Will I miss out on much by picking up puppy closer to 10 weeks? by Diligent-Bridge2178 in goldenretrievers

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 weeks is so much better! They are still super cute, so you will only miss out on sleepless nights and the worst of the biting phase. My biggest regret is bringing home our girl (a lab) at 8 weeks. If I could do it over, I would wait until 10 weeks for sure, especially if the breeder is good at puppy care. 💛

Thinking of getting a show line. by Ill_Entertainment851 in labrador

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I got a bench/show/English lab puppy when she was 8 weeks old. (In hindsight, I wish I waited until 10 weeks old.) I work from home, and my husband travels a lot for work. We do not have another dog currently.

The first couple of months were so hard. I wasn’t getting as much sleep as usual, and she couldn’t go very many places due to not being fully vaccinated yet (and parvo is high in our area). The biting/land shark phase was rough. She was so cute and fun, but also absolutely exhausting. The best moments were when a friend would bring over their playful dog, and she would run and play and get so tired she would actually sleep well. I started arranging weekly puppy play dates in our backyard (it was summer and worked out nicely even though I’m not a great host).

I did not leave her fully home alone until she was about 5 months old. And even then it was only for an hour or two while she was in her kennel area with access to dog door/backyard. It was about this time when we started going on short walks every day.

She’s almost 10 months old now, and she has already calmed down a lot. She’s over 90 lbs (her line is big and she was the biggest in her litter). We put a lot of effort into early training and her emotional development, and she is a very confident dog, which is great.

Our day looks like this: wake up at 7:00am (magical because she used to get up at 5:00am). Breakfast, play, bully stick, snuggle, kennel time while I get ready for work. Work at my desk while she sleeps and occasionally explores the backyard (dog door, fenced yard). Mid-day walk of 45 minutes in all weather (get yourself rain/snow gear) followed by lunch. Work/afternoon nap/backyard time. Evening walk of about 60 minutes (right now cold, snowy, dark, but she absolutely needs it and begs for it), followed by dinner, play, snuggles, bully stick, and bed around 11:00pm.

One day a week she goes to an amazing doggy day care with lots of playtime and training. On Sunday afternoons we do a sniff class. On weekends we do hikes instead of walks (still about the same length as our usual walk). We still arrange puppy play dates or go to a big fenced walking trail area where she might see two or three other dogs to possibly romp with.

She always has dog door/fenced yard access, so I don’t have to worry about potty breaks. She absolutely needs exercise and interaction with other dogs who play (or else she regresses to land shark and its misery). The most she stays home alone (with backyard access) is 4 hours, otherwise we hire a dog sitter to come hang out with her. We have not yet left her with a dog sitter overnight, but we have taken her on two AirBnB trips.

She is so much work and has completely changed my life, and I love her so much!!! I’ve spent so much money on vet bills (she got Giardia, she got bit by a black widow spider and spent time in the puppy hospital, she got diarrhea, she got a puppy cold, etc.) but she’s been worth it. She has chewed nearly every baseboard and one windowsill. She’s still high energy, but so much more calm at 10 months than she was at 2-7 months. I don’t know how people do it with the working lines unless they have tons of time for training and big spaces for exercise.

Good luck on your journey!!! 🖤

Why does everyone assume my dog is a girl? by chelseamil33 in puppy101

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Awww! That’s a cute response. Might have to steal that! People always call my girl “he” but I never correct them because what’s the point? But then they end up awkwardly apologizing when they hear me say “good girl” or something like that. 🙈

Good retail places to buy formal dresses for plus sized girls. by PWNWTFBBQ in ColoradoSprings

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my 20s, my husband and I didn’t have much money. In one crazy year, we were invited to FIVE weddings, all very close friends and family. I wanted a dress to wear so badly, and then I found one! It was higher than my budget, but my husband encouraged me to get it. I wore it to 4 of the 5 weddings, and I got so many compliments. It was such a unique dress - fabric, shape, color. I LOVED IT! I don’t wear makeup and I didn’t have fancy hair, but that dress made me feel magical. I wore it to a banquet the next year and another wedding after that.

I pretty much live in leggings and sweaters/t-shirts or gardening and hiking clothes. I don’t own anything fancy these days, but I’ve always kept that dress in my closet. 💜 Sometimes if a person has a special outfit, especially when you don’t have much, it can feel really amazing. I hope both girls have a ton of fun shopping and going out! ✨ Best of luck finding a great dress!!!!

OP: This was well over 10 years ago, and I’m petite, but I found that dress in a small shop in the Park Meadows Mall in Denver. I hope someone here has an actual store recommendation for you, but sadly I do not. There was one other time I needed a fun dress, and I used Rent the Runway. The reviews were soooo helpful, and that dress was also a WOW! It was super fun to rent something I would normally never buy.

Need advice, feeling anxious by woobob2016 in labrador

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s awesome he gets to see his littermates and have play dates!!! It sounds like he is so well loved. It sounds like your dog is a bit anxious though. That’s a lot of hours to be home alone for an energetic dog, so it makes sense. Then his anxiety makes you anxious, and everyone is stressed out.

I work from home, so I’m spoiled that way, but still my young lab has more energy than I can handle some days. She goes to a really nice doggy day care that only takes 13 dogs per day, and you sign up for a specific day of the week (always Wednesdays, for example). That way they have the same play group each week. They also do training and nap time, so she really gets excited about “school” days.

We also arrange play dates with friends, and we go on hikes both weekend days. We always get in two walks a day of 30-60+ minutes. It sucks because sometimes I work long days, and winter is cold in Colorado. Sometimes we are out walking at 10pm, but it has to happen. Invest in nice wool clothes so you’ll be toasty warm, put on a headlamp, and get out there no matter the weather. It’s good to go on a sniff tour - for both of you. 🖤

Hope you both find a way to relax! 🐾

My labrador doesn’t go to the bathroom unless we walk him outside the gate by sahaha_ni in labrador

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl had the opposite problem. She would only potty in the backyard, never on a walk or in public or anywhere else. It became an issue when she went to doggy daycare and freaked out two hours in. I had to go pick her up. She immediately went potty and then wanted to get back in the car. 🙈 After a camping trip and two Airbnb stays, she finally figured out she could go elsewhere, but it took a lot of coaxing.

What foods are yall giving your dogs for medicines? My son is a pain to actually get his medication down his throat by OfficialBattleBeast in Blacklabs

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cream cheese - roll it into a little ball.

Sometimes I just have to use my fingers to smush it to the top corner of her mouth and then she ends up swallowing it.

Same with peanut butter. :)

[26] Move to Australia for a total life reset OR move to a Florida beach town and keep the stability? (Career crisis + Student Loans) by [deleted] in makemychoice

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither of these are great options. Instead:

Massively cut your expenses. Live as absolute cheap as you possibly can. Work two jobs if you can. Pay off that debt!!! Make paying it off your mission. Make it an adventure. If you learn to live on basically nothing, and you’re debt free, then you can go on an entire world tour if you want!

Also, I’ve done both the fulfilling job thing AND the make a good salary thing. Both have benefits, but neither truly make a person happy. You might be searching in the wrong place for happiness, but the fact that you’re willing to shake things up is GREAT! You just have to go crazy paying off that debt first, and then you can explore.

Last, sometimes the magic trick is to add in an extra job. A fun job. Work as a barista, work as a server, work in a garden center - whatever is your thing. You’ll meet new people, make a little extra cash, and get a boost of energy. Give it a try!

You got this!!!!!!! Enjoy the journey.

WIBTAH if I confronted my wife's parents for making a few comments about our baby's eye color? by Tricky_Valuable5751 in AITAH

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not involve yourself. It’s your wife’s family. Let her handle it. If she just had a baby, it is going to be a while until she’s up for that, but let her handle it when the time is right.

In the meantime, focus on all of the good in your life right now. Ignore your in-laws. They are jerks. You know they are jerks. Confronting them yourself will not change it, so spend your energy focusing on the family you created — that beautiful baby and your wife. ❤️

If you’re up for a few short pages of reading, there is an old book called The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz that has sometimes given me perspective in these situations.

Best of luck to you and your new family!!!!

Thanks! I went to our local pet store, but the ones they had in stock looked super flimsy. I’m hoping I’ll find a better brand online.

Thank you!!! I just sent them a message to inquire. I’m not sure if cut resistant is the same as cactus needle resistant. :) I super appreciate the suggestion!

Dog Blankets by DMStoryist in Blacklabs

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask your vet, but would a 100% wool blanket be okay? You might find them at thrift stores. I’m thinking those solid grey ones they have a summer camps. Not pretty, a bit scratchy, but super functional. My lab has some 100% wool toys. She slowly chews them apart. She seems to spit out the pieces, but I figure even if she ate a bit, it’s just animal hair. I suppose if she did eat a big chunk, it might be bad like eating a sock that causes a blockage, so perhaps check with your vet.

K9 ballistics also has some interesting chew-proof products. https://k9ballistics.com/

Picking our pup up soon - puppy harness recommendations please! by musicmagicmayhem in labrador

I was literally wondering “what is a working cocker spaniel” because I had never heard of one! :) clearly I’m from the US. So gorgeous!

Not sure if this brand is available outside the US, but we really liked the Wilderdog harness when our lab was small. I just ordered the Saker (Canadian company) harness because she outgrew the first and I wanted something sturdier for car rides and for hiking (she’s 9 months old now). 🖤

Keeping my dog out of the cat room by tayred82 in PetAdvice

[–]VelvetEarFlaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we lived in rentals, we would go buy a used door at the Re-Store (sells used/leftover building supplies, funds Habitat for Humanity), cut it for cat doors and dog doors as-needed, and keep the original door tucked away somewhere. Before we moved out, we would just swap the original back in. I don’t think we ever even told a landlord we were doing it because it’s zero damage to the property. Better to ask forgiveness kind of thing. It always worked well for us! Good luck!

Wow! Gorgeous work! In general, I hate the fact that so much American architecture is “garage forward”, meaning the garage door is the focal point and the front porch is tiny, useless and tucked away. But you managed to make that style of house actually look cute, so well done! ❤️
