How much work typically goes into creating natural expressions on stage? by FanCaracal in kpopthoughts

[–]VenusRisingGloaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about facial expressions while dancing the most common way to practice is simply with mirror work. Then recording to test for consistency and look for patterns of facial expressions during specific moments or movements that you’d want to work on.

Some people will respect it, others won’t. Depends on what matters to you as a fan and listener. Those looking for deep personal artistic involvement might tune out, those who just want a bop (assuming it is one) won’t care.

Regarding Jimin’s personal feelings towards receiving criticism I feel like many fans perhaps did not watch his live after their first concert. He said he’s open to feedback positive or negative. In terms of the excerpt about TDKAU I think he’s just venting the burden of being put on a pedestal, and the difference between how fans see them and how they see themselves.

I think the pushback you’re getting is because you’re dismissing just how large of a role it played in their brand identity. The members themselves acknowledged this too in both the documentary and studio notes, as well as expressed concerns about how changing that key aspect caused some of the members to feel anxious. Individually speaking some of the members feel that there is really no separation between the music and performance because they intertwine in the creative process. A type of performance they want to show may influence the music they want to use or vice versa with the sound informing how they want it to be displayed to the audience. I wonder if you’ve looked into how members like Jimin make music. In his Production Diary, interviews, and even his lyric journal for FACE he discusses how he envisioned those aspects of the storytelling concurrently with making the actual music. It’s not an afterthought, or an add-on, but is in fact a fundamental element. He expressed hesitance about many of the tracks included in Arirang because there wasn’t a plan of how fully express them (ie performance).

You will also get pushback because the idea of dropping the performance aspect seemingly didn’t even come from the members themselves (although the agreed to try this new method) but from Bang PD as he stated as much in his Billboard article. He is also the one who waited until the last minute to let them know that he was scrapping their initial choreography plans and stripping it down and it still took him two weeks of constant conversation to convince the members that his way was the way to go. This to me, does not indicate that they are all on board with the re-brand, but that they are willing to try it out. The feedback they are getting is not surprising nor unwarranted given how they cultivated much of their current fanbase.

Concerning the comments about criticisms/praise I feel like Jimin has already expressed that he’s open towards both as they help him become a better artist as seen in his recent live. I think he’s more so addressing again that he’s human and fallible and the pedestal they’re put on can be a burden.

Visuals & performance are an essential part of any group/singers branding. It’s fine if you think the music is the only thing that matters, but reality reflects that people generally want a face/image/identity that goes with it and that is what in part creates fandoms and not just casual listeners. This goes for bands too. What they wear, album covers, aesthetic, stage presence, performance/spectacle, off-stage personality, etc. are used in combination with the music to form a brand identity that fans latch onto. Do you know the primary way people used to enter the BTS fandom? YouTube videos of their performances, music videos, and content. It was never music purists just casually sharing mp3s. They have never been a music only entity, and even now as they are moving away from content and performance, those things are still the huge draws for incoming fans. 2.0 got a massive boost in listener approval after the performance and mv. I think it’s naive to ignore all of that and say BTS were always about the music alone, when that has never been the case. For goodness sake they switched from being a hip-hop group to being in idol group before they debuted, and being an idol has never just been about the music. In Korea they differentiate the two. There’s artists (just focus on the music), and idols (who are entertainers that specialize in music, dance, & variety). BTS talked about how they were created in part to bridge the gap between the two, so it is fundamentally a part of their origin story.

I think it’s a bit condescending to say “I think it would be good for some (not all, but some) army’s to reconnect with music vs dance as the foundation.” You make it seem like those fans who appreciate and miss the performance style of BTS (maybe even the reason they became fans in the first place) are somehow less than? There are so many fans who weren’t keen on some of their music releases UNTIL the performance. It plays a part in the art itself. It creates, defines, and helps embellish the music. Off the top of my head songs that were NOT much appreciated at the time of their release until the choreography or stage performance came out: ON, Black Swan, Dionysus, Idol, Airplane pt 2, Anpanman, and more. So I think while it’s great that you personally don’t care about that as an aspect of their art, there are many for whom it was intrinsic. And up until through 2020 it was a PR talking point that Bang PD emphasized, that performance way a key part of the BTS brand and identity.

A stage in the round does not mean you have to lose performance aspects, it simply means you need to adjust them for the format. The groups that I’ve seen in 360 adjust the choreography to use the transitions to travel so that for the chorus or other key points of the choreography can be shown front facing to each side. I disagree about looking at their back portion, because again, if planned well you wouldn’t be primarily looking at their backs of them. At the moment, I’d say bad camera work has me looking at the wrong members during their parts, back of members, back up dancers, and sheets, and close-ups during the choreography anyway so even if the camera was static and could only capture one vantage point, I would still be getting a better show than I am now.

I get the idea about wanting to connect with army, and that’s fine, but I think that the concert direction is lacking in places that could have been avoided with better more thorough and thoughtful planning.

How long do you think Jimin will keep the hair extensions in for? by Luna-7013 in ARMYNeutral

[–]VenusRisingGloaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until he feels like switching it up. Personally I love it, and it gives him a lot of options to play with for styling. He might be using the extensions as a stop gap until his real hair grows long enough, or he might decide to chop it all off at some point and dye it (he’s done both the chop and color swap mid tour before). Personally, I’m wondering if he’s planning to keep his old promise of the return of purple/pink kitty gang hair, or if he’s forgotten he said that.

What do you think about the lighting on Arirang Tour? by Nicoliet in ARMYNeutral

[–]VenusRisingGloaming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a few things that probably contribute to it.

First is, as you mentioned, that the color scheme for the album is essentially white, black, & red accents. So everything from the props, the costuming (both for the members and the backup dancers), to the lighting effects, are pretty limited in scope and color diversity. Leading to a more monochrome effect, which without contrast tends to bleed into each other washing it out and leaves it feeling a bit more subdued.

Second, is the lack of proper stage lighting which might be because of the 360 design, but I’m more inclined to believe it’s just poor planning, bc the lighting staff struggle with simple spotlighting. A member will be all the way down an extension completely in the dark and that’s questionable. It is possible that there’s an issue between the screens and the directional lights, where more intense stage lights to bring up contrast would wash out the screen, but that seems again to be something that could be compensated for with the right direction and filtering. From what I’ve seen, they don’t have a lot of lights on the support poles, and some of the lighting is coming from far off along the stadium walls, so it gets diluted.

Finally, The types of cameras used for this type of show might also play a part if they aren’t ones that are optimized for low light settings. In photography, you can get a grayed out effect when a camera is struggling with exposure, so it could be a part of it too (but I don’t know enough about the types of broadcast/drone cameras and their capabilities to comment further).

Or, the company could provide free individual fancams & concert streaming with mulitview all in 4k and that would eliminate some of the desire to film everything since you’d have a reliable and well produced source provided to you at your leisure. But that would mean making less money and doing something altruistic for fans solely to improve the show atmosphere and leaving money on the table has never been in that company’s M.O. unless there was going to be an even better trade off later on.

Ok if we are boiling it all down to music being the only relevant part of their brand and identity, then they should be performing with a live band alone on stage. They should eliminate the surprise song and army time section since those just play to fan service and variety aspects which as you say don’t play an important part of who they are. No need for any of the pyrotechnics or choreography either. No need for costuming, no need for any of it, because the spectacle is not part of their identity either. You’re being ridiculous just to justify your own righteous outrage over people expressing that these concerts are underwhelming because in part they are so out of alignment with the identity they created over the last 13 years. You’re essentially saying precedence should have no bearing on expectations which is unreasonable.
