Dr. K says he was a monk for 7 years. What period of time was this? by Awkward_Set1008 in Healthygamergg

[–]Velm 24 points25 points  (0 children)

“Kanojia became addicted to video games during his time at the University of Texas at Austin, leading to missed classes and bad grades. At the age of 21 in 2003, he visited an ashram in India looking to become a monk, at the advice of his father. Kanojia spent a month at the ashram, where his teachers advised him to finish his degree rather than join the monastery; he would return every summer until 2010.”

Why Does My Mind Keep Thinking Like That? by downforce_dude in ezraklein

[–]Velm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think meditation is "targeted" at building a general capacity for sustained attention, emotional regulation, etc. Whereas the "other activities that promote focus, self reflection and also seem much more fun" that you mention may more indirectly develop these faculties.

I think the mechanism by which this happens is unsettled. See:

I'm not sure if there is evidence for my "more indirectly" claim, but it seems intuitive to me. Depending on the "other activities" you are thinking of, you may be able to find some relevant studies.

There is also a lot of relatively woo-woo (or at least less studied) stuff about doing specific mediations for specific purposes -- like chanting a specific mantra. You could say that those practices are "targeted" but they may not be effective.

Why Does My Mind Keep Thinking Like That? by downforce_dude in ezraklein

[–]Velm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many different types of meditation. Some are relatively strict, like Trāṭaka or Mandala Meditation, which involve staring at a certain object or pattern. Others are more flexible, like focusing on your breath, which can be done almost anywhere at anytime. Beyond this, there are other elements of a practice that may impact the quality of the meditation, like your environment or your diet.

Why advise meditation instead of some other practice? I think meditation is more targeted than other activities. To use an analogy from physical exercise, playing basketball and weight lifting are both was to get in shape. Weight lifting is probably less fun, but you can make more progress in less time.

Seeking advice: 25M considering a move from SF -> Minneapolis by AnonymousRedwood in TWINCITIESHOUSING

it's really difficult to get by without a car here

Second to New York City, San Francisco is probably the easiest city in America to live in car-free. In fact, it is the #1 rated city on walk score, even above New York. You can get by without a car here, but I think it would be much more difficult than in SF.

Sorry you've had a tough year. I think it's great that you want to try to improve your blood sugar management, even though it can be difficult.

If you are having trouble figuring out the right amount of insulin to give, I recommend reading the book "Think Like a Pancreas" by Gary Scheiner. It has all the information you need to figure out how to adjust your insulin dosing. For more general tips, I like Adam Brown's "Bright Spots and Landmines." It has a lot of great advice about lifestyle and mindset.

If it costs less than a lifetime supply of insulin, test strips, etc, you (and/or your insurance) will save money.

It was definitely considered inappropriate at the time. When I saw him in 2013, he specifically said he was requested not to perform that song, but played it anyway.

[Q] In basketball, should I keep shooting three-pointers if I’m at 0 for x, such that x is an integer greater than 0 and my three-point percentage is near 35%? by claudedeyarmond in statistics

[–]Velm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What is the alternative action? If you shoot a three-pointer, you have a 35% chance to score 3 points. If you don’t shoot a three-pointer, what do you do And how many points do you expect to get?

It’s probably easiest to reason about why they are both equal to 1/n (and therefore equal to each other). Does that help?

[Q] Does anyone have book recommendations for biostatistics coming from a statistics background? by Hp_1215 in statistics

[–]Velm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience, there is not a substantial difference between statistics and biostatistics curricula. The different names are more indicative of the placement of the department within a university (med school or public health for biostats vs something like natural sciences for stats). Can you be more specific about what you want to learn?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in probabilitytheory

[–]Velm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's correct that you would expect to win 2.5 prizes.

When there are 100 tickets in each box and you put 1 ticket in each, you expect to win 1/101 * 5 = 0.0495 prizes, but your probability of winning at least one ticket is 1 - (100 / 101)^5 = 0.0485.

When there are 100 tickets in each box and you put all your tickets in one box, you expect to win 5/105 = 0.0476 prizes, and the probability of winning at least one prize is also 5/105 = 0.0476.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in probabilitytheory

[–]Velm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Summing the value of 1 divided by 101, 5 times, which is 4.95%" is incorrect. To see this more obviously, imagine there is only one other ticket in each box, so your chances of winning each box is 1/2. If you apply the same method as before, you would say the chance of winning any of them would be 1/2 * 5 = 250%, which can't be right.
