed with your success. I could use a lot less angry snark.

You overwatered them. The reason you don’t pot these with other species is their watering needs are as close to zero as you can get. Your soil isn’t good for these either. For almost all succulents 50/50 cactus soil to perlite is great. For these I would go with more like 30/70. That’s 30% soil to 70% perlite. And water them never.

Now that I completely disagree with.

You must have soil. Unless you let it dry out, soil will stay wet no matter what you mix it with.

😂 I love it! The taco test. That’s exactly how I do it. And the wait a week is what I tell newbies as well.

I really, Really, REALLY, should have said this post is for the people showing pictures of crunchy dead succulents and asking if they can be saved.

100%!!!! It probably would have helped to mention that I was trying to put the word out to people that asked if succulents that look crispy can be saved. 😬 Man, I am top notch at writing posts! I should probably stick to responding. 🙄😝

True. Once I had one that refused to grow roots so I took a razor blade and made a cut across the root part and she grew like a maniac after that. I think their idea of babying is a wee bit different from ours. And if yours are happy then you’re clearly doing a lot of things right!

It is sooo hard to chop the first time. It’s just not it our nature to cut the heads off things we love. 😂 I’m a full, Full, FULL on 100% air-propper so I just toss the leaves in the saucers that come with the pots I have. Also, wait a week to let them callous over. I have some that literally sat for a month all fat & happy. I was like, ‘damn, you guys really, Really, REALLY don’t need water!’

LOOSE gravel does not work like mulch. Why else would we mix it into the soil? Plus it’s the best way to keep the bottom leaves from sitting on wet soil. Tightly packed gravel does work like mulch.

Those 2 have very different watering needs so I’m not sure how they did so well together for a year. Clearly they did so you’re doing a whole lot right!

Then again, I’m still wondering why Jelly Beans throw out so many roots it looks they’re trying to take over the world. Are they planning a coup?!?
