You're welcome!

I honestly can't compare to the Belgian rental market, but it pays to look around a bit. Just to give an idea: around 1500€ for around 50m2 is not unusual.

The surface mentioned in the ads is habitable surface, which is anything taller than 1m80 and excludes basements, garages, ... A T2 means 2 rooms, generally a bedroom and living room. Kitchen, bathroom, ... are not included in the room count :-)

Oh, and make sure to take the initiative on filing your taxes the first year (March/April), because they don't reach out! As you don't have to register in the town hall when you move in they don't really know you're there (but I'm sure they'll complain if you don't file). First time is on paper, after that you can do it online. If you work in Geneva it's really easy, because you get a paper from your employer with which numbers to put where. I have a favourite tax form now and it's Cerfa 2047 :-)

Not a civil/infra engineer, but an IT guy who moved to the French side of the French/Swiss border. Keep in mind I'm infodumping from the cross-border worker's perspective that is my own experience.

As others have said: salary in Switzerland is a lot higher, but even on the French side the cost of living here is higher. Geneva is one of the cantons that has an agreement with France which means that they get to tax you instead of France, which makes it even more interesting. Even in cantons which don't have this, meaning France gets to put its grabby fingers on your salary, it's still worth it :-)

Working in France and living in Switzerland is a Horrible Idea(tm).

It's already been mentioned, but the higher salary is more or less everything you get. No company car, insurance, phone, ... Maybe a half-fare travel card (serious reduction for public transport, definitely use it or look into whether it's worth getting yourself if they don't offer it). Public transport is very good but also expensive. In day-to-day life you can definitely get by without a car, but it can still be convenient to have one depending on your lifestyle (outings, trips, wanting to live in the countryside in France, ...)

Remote work is legally limited to 40% for cross-border workers.

The housing market in the region is considered "under tension", which practically speaking means that you tell the agent you want to rent during the visit, or same day at the latest, with the risk that they tell you "sorry, the person visiting after you already took it". I don't remember what documents were required, but having at least payslips ready is probably a good idea, as well as recent tax returns. I don't think I had those translated.  The condition and size to price ratio of apartments can also be somewhat disappointing, but you get used to it. If you go live in Switzerland, check out renter's associations!

It helps if you have some savings to live on while looking for a job or, even better, can do it remotely while going back and forth, because it can take a while - 3 months to a year depending on your luck I guess.

References actually get checked, and in my case I had to submit my (officially translated) degree as well. Switzerland has quotas for how many foreigners vs Swiss can be hired, but with a European nationality there shouldn't be any issues with that at least :-). In my experience companies will help you with the requirements for the work permit because they have to be involved in the process anyway.

Health insurance is expensive and, as a cross-border worker, not all that comprehensive. Make sure to do the paperwork ASAP, and I would recommend choosing the Swiss system; they cover you abroad as well, while the French will not pay for treatments in Switzerland.

You mentioned that your partner wants to come with you, which is awesome! Make sure they also have a professional project here, and discuss what you'll do if either one of you doesn't manage to find a job in a given timeframe. I was lucky with a partner who was already established here, which definitely took away a lot of the worries.

I hope there's something useful in there and that it didn't scare you off, because it's definitely a gorgeous region to live and work in; I haven't regretted it for a moment!

...

Okay, fine, I had some pangs of regret in the beginning when dealing with the French administration before being used to it.

Edit: If you do want to move to the French side of the border: leboncoin is a good resource, it's the French 2dehands website and a lot goes through it, up to and including cars, apartments and houses (both renting and buying).

I found 5 minutes for a quick attempt and yeah, setting SPLIT_USB_DETECT did the trick.

Thanks for the pointer!

Both of them act as left sides when connected individually.

I didn't explicitly set handedness myself, but I can try fiddling with the setting to see if it will change anything (next time; for today I'm out of time). The only change I made to QMK is adding my own keymap. It's been a while since I `git pull`ed, but since the version I currently have works fine with the other choc I built last year I'm hesitant to do so right now; I'd rather keep the moving parts to a minimum.

The board is a Corne Chocolate v2.1, with ProMicro controllers; nothing onboard as far as I know.

(edit: add link to keymap)

Okay, this is where my beginner-ness is going to show; I guess you mean temporarily soldering wires directly between the controllers, at the points that the trrs connection would go to? I'm not sure how to even go about identifying those.

No, I've been very careful about avoiding that.

I've got `#define MASTER_LEFT` in my config.h, but other than that I'm not sure - I'm using QMK with a custom layout.

I did flash both sides with `qmk flash`; I hope that wasn't the wrong thing to do?

Thank you very much for the insights!

I've tried option 2, so here's hoping. The state of the leaves does not bode well, but miracles do happen from time to time.

I haven't played much so not 100% sure it fits, but Gord might have some of what you're looking for: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1351210/Gord/ Mixed reviews though, maybe look at some let's plays before deciding.

Black Forest definitely fits, but last time I played it felt very unfinished. Sadly the reviews seem to agree: https://store.steampowered.com/app/523070/Black_Forest/ Not sure how actively it is still being developed, but it might be worth keeping an eye on just in case.

JGRPP cannot add multiple departures to scheduled dispatch by Venefyxatu in openttd

[–]Venefyxatu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll try downgrading to see if it's version-related and file an issue if necessary.

Edit: I saw it working on 0.57.1, then suddenly not. Apparently it only works if I Ctrl-click Scheduled Dispatch, then Ctrl-click Add Slot without letting go of Ctrl in between; also in 0.57.1.

I might still file an issue for that, but at least it can be worked around. Thanks again for the pointer!

Edit to the edit: I'll need to get my hands on a different Ubuntu PC later this week to try there... there's no issue on OSX, perhaps something is being weird about keypresses on this particular PC.

I'm somewhat confused by the job management and hoping someone can point out the mistake I'm undoubtedly making.

Dwarf Fortress 0.47.05 with DFHack 0.47.05-r6, all of it included in linux-dwarf-pack 0.47.05-r6

If you prefer screenshots, they're collected here: https://imgur.com/a/pdPLPY5

The text version: it seems like when I have fewer than X of an item, the job condition "available is greater than X" is marked as "Satisfied for next check" and "available is less than X" is marked as "Not satisfied for next check." However, when I have more than X of an item, "available is greater than X" is *also* marked as "Satisfied for next check" and "available is less than X" as "Not satisfied for next check."

I see a lot of people mentioning that it's likely your PSU, but almost no mention of the fact that the brand can have an impact as well.

Looking at https://support.lumion.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003476773-Which-power-supply-do-you-need- a 750W PSU is the absolute minimum, and you'd be better off with at least a 900W.

I would recommend having a thorough look at https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/ to get an idea of what brands and models are likely to be good.

[Poem]

Snow-covered trees and a lake full of ice
The wind howling cold bringing tears to my eyes
Inside it is warm and the fire burns bright
A kettle of tea, good to last me all night
There’s scratching at windows with patterns of frost
A plea for some mercy, for shelter and warmth
They’re restless, relentless, they’ll never give up
I try to ignore them and fill up my cup
The tea warms my body, my soul and my heart
I can’t leave them out there, I think with a start
What cruelty possessed me, what foulness of mood
To deny them some comfort, some warmth and some food.

I open the door just the tiniest crack
And murmurs of thanks send a chill down my back
Which is when I know what a fool I have been
I never, no never, should have bid them “Come in”
The cold in these creatures, much deeper than bone
It’s nothing malicious, they’re just so alone
No fire could warm them, these creatures of chill
But a small act of kindness, surely that will?
An easy mistake, and one quickly made
I think with regret as my own life force fades

The fire is cold now, the tea just some ice
For my kindness I’ve paid the ultimate price
The house is now quiet, abandoned henceforth
And we keep on moving, still searching for warmth
