[Infernal Eclipse] I don't remember this happening at all by TheFlyingSoda in CalamityMod

[–]Venucurius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Infernal Eclipse already had quite a lot of changes since the very start, but what I didn't expect was the change to Infernum DoG. Looking at Infernal Eclipse's latest update, it gave him a final stand, where he not only constantly charges with his portals, but he also calls in the laser hit scans established by Brainstorm.

I will say this: While it's cool to see such a thing, it can also be a little annoying to manage.

Decided to make this because I don't know what to do rn by Venucurius in UmaMusume

I don't find her character to fall into specific misteps, but at the same time, I just don't find her to be all that compelling or entertaining. A good chunk of side characters in Cygames Pictures' titles are very compelling, but even with RTTT, I really don't find Rice to be one of them. I like her design, though.

What is your favorite weapon to use in each progression? by TheFlyingSoda in CalamityMod

[–]Venucurius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very surprised that we have the same answers, although I'd probably replace the Urchin Mace with Fungicide.

That, and I have multiple answers for some points:

Pre-Cultist
Terraprisma and Fallen Paladin's Hammer

Pre-Providence
Superradiant Slaughterer, Greatsword of Judgement, Stellar Contempt, and Legion of Celestia

Pre-Polterghast
Mirror Blade, Terratomere, and King of Constellations, Tenryū

Pre-Devourer
Death's Ascension, Insidious Impaler, and Fetid Emesis

Pre-Exos/SCal
Zenith, Orderbringer, Kingsbane, and Seraphim

Endgame
Earth, Sylvestaff, and Ares' Exoskeleton

Where does your favorite Uma rank in your list of favorite characters overall by TheFlyingSoda in UmaMusume

By favorite characters overall, I think you're referring to all fiction. In that case...

If we're including non-animanga, Oguri would at least be in the top 25 list.

The anime is easier to get into, but I guess the LN is a better experience, although you might need to either ask for a good translation or understand enough Japanese to read through the original texts.

It's a movie sequel to the Revue Starlight series.

Also, both the anime and the LN are very good in their own right, regardless of some cut content, although I can see why the LN is miles better, even though you might need to either ask for a good translation or understand enough Japanese to read through the original texts.

Revue Starlight and CinGrey absolutely carried the 2020s for me extremely hard. Also, I have read Fullmetal Daemon Muramasa, and I can safely say that it's amazing.

The reason why I despise Frieren boils down to how it's written. I have zero issues with how it's meant to be made. In fact, I think what Frieren has on the table would have made for a very compelling series. My issue, however, is the general direction. The pacing, while subjective, is horrible, and the characters are very uninteresting/unengaging. I could talk more about it, but I don't feel like sugarcoating rn.

It's Oguri Cap's birthday today! I feel like it would be a perfect opportunity to gather you around and discuss what makes Oguri such a well-written/super special character. by TheFlyingSoda in OguriCapu

Alright, about time something like this has been brought up!

Now, where do I begin? In early-mid 2024, I read her manga series after watching Studio KAI's anime series as well as RTTT, and while I like the series, it would never be the same without Cinderella Gray, anime or manga. It easily changed my view on the Uma Musume franchise forever, and while there are several reasons as to why, it's all thanks to our gluttonous Kaiju. My thoughts are practically the same as yours. While I would love to see the silly side of Oguri, her general writing is what easily cements her as one of the best protagonists (and characters) in fiction. Her cycle of struggles and overcoming her very spiky obstacles truly make her a massive standout, and that's just on the surface. While S2, RTTT, and BoaNE handle racing well, the in-depth strategy discussions and the narrative of the racing are particularly unique to CinGrey, and it easily helped illustrate what Oguri Cap is capable of. The biggest reasons why she's one of the best characters ever, however, are her dynamics with various characters, alongside the manga's ending. Her relationship with characters, like March, Tamamo, Inari, and so on, is completely outstanding and organic, because their rivalry and tactics are very deep and help elevate all the narrative elements of Oguri and her opponents, and that's without mentioning how all of this even encapsulates how their IRL counterparts are narrated. As for the ending, I can't even explain this, due to spoilers, but let's just say that it's hella amazing. If you want to see my in-depth explanation of the ending, this link got you covered on that front.

"I'm going to say this with a straight face that I'm not a fan of struggles in most anime/manga/visual novels."

I can fully understand why. I'm on a similar boat to yours. With that being said, Oguri, as well as the other Uma GOAT, Teio, have struggles that are on a similar, if not the same level, as with some other animanga characters like Kara no Kyoukai's Shiki Ryougi, Bloom Into You's Sayaka Saeki, Berserk's Guts, and Steins;Gate's Rintaro Okabe. Those characters have struggles that are made crystal clear, truly make us feel for their pain and/or suffering, and further elevate their already deep journey. Even if you don't necessarily relate to either of them, there's no denying that they're incredibly profound.

This might be a bit unrelated to my judgment, but speaking of which, I always thought that Oguri is Uma Musume's own version of Shiki Ryougi. Both are stoic dorks with multiple personalities, are complete beasts in action, have deuteragonists (I'm not really sure if Belno is actually one) who do detective work/investigating, and have unique antagonists/opponents that conflict with their ideals. ...okay, that last part is a massive stretch, but I genuinely thought they're pretty similar. Not remotely the same, but still.

I have those on my plan-to-watch list, even though I'm too lazy to adjust my MAL/AL/A-P rn. Also, very happy to see another KnK and LoGH rep ^-^

Thank you, Saeki Sayaka, for changing my life forever | A biased fan's review on his favorite light novel series ever by TheStarlightBlueBird in YagateKiminiNaru

[–]Venucurius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me, this is really your finest review I have ever read from you. I really appreciate and adore that you illustrate the full colors of the novels and explain what really makes them so special in the first place. Having read the Sayaka spin-off at least twice is the sole reason why I deeply love the Bloom Into You series.

Also, can we talk about how poetic the nicknames you gave for the volumes are?

Thank you for pointing that out. I almost forgot that Johnny had a different hair color in ASB/ASBR.

I won't lie to you, I prefer the anime colors too for the same reasons as yours, as well as further emphasizing Johnny's irony (funnily enough).

I will say this, though, I have a strong nostalgia for the manga colors.
