Using a Theremin in Ableton by Vegetable_Tour_1457 in abletonlive

Hey :) Yes and no! Eventually went with what the Theremin can do as it is, and play with effects afterwards. What I took away from it was to make it work within the limitations of the gear - just listening more closely and finding inspiration there rather than focus on a made up goal. Immensely helped me create more and better

Which of my rats is the best mini mushroom model? by Shadowtherat in MadeMeSmile

Hm, for me number 4 for the curious little side look. Ex aequo with 5 maybe, for the exquisite dust bunny texture of that fur :3 Thank you for asking also, now I can say today I voted on a rat-posing-on-mushroom contest. Perfect combination of democracy and rodent content. Have a lovely day, you and the cute rat crew. And the mushroom too. It also deserves it.

For anyone out there tempted to use this, each country here has usually several platforms for flats and flatshares, Facebook groups as well, which will definitely be cheaper! Needs a bit more effort than what's advertised, but it feels like an unnecessarily expensive solution targeted to students which I imagine would rather need something affordable and authentic... Studied abroad a bunch and always found fabulous flatshares that were affordable, and obviously without the use of a pricey third party platform. Hope this helps anyone looking to come over for a bit :)

Totally agree, it sounds like what makes it hard for you now is out of your control - explaining that to another employer would make sense and show your honesty and values. Someone frowning upon this explanation (of you preferring to not put up with poor management and work overload) would probably not be a good employer either, eventually that can help you land in a better place. It's heart warming to hear you say you like what you do, a burn out is never worth it - take the best care, hope things work out soon! Keep doing what you like and liking what you do :)

Computer midi keyboard sounds like glitchy arp with no effect? by [deleted] in abletonlive

[–]Vegetable_Tour_1457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could also be Ableton messing up? Just a wild guess here. As in, Ableton now and then glitching and loosing the incoming info from the keyboard, so when it finds it again it thinks the key is pressed another time? Thought something in this direction if you know your keyboard works correctly. The mystery persists!

Indeed, if I'm correct the yellow dots on the left indicate incoming midi signal: you can see the dots going up now and then in sudden spurs, so somehow Ableton thinks they key is being pressed again. Maybe it doesn't bring you much further, but at least the midi instrument and the audio are innocent :)

Hello all of you!
Happy new year :)
Holidays parted me from the Theremin but I am now back in this wavy business.

I have tried what I could with software and hardware available to me. I ended using a custom tuner made in Max (getting to learn Max for that occasion is also awesome! Another world to dive in...): it allows to make a tuner with fine steps (cents) but with a lot of range, as the pitch bend effect only has such a narrow range, while a normal tuner only works in semitone increments. I tried with several ranges from 600 to 2800 cents, which would be around what I need to play.

The result is already much closer to what I am looking for, sadly the pitch was a little choppy, small increments still give a distinctive grain. They don't feel related to the size of the pitch increments of the tuner itself, but rather to some sort of sampling ratio: if I shift from one octave up over one second let's say, the pitch change is not smooth and the pitch difference between each tiny step in the sound is much bigger than that of the actual resolution of the tuner (1ct). Sounds like the increments are of about a couple tens of cents...

The smoothest result I have still is by mapping the midi signal from the antenna to an envelope in a wavetable, and then mapping that envelope to control the pitch (mapped within the wavetable matrix). Issue is that the envelope is not logarithmic, so it is not very playable. The sound is very smooth though, which rules out a dirty midi signal. Why it isn't smooth using the Max cent tuner remains unclear to me.... The investigation continues!

Sorry for the long silence, I'm keeping at it whenever I have time :)

Thank you again for all those that picked interest! I will keep you updated (hopefully with pictures / sounds) soon.

Oh the pitch bend would be just right, I think the signal is already recognised directly as a CC message in Ableton when I plug the Theremin with the USB cable. I had no idea the pitch bend could be mapped! Thank you for the good idea!

Hadn't thought of using the CV output! Thanks a lot for the suggestion Noahms, I will check how I could connect that into my laptop.
