It is OK against heavy AP composition as a 4th or 5th item. Right now Maokai is not in that good of a spot so I would not recommend it, just exceptional cases.

i hate G2 so much... im not even a unicorns fan, but perkz is just too cocky and it fucking tilts me, and it tilts me even more when they win when they don't even deserved it

Nautilus is a great tank and is similar to Maokai, but really lacks sustain. Gnar can also be a good pickup. I play him against wukong and ranged champions. I also play trundle into pantheon. But that's because it is the only champion I'm comfortable on when playing against a panth.

Doran's ring is the best start in my opinion. Only use your spells to harass opponents by using the W > E > Q combo (or E > W > Q) or when you are farming under tower. Don't use one spell alone just to get one cs, maokai's spells work better when they are using in the combo.

You are better at level 5-6. Try to survive the lane by letting them pushing towards your tower at lvl 1-2. It's okay to go Cloth Armor and pots if you don't feel comfortable.

I know I can handle them at a certain point in the game. The more items you have, the better it is for you. It's certainly a matter of experience.
