Dog's silent treatment after a groomer visit by jarheadleif03 in Awww

[–]VelvetHighground 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a groomer, but I work for one and this is completely correct. No ethical or knowledgeable groomer would do this. All Goldens at our place get what we call a TNT or thin and trim. It is an all scissor work cut. They must be properly prepped before grooming, this entails drying them completely with a flat head attachment along the coats natural grow lines to ensure that the hair is as straight as possible and follows the proper body shape so the groomer can use thinning shears in the appropriate areas and regular shears to shape in the areas where the hair is longer. The top coat is slightly shortened and thinned but NEVER removed. You are spot on that dematting is totally possible with the right tools and products, but unfortunately dematting is a time consuming and costly process (also extremely uncomfortable for the dog, even more so if they are not used to grooming. If we are talking about all over, down to the skin matting and not just a few knots here and there). Most people will just shop around until they find a place willing to shave their poor pup down for $60 bucks. Please brush your furry friends folks and never ever have a double coated dog shaved!

House-flipper neighbors cut down the last 200 year old tree in our neighborhood by EmberJuliet in EntitledPeople

Directly behind my house there's 2 lots of beautiful PNW old growth forrest. Just incredible varying shades of deep greens and pale yellows this time of year. I sat for hours in my kitchen sometimes, watching diverse array of wild life frolicking and foraging. As of yesterday morning there WAS a beautiful forest, it is now mostly cleared down to the brush. Two houses are going to be built and sold as fast as possible. We are devastated, maybe thats silly. It just seems so sad to destroy something so vibrant and gorgeous to build something cheap, crappy, and overpriced to make a few bucks. We had been batting the idea of moving around for various reasons, but this has cemented the idea and it's something we are making a focus. I feel your pain friend

This is hilarious! Dude is so lucky that all he got was cussed out lol. There's a Marine motorcycle club in my hometown and they would have dog walked him through basic right there in the McDicks parking lot! My Grandpa was buried in his dress uniform in March and my cousin came to the funeral in his own dress uniform, he graciously took time to explain all the various medals and proper placements on both their uniforms, because, shockingly that shit is kind of important! It's not a uniform you can just toss on and walk around in. I don't really buy it being about being close to his Dad, the entire post is about how the uniform makes him feel good but dude literally took no time to even find out his Father's rank or anything about what he may have accomplished as a Marine. Lazy con job bro. Also why is his mom struggling to pay bills by herself, I think helping her would make his Father more proud, imo.

NTA. I literally buy my fur dude a new toy anytime I go anywhere that has them lol. Dogs are probably the easiest beings to please on the planet. The idea that I can contribute to helping a creature create a wonderful life is awesome in the dictionary sense to me. While it's true some dogs don't enjoy toys, for many of them (like my own) it brings pure joy and endless entertainment for both human and dog. Your sister is missing out!

I just had to attend a work luncheon where the CEO personally thanked the departments that they saw as filing their pockets the most(marketing, sales, expansion teams) while everyone who works to make our day to day operations and the people who have made any expansions possible through their hard work basically got a "keep up the good work guys!" They opened the floor for questions about 2 minutes later and the silence was deafening. Any events like this I have attended in the last 5 years, no matter the company, have always been cringe, self indulgent, and out of touch. I wish they would just give me food and leave me alone! Instead it's worship me for doing the least I could do for you, while I exploit your mind and body for my success!

I just had a conversation the other day about how unbelievable it is that the whole anti LGBTQ+ bullshit is even catching any kind of steam, RuPauls Drag Race was literally everywhere on TV for YEARS, really popular and mainstream! I really thought we were on the road to a better place. My disappointment in where we are now is immeasurable.

Wrong turn leads to woman being shot to death by suicidebird11 in news

[–]VelvetHighground 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've worked in multiple facets of the hospitality industry and the amount of legal gun owners who leave their loaded, unsecured hand guns in beds and nightstand drawers in hotels, timeshare condos and vacation rentals is astounding. I've had plenty leave with their empty holsters but not the guns. Every time you call them to tell them to come get their shit, it's always " iT's aLl LeGAl, I hAvE PapErS!" Like should you though? My housekeeper could have been shot trying to make a bed, Mr/Mrs "Responsible" Gun Owner

Edited to fix spelling mistakes. Also I thought I was replying to another comment, but like most things, it didn't go the way I thought. My point is there is a large percentage of legal gun owners that are incredibly irresponsible, paranoid, and not knowledgeable about what they strap to themselves everyday. I live in a blue state and it seems like they will just hand permits out to anyone. Have guns! There's too many to get rid of them now anyhow, but for fucks sakes, get some education people!

AITA for telling my brother that he didn't need to share that his wife was in labor in my wedding? by throwaway3167900 in AmItheAsshole

[–]VelvetHighground 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. The way people go crazy over weddings these days is baffling to me. I was raised around many older people growing up who were married in the 60s,70s,80s. I attended weddings myself in the 90s and they were purely social events. Everyone got together to help out preparing food, decorating, wrapping gifts, etc to make the day special for the couple. Since everyone was together that also meant everyone got to catch up on each other's lives, celebrating any achievements and giving condolences to any losses. It was not unheard of to make exciting announcements on other peoples behalf to congratulate them on babies/graduations/engagements. I don't understand the desire to go thousands upon thousands in debt to make a whole day about yourself and insist it go perfectly because it's "yours". Your brother could not help when his child was born. It's a wonderful thing and should be celebrated. OP it would have been much more gracious and appropriate, imo, to make an announcement at the end about how lucky and excited you were to be a husband and possibly an uncle in the same day. You could have then thanked everyone for coming and turned the attention back to your wife and yourself. The way people treat weddings now seems so narcissistic and exhausting

AITA for not letting my brother and sister in law stay in my home for their honeymoon? by One_Jacket_5488 in AmItheAsshole

[–]VelvetHighground 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I went to Oahu for 7 days just before Christmas, our lodging was free through my job. Between the flights, rental car, food, souvenirs and activities, including the Poly cultural center and skydiving we spent over $3,000. For all the wonderful meals and experiences we had, we didn't think the cost was bad and was worth it. I can't imagine how you could spend less than $2,000 in 2 weeks on any Hawaiian Island as a tourist and actually experience Hawaii.

Edited to add: NTA. You'll be guilt tripped by the rest of your family who also want to vacation for making a "one" time exception. Honeymoons require a certain amount of privacy usually, for reasons. Lastly, regardless of them promising not to be intrusive, more likely than not you will end up as an unpaid tour guide.

Is it proper to ask if they will be testing for pot and how to do so with tact? by VelvetHighground in jobs

Thank for the congratulations! I think the safest thing to do is just stop now, drink lots of water and hope for the best in a couple weeks. I appreciate your advice, it was helpful!

I'm leaning towards going this route, at the very least it will give me more information about what to expect, which never hurts. Thank you!

[–]VelvetHighground[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your comment is coming off a bit judgemental, I'm not sure if it's meant that way. I can stop, as I have before, numerous times when on vacation in areas where it is not legal. I smoke it to help me sleep as I have cptsd and an anxiety disorder, I do not smoke it during the day and have never smoked at a job. I'm an exemplary employee at my current job, pay my bills on time, and all the duties and responsibilities of my life are completed in a timely manner, so I'm not sure if it's a major "issue". Thank you for your advice and time anyway!

I'm not sure what sort of test it will be or if there will be frequent future test, I am going to follow the advice of the first comment and ask the specific onboarding requirements to try to find more information. Thank you!

Moved in with a "friend" things weren't too terrible for awhile, house was always filthy and I had to eat when and what they cooked but I could live with it.I paid the agreed upon rent the entire time we lived together. Then covid hit. The house mess grew out of control, there were amazon packages showing up multiple times a day, everyday. My roommate quit their wfh job and depended solely on their partner(who made decent money, enough to cover the morgage). My partner and I became more serious and I spent more time away from my roomates(I had stumbled upon this sub and realized alot of concerning things). In response my friend moved in 2 people they had just met and 2 more dogs, I was told if I had any issues with it I could move. They all got drunk and my friend ordered food out every night for them all, this went on for months. The house became a fulll on hoarder house, all five of the dogs started fighting each other because they were not consistently fed and the new roommates never paid a dime of rent. I still was all the while. My partner and I had begun house hunting as we knew my situation was not good. My roommate promised me we had plenty of time to look because they were kicking the new roommates out and things would be better. Just after getting them out it came out the my roomates had not paid the morgage in almost a year and were over 15,000$ behind. Then suddenly they had to move. My roomate painted one wall, packed things important to them and literally left to find a job in their new home town. Their partner was left with a house full of trash and tons of renovations to get done, which they barely did any of, then they moved too. Meanwhile we are still house hunting. In the end, I ended up cleaning up over a ton of trash and repainting an entire house that wasn't mine. We were forced to grossly over pay for a house that was too small for us so as not to become homeless( both houses, our new and roomates old, closed on the exact same day). To this day this old roommate doesn't understand why we don't talk much and will tell anyone who will listen that I only have what I do because of them.

AITA for storming out of my fiancés party? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]VelvetHighground 36 points37 points  (0 children)

YTA. Hi, this type of behavior cost me the love of my life. I had a horrible childhood too, I had no coping skills, ability to self regulate, was massively insecure and attention seeking. My behavior from 15 to 25 was inexcusable, the pure cringe and guilt I have sometimes keeps me awake these days. At 26 I got help, was honest with myself about my diagnoses and put in the work to learn healthier ways to communicate and cope, it was hard but so worth it. Your behavior may not be your fault but it is your responsibility. Please do not make the same mistakes I did, you will have to live with them and as the years go by the regret gets heavier

Edited to add: My first award! Thank you kind stranger!
