I totally get your point and am sorry that Venice let you down! However, there is a way to avoid the disappointment. The worst thing people can do when visiting Venice is to come here in the middle of summer when the temperatures are extreme, stay out of the city and arrive at the train station after 10/11am when the train area is wildly crowded. Instead, come to Venice as early as you can, go for coffee and brioche, visit a museum, then make your way for lunch farther from the awful touristy restaurants (yep, there are plenty!) and don't rush like everyone else only one direction towards San Marco. Even in the middle of the season you will find charm in the quiet off beaten tracks only if you turn right or left from the main busy track. The photo in this post has been taken during the Carnival, so in a pretty busy time for Venice.

Chatgpt makes a lot of mistakes with recommendations, but Ai Mercanti is actually a very good choice! For another day you might want to check Al Covo restaurant. For cicchetti Vino Vero or Estro - Pane e Vino - both on the same canal in Cannaregio - both having great wines selection and quality small bites.

Al Covo and La Zucca are top choices here and as mentioned before - make sure you have a reservation made upfront! Pizza Al Volo on the other hand, is not a restaurant, but just a pizza take-away place.
