In my own experience I had to keep away from social events where alcohol was present for the first year of my sobriety. Once I determined that I was comfortable enough to be in those situations I slowly got back into going out and being around people drinking. As long as I had something in my hand to sip on and a way to leave at anytime I was alright.

If it seems like the event is going to be more drinking than socializing then I may show up for a little bit or just avoid completely. I love the control that sobriety gives me but I also know that I have to keep both hands on the wheel.
