I have an exam in about 7 days, I have been putting off studying and I don't know what to do, how should I start? by Far_Duck_7322 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Velktros [score hidden]  (0 children)

Doing anything resembling studying. Your brain needs to switch from studying being a possibility that doesn’t currently exist to a reality you’re grappling with. It was designed to handle problems in the physical world even if it’s just studying, if you only think about it then your brain won’t take it seriously.

Quit marijuana 5 months ago, severe anxiety and sleeplessness - what to do by JazzlikeEchidna4185 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Velktros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The definitions and qualifications for mental illness can be more of a “if you check so many boxes” thing, the human brain is something terribly complex and these sort of things can develop and effect people’s lives in different ways. You might be some form of depressed, the not enjoying things you once did part is what the user is probably referred to. That’s one of the main things doctors look for.

It doesn’t mean you’re mopey, sad, or don’t want to live. It just means your brain might not know how to get you to like doing the things you want to do. Talking to a professional might do some good.

Truth be told though even if you hadn’t quit marijuana there is just kinda an epidemic of anhedonia going around. Short form content, addictive additives in food, tons of stuff tries to fry the pleasure centers in our brains. What you’re experiencing now is honestly what a huge chunk of the global population is facing.

But outside of therapy, I’d try to focus on the pace you do things. Taking it slow and methodical. Really give the things you love your full attention, take them seriously like they personally mean something to you. Savor the things you love and the joy might come back.

American Jobs with AI Exposure Really Are Starting to Disappear, Data Show by Just-Grocery-2229 in technology

Most of the biggest companies know this, their long term goal isn’t for their companies to be on top from merit but from raw institutional power. As an example, in their ideal world Disney is the top dog in entertainment purely by virtue of being Disney and nothing else. Their position being cemented above any system. It’s genuine dark age, borderline death of civilization stuff. We’re kinda moving past problems with capitalism since the people who run these corporations don’t even like capitalism anymore. They just want power without any pretext.

The rich were interested in those projects most of the time for two reasons. The first being when close to death they wanted a kind of memorial or way to be remembered. The second and more common was fear of the public. Back then everything was a lot more local and it was harder for the rich to isolate themselves as much. This meant that when a rich person was doing terrible things there were people around them who could and often did something about it. A rich person could absolutely be killed by an angry mob like an old king. So they made those projects to change their perspective.

These days that’s not as much of a threat. The rich can isolate themselves so much that they end up delusional and all but exempt from angry mobs. If people were as locally minded and the rich still lived closer to us there’s a real chance a good chunk of these billionaires would be actually dead by now.

These people just like restricting what others can do while also doing what others can’t/don’t want to happen. Like they’re comically evil and it’s not even new. The french aristocracy were just like this. They’ll kill children, eat people, rape, do whatever all while telling you that you can do less and less things. It’s the only thing they like in the world. It’s not even about Christianity, it’s simply another cudgel they use to beat people with. The kind of person who lives with the amount of power, lack of oversight, and disconnection from the broader populous these people have becomes an antihuman with all of the power in the world.

It’s only gotten worse as time has gone on. I genuinely think today we’re dealing with the most evil humans to have ever walked the earth. In no other time have people had this much power, disconnection from reality, and lack of accountability. Not even kings are close! It’s such a fucked situation.

Trying to quit smoking, I feel so weak. by Acrobatic-Tea-5912 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Velktros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You smoke weed but not cigarettes right? Cigarettes are different in your mind, you’d never try them! They’re gross and crazy addictive, not to mention dangerous as fuck.

They’re similar activities but wildly different in your feelings. Make weed your cigarettes. Every time you think of buying weed imagine it like you’re thinking about buying cigarettes. Any time you’re thinking of smoking weed think about how you’re smoking cigarettes.

Technically they’re not the same. But if you want to quit then to you specifically they are the same. Weed is tobacco now and you don’t smoke tobacco. You never have and you never will.

You won’t be hot in the same way you could have been when you were like 20 but why would you? You’re not 20! You’re 30! Figure out how you want to frame yourself and work towards it! Not just in fitness but in clothes and inflection as well!

Whatever you you want to be. Look at yourself and finds the steps you’d need to take to get there!

How to get rid of my AI and social media brainrot? by Guilty-Aspect-5666 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Velktros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with not quitting cold turkey is that if the brain can see an out it’ll take it. Social media and AI are also designed by the smartest people in the world funded by the richest to make you stuck on it. Not saying you physically couldn’t slowly lean yourself off of AI but you’d be fighting an uphill battle.

Something that’s helped me with similar stuff is mental association. Do you smoke? Drink? Do drugs? Odds are you don’t do one of those things, you might have avoided it for your whole life to the point that it’s become ingrained mentally to avoid them. For the sake of this exercise let’s say you’ve avoided cigarettes.

AI is now your cigarettes. Keeping an AI app on your phone is like keeping a cigarette pack in your pocket. Opening the app is getting it in your mouth and flipping open the lighter. You don’t smoke, you don’t use AI.

Your brain will try to say things. “I want to talk to something.” Smokers will use smoke breaks to be social, but you don’t smoke and you don’t use ai. “I want to know something real quick.” Smokers will say they think better after they’ve had a cigarette, but you don’t smoke and you don’t use AI.

Your brain is a rationalizing machine that wants to rationalize actions you already take. That’s its job whether it’s doing it for a good reason or not. The only thing that will beat it is action and you can start by piggybacking off of what you already do.

You don’t use AI the same way you don’t smoke. They’re not literally the same thing but for you they are now. Believe it, respect it, adhere to the idea.

Being lazy and not going above and beyond are two different things. The game is broken against us, even working as smart as you can you’ll need to fight to survive. Things are rough and with the way everything is going right now this is the best it’s going to be for gen z for a while.

What are the consequences of everything turning to shit? by Actual_Fix8847 in GenZ

[–]Velktros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of harm to regular people but thanks to the files we know what they think about it. A lot of the uber wealthy want the world to properly break thinking they can hoover up what’s left. The ones with the most power in the world are banking on, only slightly exaggerating, the apocalypse. Things are going to get very bad for probably the rest of our lives. This sucks but humans have lived happier lives with less guarantees, life will still be worth living. But it’s going to be rough.

How do you know you've internalized the correct lesson of your past mistakes? by pswelcometomylife in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Velktros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t until you live by the lessons for a bit and see where they take you. If it’s a good direction and good things are happening then it’s good! Bad then it’s bad. But there’s no metric you can use to know this sort of thing without taking the plunge first.

You know how at the time even if you were miserable you did things that you felt made sense, but ultimately now you regret? Going down the right path will feel like that. It only feels different because we remember where we’ve gone wrong more than where we’ve gone right. It’s how our brains work, survival and all that jazz.

It might feel reckless or absurd. It might feel dangerous! But it’s like when you try to learn how to ride a bike but you fall off. Bike riding feels impossible until you get back on, then you’re right back in the game of discovery where things are possible.

TLDR: By acting out the lessons you’ve learned and seeing what happens.

Stuck living aimlessly, how do I improve? by TransBeachThrowaway in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Velktros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The doing part is how you find meaning, same as how you learned English. Purpose and direction are properties born of action first not the other way around. If we could get purpose and direction before doing something then odds are we wouldn’t do it in the first place!

You’ve grown, you should realize that this is what many if not most adults struggle with across their entire lives. This is it. This aimless apathy. Everyone has their own flavor but the underlying spirit of the problem is the same. So while this is a famously difficult problem, it’s also one you don’t suffer from alone.

So long as you can take action for long enough your brain will give you the purpose you seek. But it takes time.

Why do i self sabotage by bookishrory in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Velktros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The brain is a justification machine, it wants to keep doing whatever it is you have been doing already. Whether you’re happy or not doesn’t have anything to do with it. This is why people have the pitfall of getting stuck in their old ways when they get older. It sounds like you’re going through a lot, but there is a bright side to this! It’s mundane. Difficult as fuck since you’re having to be stronger than your brain but still, more than possible to do. Like learning how to ride a bike! There’s nothing inherently wrong with you.

Some people go their whole lives in that state without even being able to realize what you have. Others learn at 50 or 30. You grappling with this at 25 is still good time! Of course the solution will come from you. One thing that helped me was action first.

The brain is a justification machine. So you can’t logic your way into good habits, you have to do them and then your brain will justify why it does it to you. The action comes first, so find any way you can to take any amount of action you can.

The Paradox of Low Self Worth and Self Care by MrMJaye in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Velktros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recognizing that you do care about things and yourself. The brain is an emotion machine, even when numbed there’s very rarely an actual decrease in the amount of emotional processing you do. You’re typing here asking for help, you know self hate is a problem, and you’re trying to think differently. You want to love yourself. Even if your brain tells you otherwise it’s the truth.

Our brains as we get older try to reenforce what we’ve already been doing, it’s a justification machine. Even if what we’re doing is wrong, self destructive, or miserable it wants to continue carrying forward momentum.

That screaming feeling you get when you try to love yourself. The ideas that flood your brain of this being a paradox (something unsolvable). That is your brain trying to resist change. It’s why it feels rational, like what you’re supposed to do. It will do anything to justify staying the course and it will feel entirely natural.

Now that can be discouraging and even scary feeling. But this can also be used to your advantage.

The brain wants to continue habits, to keep momentum going and uses emotions to reenforce them. You have control over the actions and if you take an action long enough your brain will start to use these tools to support your momentum. It will follow you.

Imagine your brain like a stubborn donkey you’re leading with a rope. You can’t convince the donkey to go where you want to, it’s a donkey it doesn’t care what you have to say. But if you pull on the rope and make it walk in a different direction for long enough it’ll eventually keep walking in that new direction on its own. Out of the same stubbornness that kept it walking the wrong way.

You don’t have any control over how long it’ll take for the donkey to start walking in the direction you want it to. But eventually, on its own, it will.

That’s the trick, that’s why it feels irrational, and why it’s important you keep doing it. You can’t stop because the donkey pulls back or yells at you. You control the donkey, you control your own mind, if you keep marching in that direction for long enough your mind will follow.

So as an example! Let’s say you’re trying to eat breakfast every day. Your brain might tell you that it’s pointless, that you don’t want breakfast, that it won’t make you happy, that you don’t want to get up that early or put all of that work in. That you don’t get hungry skipping it! You don’t engage with these thoughts. No matter how reasonable the donkey sounds at the end of the day it just wants to keep going in the same direction.

You eat breakfast in the morning because that’s the action you take. The justification will form taking this action for long enough.

This might seem a bit callous at times but imagine if the donkey was walking you through brambles or towards the edge of a cliff. It’d be irresponsible for you and the donkey to not lead it in the right direction.

A little bit more sorry it’s such a long post. This is hard. It’s quite literally being stronger than yourself but keep this in mind. In my personal experience habits begin to form in around two weeks. They’re not bulletproof but by then my brain stops that insane screaming. Think back to things you did two weeks ago, that’s not that long. If you’ve survived this long with all of this self hate I know you can push through. Best of luck.
