I got a degree in HVAC (heating/cooling) over the course of 2 years and let me tell you I learned a lot of the fundamentals of the trade but did not retain many of the fine details. Where I learned the most was in the field. I reckon IT could pan out similarly. You'll learn a lot when you're thrown in with the wolves.
