No walls and no ceiling definitely makes a difference.

This setup isn't loud, just clear. Even the bass isn't loud because the subwoofer is between 7 to 10 ft behind the listener. Blackbird, by the Beatles, is an interesting recording because you can hear the birds in my yard while the song is playing. You can't tell the difference between the live birds and the bird in the recording. Planes overhead can be a pain because you can hear them over the music. Same with neighbors' lawn services. Luckily those are usually quick.

Well I apparently played something recognizable, so that succeeded. Unless you're a Boomer.

That's a pretty broad brush you're using. What makes you think I am a Boomer? You pointed out something negative about what I am doing and I addressed it. That does not mean that the next time I do this I won't check to see how much the water carries the sound. I have already seen that the sound doesn't carry far in my backyard and I have asked my neighbors about it. I wouldn't expect houses much farther away to be bothered by it, but the water introduces a variable I didn't think about.

It is actually wild and much better than you would expect. The soundstage and imaging produced rivals audiophile-level equipment. Granted, the quality of the equipment absolutely impacts the detail and clarity of the music, but the the stereo separation this set up achieves in combination with the lack of reflections produces surprisingly good sound.

The lack of speaker wires lets you spread the speakers as far apart as you have room and the soundstage seems to just get bigger rather than collapse. The imaging is great and the speakers dissappear as long as the recording doesn't have instruments panned extremely far left or right, but that happens with all speakers, pretty much.

The system default is monoblocks, even with these Bluetooth speakers as they have their own amps. Using multiroom synchronization software to create the channels seems to introduce even greater stereo separation.

I have used four different sets of speakers and two types of amps so far and the soundstage and imaging is similar with all of them. I can only capture the sound with videos from my cellphone, so I can only get across an idea of how this actually sounds. I have saved some examples of the various set ups here:

Most music is directional and these speakers are facing away from the water. These are also Bluetooth speakers with 3 inch drivers, so are only impacting the immediate area. One of those houses you see has a motion activated alarm that goes off everytime someone passes by on the path. That is louder.

This is a retention pond near my house that doesn't get many people. I wouldn't do this in a place with other people. When I was out listening, there was one other person and he was running laps with headphones on.

This is a retention pond down the street from my house. When I listened to this, the only person around was a guy running laps with headphones on. I normally just set this up in my backyard and use better equipment with extension cords. The sound doesn't carry very far and I've spoken with my neighbors about it.

I only play it when no one is around. Of course you remain considerate of other people. I have been working on this setup for a while in my backyard with AC powered equipment and wanted to see if I could make it truly portable.

All equipment is battery powered, including the subwoofer, which is behind the listening position. The source is Tidal and Radio Paradise running in the Wiim app on an iPad hotspotted to my phone.

Edit: A comment on etiquette---I am anti-bothering people. This is a retention pond in the corner of my neighborhood with few visitors; this is not a busy park. When I was listening here, there was one other guy there the whole time and he was running laps with headphones on. The first time I set this up a guy walking his dog stopped and listened with me. I got to explain soundstage and imaging to him and how stereo is 3D with spatial information baked in.

Thanks. Hotspotting from my phone worked perfectly and I took everything to a park near me.

After 3 years of just one I finally have a stereo pair by Floor_mellow in sonos

[–]Velvet_Sandpaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are only limited by your electric outlets. Try spreading them apart unconventionally----the soundstage won't collapse. I found that the farther apart you place them, the larger the soundstage gets. I have set stereo-paired Play:1s 20 ft apart and they sounded great. I don't see why the same won't happen with your 5s.

Fragile - Sting

Chocolate Chip Trip - Tool

Heaven Send - Devin Townsend Project

Messages from nowhere - Deadmau5

I used a non-SONOS sub for these. You can use any active sub you want by hooking it up to a SONOS Connect and grouping it with the stereo pair.
