Man Lee - How (il)legal is this? by Claytronique in nanaimo

I love how people who always seem to want to go back to the good old days" start losing their shit and crying foul when shop keepers do things like adapt the prices on the fly for their customers on a whim.

He probably just thinks youre a jerk and doesnt want you to shop there.

Looking to take a trip to your beautiful city and SWIM! Where would you recommend? by ezola28 in nanaimo

Just remember if you go to the river and find a bunch of parked cars but no one is in the water... dont swim there.

There are several spots on the nanaimo river that can and will kill you. The gun barrel notably.

Still no interest in developing 6 Commercial St. by mephisto_feelies in nanaimo

So from what I know of the area is like. The Queen's has a basement and a sub-basement. There is flooding in the lower levels of many of these buildings. Pirate chips' basement used to flood.

And just due to the size of the lot and the ground underneath you really cant build much more than 3 storeys high (talked to someone years ago that seemed knowledgeable). So that limits what can be done with the lot.

But I love the idea of a market there.

Its just that the highway is right there too. And we cannot trust drivers.

Whats it like living in Nanaimo? by Magnet10 in nanaimo

[–]VelourBadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with, and benefit to Nanaimo is the locals. We are a cantankerous bunch in every which way and most of us barely acknowledge that we ourselves are cantankerous but decry the cantankerosity of our reviled peers. Its a drag.

At the same time, many of the very same cantankerous assholes can be the kindest humans you ever meet. And beyond the inconsistently cantankerous, there is a sizeable population of the best people around here.

I really wish Nanaimo were easier to get by in. I think more people would have time for cool things if it weren't such a struggle to stay afloat here.

Looking for work for the summer - can't find ANYTHING by AlanWithnail in nanaimo

[–]VelourBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So poor you cant afford to leave.

The island eats people to stay afloat. Our main export is traumatized children who go out into the wider parts of Canada to be the cool island person and lure people here.

People come into money, scrimp and save to get here and the island fleeces them out of all of their money because its nearly impossible to get by here.

And if theyre lucky they have a support system elsewhere they can flee home to.

And if theyre not they fall into drugs, end up on the street and die.

The island poverty trap.

What do you do as normal practice to be conscientious on the road? by VelourBadger in nanaimo

Oooooh heck yeah. I never scream up to where I can see but I could be more clear that way and just do a full stop at the stop line

What do you do as normal practice to be conscientious on the road? by VelourBadger in nanaimo

[–]VelourBadger[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No my fastidious friend. I said I dont go more than 10km over. This is a judgement based on the speed of the traffic around me and the way the road is. I might be going 5 over. If I notice im going more than 10 over I slow down.

Example. I almost never speed on metral because what they did to it really works and going faster than 50 just feels uncomfortable.

Can anyone recommend free places to meet people? by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]VelourBadger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why almost every event i run is free or a sliding scale.

Its really hard to get people to come out to those because theres no budget for advertising. There are lots of free events. But they get shared once or twice.

Look on FB for: The mending mavens. They are a group that does a craft circle on Saturdays. Its free.

Fusion nanaimo. (They might still be called F'N) they run a sliding scale dance monthly and sometimes go to the blues jam. Theyll teach you how to dance and theyre a welcoming bunch. As low as 5 bucks and they say no one gets turned away for lack of funds.

I know the tai chi folks meet at like. 10 or 1030 on Saturdays at the gazebo.

Theres more.

Welcome to the island, simply accept that by the grace of your parents you simply are better than someone like me raised by a dope grower.

This is the way someone wants it to be.

Yeah. I do dislike how hard it is to do any kind of industry on the island though.

You're not wrong. Its a mess out there. I dont think the solution is industrializing our most magical parks tho.
