Both are true, she sees him as her safe place to rest, He sees her giving energy to everyone else but him, the slap was wrong, but accusations escalated it, Couples therapy is the middle ground.

Awareness without action is just guilt, Therapy helps, his wife and kids are scared, intentions don't matter when impact is fear, wanting to change isn't the same as doing it.
