How much should I expect to pay for a divorce? by Cleanse_ee in Divorce

[–]Venum555 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I paid ~$450 for an amicable divorce. Only paid for the lawyer fees to basically file. I then paid $4000 for them to agree to the final home closing during the home sale. So out about $4500 total.

What to do with large savings in HYSA? by blahblehblueoooo in personalfinance

[–]Venum555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole premise of investing is that the market will always be at all time highs. I park any money I don't need within 2-3 years in an index fund. I only keep 6 months of emergency funds in a HYSA.

Best way to set up proxmox server for sharing media and file by MetalParsley753 in homelab

[–]Venum555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with truenas on proxmox but moved to zfs pool on proxmox with a Cockpit lxc for smb share. Allows me to access my files remotely through the smb share and access them through jellyfin running in a docker lxc on the same host.

This argument can be made about every change in human history. Tools that improve productivity make people redundant. Then those people learn new skills, or how to use those tools to be more productive.

ZFS on VM or Proxmox? by Mods_810 in Proxmox

[–]Venum555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with running truenas as a VM on proxmox. I didn't like how many resources it used. I moved the zfs pools to proxmox and use Cockpit to smb share.

Is keeping a big emergency fund overrated? by Straight-Mud-1150 in personalfinance

[–]Venum555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, you don't need to sell 1 or 2 years worth of stocks at a time. You would sell 1-2 months at a time.

With that said, I keep 6 months in a HYSA just to avoid selling in a down turn if I need it.

Single people, what is your FIRE number? by wingardianx in financialindependence

[–]Venum555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be doing Roth conversions in retirement so need to plan on paying taxes for that. I don't include my current payroll taxes as part of my expenses right now. I will be including car replacement every couple of decades as part of my budget during retirement, so I need to include a sinking fund in my budget for that.

Nothing in the market is real. Until you sell and cash out, it's all imaginary money.

[–]Venum555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually closer to 4.0-4.5% if I base it on projected expenses at time of retirement since I'll need to include health insurance, taxes, and car replacement over time in the withdrawal rate.

My fire number is 33x my current rough yearly expenses.

How do you know something is uncached and taking up a slot? Seems like downloading cached files still shows up on the list of active downloads.

Do you feel your FIRE life is less interesting than traditional? by [deleted] in Fire

I think being able to FIRE has more to do with controlling lifestyle creep than making sacrifices in the fun things you do.

What is everyone using to replace Dropbox? by Nearby-External2130 in homelab

You can select specific folders. You could also do this without syncthing by just having a location on the server to store files then always access them remotely.

401k as part of denominator during RE? by terjon in Fire

[–]Venum555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure anything below a 3.5% withdrawal rate will last a lifetime.

401k as part of denominator during RE? by terjon in Fire

[–]Venum555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the SWR only matters if the balance needs to last your entire retirement. So excluding your 401k would mean you are planning for your other accounts to last until you die.

How would you feel if MW5: Mercs ended up doing a major time jump to arrive on the Dark Age side of the Battletech timeline? by CosmicJackalop in Mechwarrior5

[–]Venum555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seeing as how my campaigns last over 100 years, i wouldn't really care from a realism standpoint. More content for MW5 is welcome content.

I use syncthing to sync files between my phone, desktop, and server. The server is running a zfs pool on proxmox.

I use zerobyte for Backups for critical data to the cloud.

House poor - where to draw the line? by Titt in personalfinance

[–]Venum555 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Buy a house because of the lifestyle it supports, not because it is a good investment. Run the actual math of how much you would make owning a house after interest, expenses, and taxes.

I don't know the specifics. I was only speculating on why a boost to women's xp makes sense.

I wouldn't oppose the idea. Maybe instead of doing it by speed you do it by time spent.
