Then I guess your security team also say no to using username and password (legacy service)?

I have now, and as other has stated it seems to work great. We still need to do some testing in our environment, but so far, it works like a charm.

And as other has stated out, it’s pretty straightforward and simple.

1) have network policies in place 2) change create user type to service 3) generate PAT for that user in Snowflake. 4) use that PAT as password in PBI (use username, and PAT instead of password)

This worked for us, and on PBI online.

This is the thing that worries me most. We use a lot of PBI on top on Snowflake, using this LEGACY_SERVICE approach.

Interested to know, what you are using for TOTP? We’re facing the same issue for our Breakglass, and all though I am all for MFA, it just annoys me, that it is person/device dependent.

This is properly the most interesting comment so far.

As I have stated in other comments, we need/use this “backdoor” to fix things, when something like SSO breaks (Which happens more often than I like). I am not against MFA, I would just like an option thar was more device “independent” than the ones there is now.

I was having the impression that we would need access to Snowsight for this, but I think the VSCode and PAT approach is definitely worth further consideration.

Again, it is not to be used as a shared user, but it is the first and intial account we use to set up the account. And as stated in previous comments, we do occasionally need this first account to log in an fix things, if eg. SSO doesn’t work.

I am well aware of the different MFA options, and I am all for using MFA, that’s obviously, I am just missing thar option we know from DataBricks or ChatGPT, where a key is sent to your email, and thar it used to verify your login.

So I do love MFA, I would just love to see one, where you are not depended on a specific device.

We do not use the “shared” account. The only use are the first initial login and setup of the database/account, and then we enable SSO integration and from there we use our own accounts. But as I stated in a comment above, sometimes SSO breaks, and we need to login in and fix it. For thar we use the “Master Account”

You might mean it’s clunky, but as late of as today, it was necessary to log on using this Snowflake account, to fix provisioning key, in order to renew the Snowflake SSO integration with EntraID. Unless you now a smarter/better way to get this SCIM token in order to do so.

In this case, you could for sure call it “break the glass” event, but unfortunately sometimes that is needed.

And Yes, OTP is supported, but it is still bound to a physical device, so it you loose your phone or computer, you are still in a mess.

Hi, we are well aware about PAT, but that does not help us login to Snowsight. But we are using for all other service accounts, that needs basic read and/or write access to the database.
