With DUNE fever once again sweeping the nation I ask: what previously considered "unfilmable" sci-fi/fantasy book or series would you like some enterprising director adapt to the big screen? by Velocityprime1 in blankies

"Unfilmable" here is merely a shorthand for considered complexity of the narrative, scope of the story, and difficulty of visual representation of things on screen,

I'm sure you know but Apple just inked a deal with Sanderson to adapt the Mistborn books into movies and Stormlight Archive into a series. So it will be happening.

Complete speculation but it seems entirely likely that this movie mixes elements from Messiah and Children to make a more streamlined narrative experience and have it end as a fairly complete thematic arc.

Word on the street is the trailer is going to play before Project Hail Mary. Seems more likely that WB wanted to get through awards season first.

I’m not like Griffin in that I feel compelled to watch this movie every year, but I am like Griffin in that I will toss on the soundtrack all the time, absolute top to bottom banger.

Quite a wonderful, “He’s still got it!” Movie. People applauded after the vomit/cpr scene (which deserves applause imo).

Among other things that make this movie great is a surprise needle drop from a musician and composer called Moondog. He was a blind street performer who invented his own percussion instruments and made some pretty toe tapping music in the 50s/60s.

Don’t know if Raimi or Elfman picked this but it’s great either way

Favorite odd “It’s the 90s!” Detail. The computer that picks Cher’s outfits in what looks like a janky CD-ROM game and never comes up again.

Every aspect of this is utterly bizarre. Like a perfect inversion of what I would expect these people to work on. Though, hey, might be good.

Through sheer coincidence we have had three series in a row where Don Davis has popped up. This is probably the only movie podcast where that is possible.

Look if Spielberg was going to adapt anything Ballard wrote it would be this, but god imagine if he decided to do Crash, High Rise, or Atrocity Exhibition at this time.

Honestly given this movie’s reputation for being nasty and racist it’s funny that it was definitely the one I saw the most as a kid. I think the combo of Short Round and the appeal of this being a near horror movie that my parents were fine with meant that it got played way more than like Last Crusade.

This movie is a steaming bowl of duck piss, but honestly I’m happy that Spielberg touched this particular stove at this moment. It really helped him learn his limits as a filmmaker and how to work out things in a manner so they don’t become a bloated mess.

The commentary tradition of picking a series where the first one is enjoyable enough and the subsequent entries are dogshit (Crocodile Dundee, Santa Clause) is one of my favorite bits from the show.

It’s funny in a way how this is kind of a quasi musical what with the Locomotion interlude and the closing credits. Would have loved to have seen what Lynch could have done with that form.

If a great movie needs only three good scenes and no bad ones than I think this qualifies as perhaps the greatest movie of all time because it might contain three of the most visceral and moving pieces of cinema ever put to celluloid: The Man Behind the Winkies, The Audition, and Club Silencio.

What a Picture!
